21/07/2006 - Myspacers Beware, Learn How to Patch Your System - Whilst the populous of Neowin have probably mastered the art of Windows Update it seems like the hordes of myspace users haven't. This week machines that haven't been patched for a WMF (Windows Meta File) have been caught out by an advert that installs spyware onto the users PC.
Those using internet browsers such as Firefox and Opera are safe, but those using IE should really patch up. Microsoft released the patch in January, but a banner advert on myspace is all it takes for those unpatched machines to become infected. US computer security firm iDefense discovered the dangerous banner advert that has been seen on many MySpace pages. The code hidden in the advert exploits the WMF bug which preys on a weakness in the way Windows handles images.
Digital detective work by iDefense uncovered computer servers which logged how many times the adware was installed. Before the servers were shut down they had racked up more than one million installs. This shocking figure gives us an understanding of how many users out there forget to update their computers.
Mr Nigam, Myspace's Chief Security Officer urged MySpace users to follow basic security practices to avoid falling victim to any scam. He said people should update their copy of Windows, install patches for browsers and keep anti-virus and anti-spyware software up to date. Sounds pretty simple doesn't it? Wonder who is listening.

21/07/2006 - Jessica Simpson Leading the way in the Future of Music - Well, sort of. Yahoo announced today that they would be the first to offer a track to buy that has no DRM attached to it. Digital Rights Management is currently integrated within the majority of legally purchased songs on the internet, and is generally frowned upon by the general public. This download though, will be in mp3 format, allowing it to be played on any mp3 player or even ripped to a CD.
Major record labels have argued that DRM is needed to protect music from being distributed illegally, and blames file sharing for the decline in CD sales for the past few years (and not the lack of investment into new talent). Speaking on his blog Ian Rogers from Yahoo! wrote "Our position is simple: DRM doesn't add any value for the artist, label (who are selling DRM-free music every day - the Compact Disc), or consumer, the only people it adds value to are the technology companies who are interested in locking consumers to a particular technology platform."
While companies like Wippit and eMusic offer DRM free music, it is often from small indie labels, this is the first time that a song has been offered by a major label. Even more exciting (ok, maybe not with Ms Simpson) is the fact that the song can be personalised to have your name said at the beginning of the song.
Could this be the beginning of a new musical revolution? Probably not, the music industry is too busy suing grannies, or penning a new contract for an overpaid hip-hop star to realise that this is what consumers want, but maybe, just maybe, there is hope.

21/07/2006 - The next big thing: an iPod with Wi-Fi and phone? - COMPUTER industry insiders believe that Apple is preparing for a Christmas sales battle with the ultimate handheld device: an iPod that lets you download on the move and doubles as a phone. The next upgrade of the iPod, of which 50 million have been sold, is expected to be capable of transfering audio and video MP3 files to the music player without wires. The use of wi-fi chips in the players would bypass the need for a computer, allowing users to download music directly from their wireless internet connection.
There are thousands of wireless "hotspots" across Britain which could be used to transfer files. Some analysts are also predicting that the Californian computer company is preparing a "wireless" iPod that could also incorporate a phone, the ultimate converged device. Speculation about the product comes as rumours intensify that Microsoft will be unveiling its own device with a wi-fi chip, dubbed the "iPod killer".

21/07/2006 - Skype introduces Wi-Fi phones - Open wireless Internet hotspots will soon serve as virtual phone booths, as four manufacturers plan to introduce Wi-Fi handsets for Skype's popular VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) telephony service this quarter. The phones can be used at open Wi-Fi access points that do not require browser authentication, and come preloaded with Skype software, Skype said Thursday. The move is designed to give Skype users the mobility of a cell phone, but retain the ability to use the eBay-owned telephony company's free or inexpensive calling rates, Skype said. There is no difference in fees for calls made from Wi-Fi phones than for those made from PCs.
Belkin, Accton Technology's Edge-Core, Netgear, and Standard Microsystems are all introducing the handsets to support the new service. The phones will hit the market in the third quarter, Skype said, and will be sold directly from the Skype online store. Edge-Core's phone, which features and a color LCD (liquid crystal display) screen, carries a suggested retail price of €199 (趛), excluding value-added tax (VAT). Netgear's phone is displayed on the Skype store, listed as "coming soon" and priced at £140 (趢), inclusive of VAT.

21/07/2006 - Low-cost "unofficial" Core Duo CPUs with 533MHz FSB - Dell is now offering Napa-based notebooks based on Intel's Core Duo T2250 and T2050 processors, which are not listed with the other T-series (Yonah) Core Duo mobile CPUs on Intel's pricing or product website pages. Dell is following Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer, Lenovo and Asustek Computer, which already offer Napa models featuring these CPUs. These "unofficial" CPUs use a 533MHz front-side bus (FSB), while the remainder of the T-series operate on a 667MHz FSB.
Dell has announced the Inspiron E1405 series, with the Intel Core Duo T2050 CPU (2M L2 cache, 1.60GHz, 533MHz FSB), a 14.1-inch widescreen display, 512MB of DDR2 SDRAM and 60GB of HDD memory. The new Napa model is priced at US轺, cheaper than USũ,100-1,300 for other dual-core Yonah models based on the T2300 Core Duo processor.
