20/07/2006 - Combating the TiVo Effect: Does the Web Have the Answers? - As personal technology goes, Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) are more than just a replacement for tape-based VCRs: They're a boon to TV watchers and the enemy of the traditional 30-second television advertising spot, for decades the single most powerful and lucrative form of brand advertising.

Devices such as TiVo have long been seen as a disruptive force in the TV advertising space, offering consumers the chance to blast past advertising with a simple click of a button.

The devices are unlikely to represent any kind of death knell for TV spots -- they continue to be a powerful way to deliver a message -- but advertisers seeking to combat the so-called TiVo effect are increasingly borrowing techniques from Web advertising.

From mini-shows to zany commercials that create their own audiences and their own buzz to interactive commercials that invite users to offer feedback, the techniques being used to counter DVR technology often got their start online.

The TiVo effect is just one symptom of a larger trend toward a more fractured media landscape, one where users' attention will be pulled in a thousand directions at once, John Houghton, president of Mobilecast Media told the E-Commerce Times.

Advertisers are also trying to find ways to work within the context of DVRs. TiVo itself sees an opportunity to provide advertisers with new ways to reach audiences and they are often pitched in the same way that online advertising is positioned.

"Traditionally, the viewer of TV commercials had no choice but to watch or get up and leave the room or change channels," said Bruce Kasanoff, president of interactive marketing firm Now Possible. "Online, users can choose not to click ads, but often they do and smart advertisers will look at why that is and steal the things that work."

As video advertising on the Web has proliferated, the best marketers have found what works and what doesn't, Kasanoff added. Traditional 30-second spots that drive home a strong message fall short, while short film-like clips that entertain get strong traction and often draw their own audiences, he explained.

"Good online ads interact with users and let users interact back with them," Kasanoff noted.

Fifty percent of U.S. homes will have DVRs by 2010, according to Forrester Research analyst Josh Bernoff. He added that the devices will soon enter a "hypergrowth" stage and begin to spread to second and third television sets in many homes, dramatically expanding the impact of the commercial-skipping technology.

20/07/2006 - Nike+iPod Time Magazine's Gadget of the Week - Time Magazine has declared the Nike+iPod kit its Gadget of the Week, with positive praise too from the Wall Street Journal. Time's Wilson Rothman said: "For a field already glutted with gadgets, the Nike + iPod kit is the most elegant of high-tech runner's aids."

He describes the functions of the device, including the reassuring female voice which tells a runner when to begin the race, and advises users to calibrate their running speed in order to determine the most accurate results. Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal joins the cacophony of iPod + sport praise. He's also positive about the product, and a little enamoured of that female voice.

"After a few runs or walks, instead of feeling like we were chugging along alone, we were suddenly running with a built-in coach who voiced encouragement every so often - or whenever we pressed the centre button for an update of our progress. For us, this was a real benefit," he writes.

"We hope this product can improve in the future to do other things like distinguishing walks from runs, automatically triggering your PowerSong when you slow down or incorporating heart-rate monitoring. But the Nike + iPod Sport Kit is a great first effort. It's easy to understand, and its audible encouragement is helpful," the Wall Street Journal concludes.

20/07/2006 - Apple Financial Officer Hints at Apple Phone - Apple's iPod, iTunes and other music products continue to expand its business - and the company hinted at exciting news ahead for the category.

While no new product announcements were disclosed during last night's financial results announcement, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: "The iPod continued to earn a US market share of over 75 per cent and we are extremely excited about future iPod products in our pipeline."

Apple chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer said: "Apple is investing heavily in iPod and iTunes engineering and is very enthusiastic about products in the pipeline."

Oppenheimer also dropped Apple's biggest suggestion yet that it has plans to deliver a hybrid mobile phone iPod, saying: "We don't think that the phones that are available today make the best music players. We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change, and we are not sitting around doing nothing."

iPod sales climb 36 per cent

The company released statistics that showed iPod sales contributed $1.4 billion in revenue to the company's $4.37 billion revenue overall. That's a climb of 36 per cent when compared to the same quarter last year.

Apple's 'Other Music Products' category - a general gathering that includes iTunes sales, iPod accessories and other services (presumably including revenue under its 'Made for iPod' scheme) popped another $457 million into the company coffers. This statistic is one of the most impressive on the company's books, as it represents a 90 per cent rise, year on year.

Citing research data from NPD, GFK and BCN, Apple confirmed that the iPod accounts for 75 per cent of the US MP3 player market, and that it's the top-selling music player in the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Spain, Italy and Japan. iTunes - which now offers a US catalogue of 3 million songs, 9,000 music videos and 150 TV shows - grabbed an impressive slice of 85 per cent of the pay-to-own digital music market, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

20/07/2006 - Symantec Report: Vista Code Contains Security Loopholes - A new report from Symantec security researchers contends that Microsoft's much-awaited Vista operating system could harbor a range of vulnerabilities that will make it less secure than previous iterations of Windows.

According to research published July 18 by Symantec, in Cupertino, Calif., a number of Vista's software components, specifically a handful of protocols related to its redesigned networking technologies, could become security loopholes if Microsoft does not fix the problems or ensure that the product is configured appropriately to hide the glitches when it is shipped. The Redmond, Wash., software giant is slated to deliver a final version of Vista in January 2007.

20/07/2006 - Eighty percent of new malware defeats antivirus - The most popular antivirus applications on the market are rendered useless by around 80 percent of new malware, according to AusCERT.

At a security breakfast hosted by e-mail security firm Messagelabs in Sydney on Wednesday, the general manager of the Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT), Graham Ingram, told the audience that popular desktop antivirus applications "don't work".

"At the point we see it as a CERT, which is very early on -- the most popular brands of antivirus on the market Â… have an 80 percent miss rate. That is not a detection rate that is a miss rate.

"So if you are running these pieces of software, eight out of 10 pieces of malicious code are going to get in," said Ingram.

Ingram, who refused to name any specific companies, was quick to point that this was due to cybercriminals designing their Trojans and viruses to bypass detection rather than a defective product.

20/07/2006 - US needs to step up fight against online child abuse - The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has claimed that 50% of all online child abuse pictures can be traced back to the US in a recent report.

The IWF is keen to stress that the reason the country has such an alarming proportion of material is because the US has more ISPs than any other country, handling more web-traffic than any other country. The report found almost 5,000 sites containing indecent images of children, with 2,500 of them hosted in the US.

Next in line was Russia with 14.9%, Japan with 11.7% and Spain with 8.8%. Thailand (3.6%), South Korea (2.16%) and the UK (0.2%) trailed in last, whilst 7.5% fell into the "Other" category.

The US has already made attempts this year to tackle the problem, in April there were proposed new laws and in June a coalition of five large organisations (Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo, Earthlink United Online and The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) met to outline their own ways in which to deal with the problem.

Despite the growing problem of online child abuse, it is important that the relevant authorities deal with the problem in a way that has little to no effect on the rest of the legal internet. Limiting users rights is not be the answer, but a greater offensive against known sites (some of which left online 5 years after being reported - IWF) would benefit the whole of the internet.

20/07/2006 - Fierce competition from AMD causes Intel profit loss of 57% - Intel has had a very bad year. Intel's profit of 33 cents per share dropped to a profit of 15 cents per share this year, a drop of 57%. We, in the Community of Neowin, know that this has to do with the competitive failure of the NetBurst architecture vs AMD's Athlon64. In order to maintain their marketshare, Intel has dropped prices which has had a negative result on profitability.

Intel's long term future is, however, not so gloomy. Realizing that their Pentium 4 Netburst architecture was not their salvation, Intel decided to take a step back and work with a design that had more to do with the Pentium III. The Intel Core (aka Yonah) processor was based on the Pentium M design. While it was a bit of step backwards, as they both lack 64bit support, it was enough to convince Apple to choose Intel over AMD when they made their switch to x86 processors. Intel's future gets rosier when you consider their Intel Core 2 design which will combine the advantages of the Yonah core with EMT64T support. The Intel Core 2 desktop processor (aka Conroe) are scheduled to begin shipping in one week's time.

Intel was the worst performer on the Dow Jones Industrial Average for 2006 having lost 26% of its value. To respond with the loss in performance, Intel has layed off 1000 managers or about 1% of their workforce.

We expect that a more competitive product will change that situation drastically but, as consumers, we worry about paying higher prices to make up last year's lost profits.
