19/07/2006 - Security Experts Warn of Increased SQL Injection Attacks - Managed IT security services provider SecureWorks announced Tuesday that they have seen a significant rise in the number of attempted SQL injection hacks aimed at some of its financial and utility company clients over the last three months. "From January through March, we blocked anywhere from 100 to 200 SQL Injection attacks per day," said SecureWorks CTO Jon Ramsey. "As of April, we have seen that number jump from 1,000 to 4,000 to 8,000 per day," said Ramsey.
"The majority of the attacks are coming from overseas," said Ramsey. "And although we certainly see a higher volume with other types of attacks, what makes the SQL Injection exploits so worrisome is that they are often indicative of a targeted attack." This is a type of attack where the hacker has targeted a particular organization, versus a worm which spreads indiscriminately.
"The CardSystems security breach, where hackers stole 263,000 customer credit card numbers and exposed 40 million more, is a prime example of a SQL Injection attack," said Ramsey. A more recent example of a SQL Injection attack occurred last December when Russian hackers broke into a Rhode Island government Web site and stole credit card information from individuals who had done business online with state agencies. The Russian hackers claimed to have stolen 53,000 credit card numbers during this attack.

19/07/2006 - YouTube sued over copyright infringement - A journalist and well-known helicopter pilot in Los Angeles has filed suit against video-sharing site YouTube, claiming that it encouraged users to violate copyright law. Robert Tur says video he shot of the beating of trucker Reginald Denny during the 1992 Los Angeles riots was posted at YouTube without his permission and viewed more than 1,000 times. Tur says in his lawsuit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court, that YouTube is profiting from his work while hurting his ability to license his video.
"Mr. Tur's lawsuit is without merit," YouTube said in a statement. "YouTube is a service provider that complies with all the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and therefore is entitled to the full protections of the safe harbor provisions of the Act."

19/07/2006 - Macbook Verses Dell Notebook Heat Test - MacBooks run at a slightly higher average temperature than an similarly specified Dell Latitude D620, a set of independent tests claim. Both machines seemed to run warmer at the bottom of their chassis, observes Brian Krische in a report on his website.
Krische tested the machines by measuring their running temperature when they were playing back an entire DVD using the battery. He chose this test because he felt it reflects a typical consumer use of the machines. He measured temperatures at eight points on the top and bottom of the cases using an Oakton InfraPro infrared thermometer. The room temperature was 75-degrees Fahrenheit, he said.
During the test, parts of the MacBook (the upper left hand quadrant) ran as high as 119.8-degrees Fahrenheit, at the end of the DVD. The Dell PC reached 105.8-degrees, he claimed. The test was only run once, but led Krische to conclude: "In the end, it appears to be that, in certain spots, the MacBook is significantly hotter than the Dell, but its average temperature is very close to that of the Dell."
He stresses that he tested both machines "with utmost scrutiny", and points out that Apple's slim consumer notebook has no cooling fans, unlike the Dell.
"I think that the MacBook is a great alternative to the Windows-dominated computer market," he states.

19/07/2006 - Merom to top 50% of Intel notebook processors in 1Q 2007 - Intel plans to raise the proportion of Merom to over 50% of its notebook processor shipments in the first quarter of 2007, making 64-bit dual-core models the mainstream in the notebook market, according to industry sources. Intel's latest plan will reduce production of its Yonah processors in the fourth quarter, and by the end of the 2006, Yonah processors will only account for 30% of Intel's notebook processor shipments, down from the current 50%, the sources revealed. By the end of the first half of 2007, Yonah processors will total less than 10%, the sources added.
While Intel is expected to officially unveil its Merom processors by the end of July, volume production may only begin in mid-August, and the first Intel-based 64-bit dual-core notebooks may not hit shelves until the end of August, the sources pointed out. Intel's initial shipment goal for Merom after its launch is 15% of its notebook processor shipments, and the proportion will increase to 30% in the fourth quarter, the sources said.

19/07/2006 - Vulnerability Found In D-Link Routers - A buffer overflow vulnerability discovered several D-Link wired and wireless routers could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code and potentially compromise entire networks. eEye Digital Security, an Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based security firm, issued an advisory on the vulnerability Monday. The company had notified D-Link about the flaw in February.
The vulnerability affects the Local Area Network (LAN) interface of several of D-Link's consumer-grade routers, and a company spokesperson said the Fountain Valley, Calif.-based networking vendor has released patches for download on its Web site. Mike Puterbaugh, vice president of marketing at eEye, said the vulnerability is serious given the widespread use of D-Link routers in small-business and home networks. "The footprint of D-Link's install base is significant, and this could have potentially turned into a big issue," he said.

19/07/2006 - Nvidia to Supply Next Generation iPod Graphics Chip - Nvidia has beat out Broadcom to supply the multimedia chip inside the next-generation video iPod, according to a Wall Street analyst. "Based on our analysis, we believe Nvidia is designed into the next-generation vPod socket at the expense of Broadcom," said American Technology Research analyst Satya Chillara.
"We believe the Nvidia chip adds 3D graphics functionality in addition to all of the existing features (such as H.264) that Broadcom supported with the existing vPod." Apple's current fifth-generation (video) iPod uses an audio chip from PortalPlayer and a multimedia chip from Broadcom.
Apple's "true" video iPod is rumored to be delayed until the first half of 2007.

Anyone who purchased a Western Digital hard drive between March 22, 2001 and February 15, 2006 was eligible to receive a copy of EMC Dantz Retrospect Express Software.
Western Digital has now sent out via email a link to a website where people who claimed can download the Software. They will be able to perform a single download of the Software prior to October 18, 2006, after which time the Software download will no longer be available per the terms of the Settlement. Only one Software download is available per person.
