18/07/2006 - Microsoft acquires Winternals Software - On Tuesday, Microsoft announced it has acquired Winternals Software, a small maker of Windows utility programs, in a deal that the software maker hopes will add key technical talent to its operating system development team.
Terms of the deal to acquire the Austin, Texas-based company were not announced. Among the software that Winternals offers is a set of freely downloadable tools known as Sysinternals.
In buying Winternals, Microsoft is getting the company's free tools, its Sysinternals community Web site as well as several paid-for software products for businesses. However, it appears Microsoft made the deal, in large part, to hire the company's two co-founders.
"It's definitely about talent," Platform and Services division architect Jason Garms said in a telephone interview on Tuesday. "Mark is one of the top five or 10 people in the world when it comes to Windows internals."

18/07/2006 - Microsoft to Alter Its Reporting Structure - Software giant Microsoft says it will change the way it reports its results, although its underlying financial reporting regime will not change. The Redwood, Wash.-based firm said it would now break its results into five categories rather than the seven it had previously used. It will do this by combining its entertainment and mobile device units, and will merge the unit that includes Office with its Microsoft Business Solutions unit. However, the firm said it would keep its seven business units for the purposes of financial reporting. Microsoft is also re-allocating the financial results of its Exchange business, moving them from the Server and Tools unit to the Microsoft Business division, which covers Office, Microsoft Business Solutions and other corporate software. Its MSN unit will move to the Online Services Group, which will now include MSN and Windows Live.

18/07/2006 - Thermaltake Toughpower 750w review - While basic office type computers can get away with crummy generic 350w power supplies, more powerful gaming systems certainly cannot. Doing so would result in serious system instability issues that can even place components such as the motherboard at great risk. High performance power supplies maintain a constant flow of power, and at the same time continue to deliver enough energy reliably.
Thermaltake offers a huge range of quality power supplies, designed for a wide range of different purposes. Today we will be reviewing a product coming from the Toughpower range, designed for maximum performance, and outputting an impressive 750W. Thermaltake claims that the working efficiency of the Toughpower 750w can reach up to 85%, thanks to a new design that makes use of top grade components. Also the Toughpower 750w features a very quiet operating volume thanks to the use of a single 140mm fan.

18/07/2006 - PowerPoint Flaw To Be Fixed August 8th - Microsoft issued an advisory Monday, warning customers of a security vulnerability in PowerPoint that was disclosed last week. The Redmond company plans to make a fix available as part of its monthly security updates on August 8, but may release a patch sooner if warranted.
"In order for this attack to be carried out, a user must first open a malicious PowerPoint document attached to an e-mail or otherwise provided to them by an attacker," Microsoft said, adding that it "is concerned that new reports of a vulnerability in PowerPoint were not disclosed responsibly, potentially putting computer users at risk. We continue to encourage responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities."

18/07/2006 - First Screenshots of Build 5472 & Drastic Speed Improvements - A new build of Vista appeared on connect late yesterday, and first reports of it are promising.
Ryan Hoffman of Bink.nu had this to say: "I've gotten Windows Vista Build 5472 loaded up on my Tablet PC, and so far so good! It feels fast. I mean, really fast. The new blue basic theme is in. The new Aero cursor theme is enabled by default. Did I mention, this build is really fast?"
At the moment I haven't got it downloaded, I'll report back on my findings later today after I get it all installed and what-not. In the meantime heres a gallery of screenshots uploaded by Ryan. It features the new Aero Basic Theme, which looks quite tight compared to the scrap metal feel which is now gone. Did I mention Scrap metal feel is gone!?
