17/07/2006 - Dell, Acer tout 802.11n wireless laptops - Dell and Acer both announced today notebook-oriented add-in cards equipped with a pre-standard version of the 802.11n next-generation Wi-Fi specification. The company's cards provide data transfer rates of up to 270Mbps and 300Mbps, the two firms claimed respectively.
Dell's Wireless 1500 is available now for all XPS and Inspiron notebooks, the PC giant said. The optional extra costs ๋. It's based on Draft 1.0 of 802.11n, which has yet to be finalised and formally ratified as a standard. To get the maximum throughput, you need ideal conditions and a compatible base-station - which means one based on Broadcom's Intensi-Fi chipset. With the Wi-Fi Alliance refusing to conduct interoperability tests until 802.11n becomes a true standard, vendor-specific branding is the only way to guarantee compatitibility.

17/07/2006 - Malware Now a Group Effort - Hackers are taking a page from the open-source playbook, using the same techniques that made Linux and Apache successes to improve their malicious software, according to McAfee.
Nowhere is this more apparent than within the growing families of "bot" software, which allow hackers to remotely control infected computers. Unlike viruses of the past, bots tend to be written by a group of authors, who often collaborate by using the same tools and techniques as open source developers, said Dave Marcus, security research and communications manager with McAfee's Avert Labs. "Over the last year and a half, we've noticed how bot development in particular has latched on to open-source tools and the open-source development model," he said.

17/07/2006 - Microsoft: Gunning to Launch Vista and Office 2007 Together - In spite of the vague public wording around its Windows Vista and Office 2007 release plans, Microsoft is continuing to tell its hardware and software partners that its goal is to release the two products simultaneously in January. In March, Microsoft announced publicly that it would not meet internal deadlines that would allow it to launch Vista and Office 2007 before the end of 2006, as the company had been planning. Then, in late June, Microsoft officials acknowledged that the company's internal Office 2007 release dates had slipped and instead of delivering the product to businesses in October, it would commit to doing so by the end of calendar 2006.
At the time Microsoft announced the new Office delay, it also changed its public tune on when it planned its Office 2007 retail launch. Instead of promising a January 2007 launch date, Microsoft officials said they would commit to an "early 2007" launch for Office 2007. That change in wording led many to speculate that Office 2007 would launch some time after Vista.

17/07/2006 - Chip Price War On The Verge - It's starting to feel like old times again for Intel. With the impending release of the Core 2 Duo processor, formerly code-named Conroe, on the heels of the successful Xeon launch, the chip maker's products are generating a new kind of buzz. It's the same kind of anticipation that was a given several years ago, before rival Advanced Micro Devices hit the scene with technology impressive enough to turn heads of corporate buyers and enthusiasts.
"It's been a long time since people have been talking about Intel the way they have been talking about them for the past few months," said one system builder, who requested anonymity. "For so many years, Intel had been king of the mountain and nobody wanted to talk about AMD, but for the past three years that has flipped." For example, Todd Swank, director of marketing at Nor-tech, a system builder in Burnsville, Minn., said Nor-Tech is particularly enthusiastic about Intel's Core 2 duo's price/performance story.

17/07/2006 - AMD fires another antitrust salvo at Intel - Advanced Micro Devices is stepping up the pressure on Intel over alleged anticompetitive practices by filing another complaint, this time with German authorities.
The latest complaint was filed last week with Germany's Federal Cartel Office, or Bundeskartellamt. In it, AMD claims that Intel made deals with German retailers that violate the country's competition laws.
The complaint was prompted by a report in the German edition of the Financial Times claiming that the Media Markt retail electronics chain had agreed to only sell computers that used Intel's processors in return for a payment from the chipmaker.
"AMD had already received similar information, so we decided to file a formal complaint with the Federal Cartel Office," AMD spokeswoman Hollis Krym explained. A representative for the German Federal Cartel Office confirmed that a complaint had been received from "a competitor of Intel." It is now liaising with the European Commission, which is conducting its own investigation into Intel. "We're checking with colleagues in Brussels to see whether they will take this complaint on as well," the Federal Cartel Office representative explained.
In June 2005, AMD filed a lawsuit against Intel, claiming that it had forced major customers to accept exclusive deals, and had withheld rebates and marketing subsidies from customers who bought more AMD processors than Intel had allowed.
The next month, European Commission officials raided Intel's offices in Swindon, England, as well as the offices of several PC retailers, including Dell.

17/07/2006 - Will New Mac Pro Sport Blu-Ray Drive - Apple's new Pro Macs, predicted to launch at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference next month, may feature a Blu-ray DVD drive. Apple Insider is claiming to have learned that the Mac Pro case will include a second optical disc drive slot.
Could this new optical drive burn Blu-ray DVDs? Apple Insider suggests that it will ship empty, and that Mac users will be given the opportunity to fill it with a Blu-ray or HD DVD burner should they wish. Apple is a member of the Blu-ray Disc Association board of directors.
According to the report, it is unlikely that there will be a radical redesign to the casing for the high-end Mac. Apple Insider claims that no change to the design was required because the current Power Mac casing is suited to the size of the logic board that accompanies the new Intel-based processor.
