The dual-core AMD Sempron chips, which are likely to be called Sempron X2, are expected to be produced using 65nm process technology, thus, will not consume a lot of power. Cache sizes and clock-speeds are unclear, however, the chips are to be compatible with socket AM2 and will feature dual-channel PC2-6400 (DDR2 800MHz) memory controller.

11/07/2006 - Prices for pre-N devices get slashed by over 20% - Leading vendors of consumer networking devices in the US have recently lowered their prices for related pre-N (draft 802.11n) products, with the prices for a majority of items slashed over 20%, according to market sources. The latest reduction has helped narrow the price gap between pre-N and MIMO (multi-in multi-out) devices and also brings down the price difference between pre-N and IEEE 802.11g devices from over two fold previously to about one fold presently, the sources noted.

However, a further reduction in prices for pre-N products is expected to come in late third quarter when related chipmakers are expected to roll out low-cost versions of integrated pre-N chips, the sources indicated.

11/07/2006 - Ballmer: Future Windows to arrive faster - Microsoft Corp.'s customers will never again face as long a wait between new versions of Windows software as they're enduring now, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer vowed Tuesday. Meanwhile, Chairman Bill Gates said the company's much-delayed Vista operating system is likely -- but not guaranteed -- to reach the market by January.

The comments in separate speeches by Microsoft's two top executives came nearly two weeks after the Redmond, Wash.-based company announced a postponement for its Office business software suite, and nearly four months after a similar postponement for Vista.

Product launch delays are not unusual in the software industry, but the wait has been especially long for Vista, which will incorporate features to make Windows more robust as more work is done online with greater need for security. Vista's predecessor, Windows XP, came out in October 2001, when Microsoft didn't face the challenges it now confronts from the likes of Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc.

11/07/2006 - Guide: How to turn a paper clip into a house - It sounds crazy, but one Canadian net-junky has managed to swap his way to owning his own house, starting out with a simple red paper clip.

Kyle MacDonald, 26, took a year to swap 16 items to meet his goal of gaining a house without spending a penny. Whats more, the internet celebrity hasn't ruled out swapping the house yet!

The chain of events began when Kyle swapped the paper clip for a pen in the shape of a fish, then a novelty doorknob, a camping stove and then a generator. He swapped his way through a keg of beer with a neon sign - an "instant party"- following that a snowmobile, a holiday to British Columbia, a van and rather amazingly a record contract.

Bizarrely enough Kyle swapped his next deal - a year's rent-free living in a house in Arizona - for an afternoon with Mr Poison himself, Alice Cooper. This was then even more bizarrely exchanged for a limited edition Kiss snow globe.

Suddenly celebrities joined the swapping and Kyle managed to exchange the ornament with TV actor Corbin Bernsen who gave him a paid role in his new movie. Swap 16 finally came when the town of Kipling in Saskatchewan decided they'd give a member of their community the role and gave Kyle his house, in the sleepy town with a population of only 1,140.

Still with me? Good.

The 26-year-old unemployed success story has been inundated with TV crews, interviews and media attention since finishing what he started. One of the internet's more unique "get stuff quick" schemes, Kyle MacDonald will undoubtedly go down in online history as he prepares to move into his new house in a town he's never even visited.

Coming soon: endless Kyle MacDonald copy-cat schemes!

11/07/2006 - Microsoft's Private Folder App Criticized - Microsoft has released an application that would make it possible for those who share a PC or account to store files in a separate folder that only they may access. The move has been criticized, however, as some say the program could be misused, hiding content from IT administrators.

The software is called Private Folder 1.0, and hides data from the hard drive in addition to protecting it with a password. While no support will be given for the product, it will be available to those who verify their software as genuine through Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage Program.

But response to Private Folder from some was not positive. "An alleged security app that's easily circumvented and completely unsupported, with absolutely no documentation? Oh, dear. With all due respect, who the heck came up with this and why?" a user named "Drew" posted to the MSBlog on Monday.

11/07/2006 - Microsoft shuts down Windows 98 - From 11 July, Microsoft will no longer help users over the phone with any problems they have with the ageing operating system.

The firm will also stop providing security updates for Windows 98 from the same date.

Support for the software was originally due to end in 2003, but was extended following customer protests.

Products affected by closing down the support system include Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (Millennium Edition). Analyst firm IDC believes that more than 70 million users will be hit by the change.

The majority of these people are likely to be using the operating system at home, as by now most large businesses have phased out machines running the software. Many small firms are also believed to be users of the product.

11/07/2006 - BBC leads online World Cup presence - The 2006 World Cup has come and gone, and the BBC has emerged victorious in the website-war that has raged on for the past month.

The BBC received over 3.4 million visitors during the competition which came to a close on Sunday, with Italy reigning victorious over France only via a penalty shoot-out. Not only was the BBC Sport website the hub for statistics, information and highlights but the world's largest public-service broadcaster also streamed matches live, online, for the first time ever.

The BBC's coverage was so successful it proved to be three-times more popular than the official website, FIFA.com.

The first World Cup of the true broadband era, Germany 2006 had a heavy web presence with blogs, live match streams and gambling websites proving amongst the most popular sites.

European internet analyst Alex Burmaster said: "The 2006 FIFA World Cup will go down as an extraordinary success online, the websites have provided a wonderful array of more interactive and engaging content than ever before."

10/07/2006 - Intel takes back lead in U.S. retail - Intel is back on top in retail in the United States, and it can thank Toshiba.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip giant saw its share of computer processors sold in retail outlets in the United States rise from 42.2 percent in May to 51.2 percent in June, according to Current Analysis. Meanwhile, the percentage of PCs running processors from Advanced Micro Devices declined from 57.4 percent in May to 48.5 percent in June.

The shift came because of an emphasis on inexpensive notebooks containing Celeron M chips, according to Sam Bhavnani, director of research at Current Analysis. In notebooks, Intel expanded its market share from 57.3 percent in May to 66.2 percent in June. AMD's notebook share dropped from 42.3 percent in May to 33.4 percent in June. A lot of those Celeron notebooks were Toshiba models selling for $599 and less, Bhavnani said.

Intel steadily lost market in 2005 and continued to lose ground in 2006. But since the first part of the year, Intel executives have said the company would become more aggressive due to manufacturing advances and new chips. Price cuts have also dented AMD.

10/07/2006 - Linux to get Lotus Notes - On Monday, IBM plans to unveil aversion of its Lotus Notes desktop collaboration software for Linux.

Lotus Notes on Linux 7.0.1, which will be generally available July 24, is based on the Eclipse open-source framework. That technology will also be used in the next update toLotus Notes, code-named Hannover, which is expected to ship next year.

The new desktop software, tailored to the Linux open-source operating system, is designed to help corporations that choose not to use proprietary operating systems such as Microsoft Windows or Mac OS. And once the Hannover version is released, the software will be able to function as a soup-to-nuts productivity tool, IBM said.

Lotus Notes users who use a Windows or Macintosh system will be allowed to swap to a Linux version free of charge, Ed Brill, head of IBM's worldwide Lotus Notes sales, noted. New Lotus Notes licensees will pay the same rate as Windows or Macintosh customers, he added.
