10/07/2006 - Intel takes back lead in U.S. retail - Intel is back on top in retail in the United States, and it can thank Toshiba.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip giant saw its share of computer processors sold in retail outlets in the United States rise from 42.2 percent in May to 51.2 percent in June, according to Current Analysis. Meanwhile, the percentage of PCs running processors from Advanced Micro Devices declined from 57.4 percent in May to 48.5 percent in June.

The shift came because of an emphasis on inexpensive notebooks containing Celeron M chips, according to Sam Bhavnani, director of research at Current Analysis. In notebooks, Intel expanded its market share from 57.3 percent in May to 66.2 percent in June. AMD's notebook share dropped from 42.3 percent in May to 33.4 percent in June. A lot of those Celeron notebooks were Toshiba models selling for $599 and less, Bhavnani said.

Intel steadily lost market in 2005 and continued to lose ground in 2006. But since the first part of the year, Intel executives have said the company would become more aggressive due to manufacturing advances and new chips. Price cuts have also dented AMD.

10/07/2006 - Linux to get Lotus Notes - On Monday, IBM plans to unveil aversion of its Lotus Notes desktop collaboration software for Linux.

Lotus Notes on Linux 7.0.1, which will be generally available July 24, is based on the Eclipse open-source framework. That technology will also be used in the next update toLotus Notes, code-named Hannover, which is expected to ship next year.

The new desktop software, tailored to the Linux open-source operating system, is designed to help corporations that choose not to use proprietary operating systems such as Microsoft Windows or Mac OS. And once the Hannover version is released, the software will be able to function as a soup-to-nuts productivity tool, IBM said.

Lotus Notes users who use a Windows or Macintosh system will be allowed to swap to a Linux version free of charge, Ed Brill, head of IBM's worldwide Lotus Notes sales, noted. New Lotus Notes licensees will pay the same rate as Windows or Macintosh customers, he added.

10/07/2006 - Vonage sued for voicemail patent infringement - The technology used by Vonage Holdings to deliver voicemail service to its 1.6 million VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) telephony customers infringes another company's patent, according to a lawsuit filed Monday. Klausner Technologies has asked a federal court in the eastern district of Texas to fine Vonage $180 million in damages and royalties for the patent infringement.

Klausner, a privately owned company that controls 25 patents for VOIP voicemail technology, already collects licensing fees from Time Warner Inc. for using this technology in its AOL Voicemail and VOIP voicemail services. The company asked Vonage, of Holmdel, New Jersey, to sign a similar agreement in January, but the only response has been a request for more time, Klausner claims.

10/07/2006 - EU to Cap Microsoft Daily Fine at $3.8 Million - The European Commission plans to raise the ceiling of future fines on Microsoft to 3 million euros ($3.8 million) a day if the company continues to defy an antitrust decision, a diplomatic source said on Monday. He was speaking as European competition regulators met to discuss the amount of a fine the European Union's executive arm will impose on the software giant for failing to comply with the 2004 decision that it abused its dominant market position.

The Commission declined to comment. This will be the first time the Commission has fined a company for what it sees as defying an order to remedy an abuse. The current ceiling for the fine is 2 million euros a day. The penalty, likely to run into hundreds of millions of euros, comes on top of a record 497 million euro fine the Commission already imposed in its landmark antitrust decision against Microsoft in March 2004.

10/07/2006 - No AMD K8L processors until 2008, say sources - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has recently indicated that its new K8L processor for its next-generation Socket AM3 platform will not be available until 2008, according to sources at Taiwan-based motherboard makers. AMD's K8L series is expected to be compatible with Socket AM2-based motherboards by adding both DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers, according to the sources. According to AMD's latest roadmap, AMD will start manufacturing its Socket AM2 dual-core processors using a 65nm process in the first quarter of 2007, beginning with the Athlon 64 X2 lineup, including the 3800+, 4200+ and 4600+, the sources said.

In addition to the Athlon 64 X2, the production of AMD dual-core Athlon 64FX and single-core Sempron CPUs will also migrate to the 65nm node in 2007, the sources stated, noting that the 65nm Sempron will be upgraded to support DDR2 800 instead of DDR2 667. Prior to the launch of the Socket-AM2 CPUs, AMD intends to begin terminating orders for its non-Socket-AM2 processors-Socket-939 dual-core Athlon FX/X2 (codenamed Toledo), Socket-939 single-core Athlon 64 in the 1MB L2 version (codenamed San Diego), Socket-939 single-core Athlon 64 in the 512KB L2 version and the entry-level Socket-754 Sempron (codenamed Palermo)-by the end of 2006.

10/07/2006 - Industry to stop 'music cheats' - The BPI has invited ISPs to "enforce their own terms of use" The recorded music industry's trade group has told internet service providers (ISPs) to freeze the accounts of customers who illegally fileshare. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has written to Tiscali and Cable & Wireless asking them to suspend 59 accounts for "illegal filesharing".

Until now, the BPI has focused on individuals, rather than other firms. The ISPs should now "put their houses in order and pull the plug on these people", said the BPI. We have said for months that it is unacceptable for ISPs to turn a blind eye to industrial-scale copyright infringement . The internet has made it far easier for people to share music files and thus to breach copyright.

10/07/2006 - MRAM: "the most significant memory advancement in a decade" - Semiconductor giant Freescale has started selling the next generation of memory, called MRAM, becoming the first company to produce the technology with potential useability in many of today's upcoming devices.

MRAM stands for magnetoresistive random access memory and it differs from conventional RAM in that information is stored using magnetic properties, instead of an electronic charge. This means the chips can store information once the power has been switched off.

The RAM is capable of read/write times of only 35-nanoseconds as opposed to 50-70-ns offered by DRAM. Freescale are currently only selling the units in 4Mbit capacities, though now the ice has been broken the technology should flourish and larger capacities will hopefully soon be on the way.

Analyst Will Strauss from the research firm Forward Concepts said: "This is radically new technology. People have been dabbling in this for years, but nobody has been able to make it in volume."

"This is the most significant memory introduction in this decade."

The technology can challenge both conventional RAM as well as flash memory, a market that has only taken-off over the last few years as more and more people buy memory sticks, MP3 players and portable storage cards. Unlike flash memory MRAM doesn't degrade over time, and has faster read/write times.

Experts also predict that MRAM could one day be used to store whole operating systems, boosting the start-up times of tomorrow's PCs. It seems the perfect candidate to replace today's technology as it is smaller, cheaper and faster than anything on the market at present.

The 4Mbit chips will go on sale for $25 each, and Freescale has announced it already has (unnamed) customers.
