09/07/2006 - Tour-de-Google Earth? - This year's Tour-de-France is already underway, and now you can get a taste for what awaits the 199 riders with Google Earth's 3D map of the course.
With every stage, hill and bump mapped out in exquisite detail the only thing missing from the tiltable, scrollable and zoomable map is the riders themselves. Simply install the KML file (Google Earth's geographic markup language) and you can follow the race for yourself, on your PC.
This addition, via the official Tour-de-France website, is just another example of how Google's heavy web-presence is oozing its way into a major sporting event. Not only is it a great way of giving Tour-fanatics an accurate representation of their idols' fate, it's a great mainstream advert for the Google empire and its array of toys.
You can now download a variety of KML files from the Google Earth homepage, including commercially-driven top 500 hotel lists, Discovery Channel-endorsed national park lists and of course the giant Maxim poster erected to get the lads mag onto Google Earth.
With such a powerful tool now available for free, everyone can now shout "hey there's my house!" - even Mac and Linux users.

09/07/2006 - New Windows Standard Theme in Windows Vista - Many community members have expressed concerns over the visual experience of the Windows Basic theme, and, we heard you loud and clear. In fact, we too wanted something better, and we've overhauled this theme with an all new version. For those who haven't been following the discussion, let me brief you on the issue.
Windows Vista uses the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) to deliver some amazing user experience features collectively called Windows Aero™ which include; Desktop Composition, Glass window frames with colored glass, window thumbnails and Flip3D, a new window management facility. All of the Windows Aero™ features are enabled in Windows Home Premium, our Business SKUs, and Ultimate assuming you have the appropriate hardware. On Home Basic, you get Desktop Composition with opaque colored glass windows frames.
If you don't have a display driver capable of running WDDM you'll get the Windows Vista Basic theme which does not benefit from some of the more graphically intensive features such as desktop composition and glass window frames. This is a good, clean interface called the Basic or Standard theme, but lacking the glass window frames of Aero™.

09/07/2006 - Burn DVDs slowly, warns Microsoft - Microsoft is advising Vista beta testers to burn their downloaded ISOs as slowly as 1X or 2X to avoid corrupted media. It says that its failure telemetry data is showing that three quarters of failed Vista installations are due to dodgy DVD-Rs. Of course, the really interesting thing here is not that Vista installations are failing due to recording problems, but that for the first time, we have some widescale data on the problem of lack of optical media reliability.

08/07/2006 - Voice Phishers Dialing for PayPal Dollars - Internet security experts have discovered a new phishing scam that uses voice recordings to pilfer money from PayPal accounts.
In the newest social engineering attack, identity thieves have spammed fake PayPal account compromise warnings to lure users into dialing a phone number and giving up credit card information.
Unlike normal phishing e-mails, there is no URL or response address. Instead, the e-mail urges the recipient to call a phone number and verify account details.
eWEEK confirmed that the phone number embedded in the e-mail was active and accepting credit card entries at midday on July 7.
It is a Southern California area code (805) that greets callers with the following automated voice recording: "Welcome to account verification. Please type your 16-digit card number."
The automated message simply urges users to enter credit card numbers. If incorrect card details are entered, a request for re-entry is made, further enhancing the appearance of legitimacy of the fraudulent telephone number.

08/07/2006 - Man Struck by Lightning, Blames iPod - Jason Bunch a Colorado teen was listening to his iPod while mowing the lawn on a Sunday afternoon which was when he got struck by lightning.
Next what he knew was that he was in bed bleeding from his ears and throwing up. He was also unaware how he got back inside.
His face was burned all the way down to his hip where his iPod was. His family claim his iPod attracted the lightning bolt but it didn't hit bigger things such as trees.
Gregory Stewart, an expert said this.
"There is no scientific evidence to show that lightning is 'attracted' to items like an iPod. However, if someone wearing earbuds is struck, current may travel along the wires into the ears," said Gregory Stewart of the Denver-based Lightning Reference Center. "There are documented cases of lightning traveling through wired telephones and killing the users. "
Objects such as loose change in victims' pockets have left first- and second-degree burns after a lightning strike, Stewart said.
So iPod users, no real reason to panic unless you plan listening to your iPod during a thunderstorm. :p

07/07/2006 - 'Googling' Lands In Dictionary - On Thursday, Merriam-Webster stamped its approval on a raft of words that will appear in its next dictionary update, including the verb "google" and other tech terms such as "spyware" and "mouse potato."
The words will show in the 11th edition of the "Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary," scheduled for publication later this year according to the dictionary maker, but are already included in its online dictionary.
google: (transitive verb) To use the Google search engine to obtain information about (as a person) on the World Wide Web.
Other technology-related words to debut in the 11th edition include "spyware" (software that is installed in a computer without the user's knowledge and transmits information about the user's computer activities over the Internet) and "mouse potato" (a person who spends a great deal of time using a computer).
In all, Merriam-Webster plans to add nearly 100 new entries to its dictionary.

07/07/2006 - Vista's PC-rating tool gets a revamp - Microsoft has reworked the PC assessment tool in Windows Vista after fielding complaints from hardware makers--but the changes may not be enough to completely quell concerns.
In May, the software maker promised to make changes to the Windows System Performance Rating tool, which aims to assess how capable a machine is of harnessing the upcoming operating system's new features. Critics were unhappy with the way it presented scores and how it came up with its ratings.
The newly renamed Windows Experience Index includes tweaks both in the built-in software and in the way that the assessment is described. Despite these, some partners still believe that the score generated by the tool is not a balanced reflection of a computer's abilities.
For starters, Microsoft redubbed the tool the Windows Experience Index, arguing the moniker better represents what it measures. It has also given the new name "base score" to the overall rating generated by the tool. It's an effort to clarify that the main rating is the lowest score given to an individual component, rather than an average of each of the five subratings. The tool rates a system on its processor, memory, hard drive, graphics card and gaming graphics.

07/07/2006 - Wi-Fi Ready Microsoft iPod Killer By Christmas? - Microsoft's 'iPod-killer' plans appear to promise everything one would expect from a giant company with deep pockets attempting to burst a competitor's bubble.
News today indicates the Microsoft media playing device will sport video and audio playback, and wireless connectivity. It also suggests Microsoft is preparing to answer Apple by entering every development area rumours have claimed Apple plans to play in.
And in what could be seen as a savage slap at Apple's iTunes marketshare, speculation now claims the company will offer iTunes users the opportunity to download any tracks they have purchased from Apple at no cost - but in Windows Media format.
"Microsoft will actually scan iTunes for purchased tracks and then automatically add them to your account. Microsoft will still have to pay the rights-holders for the songs, but they believe it'll be worth it to acquire converts to their new player," Engadget claims.

07/07/2006 - Apple Slowly Catching Up to Dell - Apple seems set to gain momentum in the US education market this year, according to TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence. The company ran a survey into consumer computer-buying habits. This reveals a big jump in consumer interest in Macs, suggesting the company will reap dividends as parents buy computers for their children this year.
The survey showed Apple in a tie with second-place computer maker HP in the battle for consumer hearts and minds. Both were the brand choice of 11 per cent of prospective buyers. The two firms lag behind Dell's 41 per cent brand choice figure, but that figure is sliding: Dell took 48 per cent in May and 55 per cent April.
"Among those saying it's likely they'll buy a new desktop PC in the next six months, Apple was the number two preferred brand, with 16 per cent. That's the highest number for Apple since TechnoMetrica began collecting purchase-intent data more than two years ago. In May, 6 per cent of likely desktop PC buyers said they would choose Apple," Investor's Business Daily reveals.
The researchers observed that Apple's new-found glow is a result of its move to Intel chips and its success with the market-leading iPod. TechnoMetrica analyst Constantine Kambanis observed: "Apple's brand equity has been improving slowly. This seems to be coming mainly at the expense of Dell."
