05/07/2006 - Web Experts Advise Switch to Macs - Sophos security said that the 10 most commonly found pieces of malicious software all targeted Windows machines. In contrast, it said, none of the "malware" were capable of infecting the Mac OS X operating system. Microsoft has pledged that the latest version of its operating system, known as Vista, will be its most secure yet.
"It is our goal to give PC users the control and confidence they need so they can continue to get the most out of their PCs," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "Windows Vista contains a number of new safety features that, taken together, are designed to make Windows PCs more secure and online experiences safer." Microsoft said that security on Vista would be an integral part of the operating system rather than an add-on like in previous systems.

05/07/2006 - Sapphire Ready to Ship HDMI Card - Graphics card maker Sapphire are gloating today after announcing that they will be the first to bring out a PC graphics card with a HDMI output, which is the preferred output for HD media. The card is based on ATI's Radeon X1600 GPU. The Radeon X1600 Pro HDMI's graphics core has 12 pixel pipelines and is connected across a 128-bit bus to 256MB of GDDR 3 clocked to 800MHz. The GPU runs at 500MHz. The board supports ATI's Avivo picture enhancement system.
As well as having an onboard VGA connection for backwards compatibility the card is linked to a HDCP chip on board allowing it to transmit copy-protected content. Sapphire have said the board will go on sale next week at around $155 (£85).

But there's a catch: Buyers must share their wireless Internet connections with their friends, neighbors, or even total strangers. It's all part of a daring plan to create a nationwide WiFi network on the cheap.
Today, finding WiFi access is a hit-or-miss affair. Starbucks coffee shops and McDonald's restaurants offer fee-based WiFi connections, and a growing number of cities are building municipal networks. Urbanski wants to recruit millions of ordinary people who would make WiFi available to anyone within range of the wireless routers in their homes.
People who join FON (pronounced phone) are eligible to purchase a new wireless router for $5, plus an $8 shipping fee. This router is programmed with software that lets other FON members connect to the router for free Internet access. The router also protects the owner's privacy by blocking access to any other data on his home computer network. If enough people join FON, they'll create a nationwide WiFi network, with free service to all FON members. The FON website features frequently updated maps showing where FON service is available.

05/07/2006 - Microsoft hit with second lawsuit over WGA - Microsoft has been hit with a second lawsuit over Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), its antipiracy program that checks if the Windows operating system on a machine has a valid license. The class-action suit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Seattle, just four days after the first one. The new suit lists its plaintiff as Engineered Process Controls and Univex, along with citizens Edward Misfud, David DiDomizio, and Martin Sifuentes, who are listed as owners of licensed copies of Windows XP running WGA.
The suit alleges WGA is spyware and that Microsoft mislead consumers by labeling it as a critical security update. The plaintiffs maintain Microsoft did not make users aware that WGA frequently contacted its central servers. "WGA gathers data that can easily identify individual PCs, and WGA can be modified remotely to collect additional information at Microsoft's initiation," according to the filing.

05/07/2006 - LG launches GBW-H10N Blu-ray Disc burner - LG Electronics has announced the launch of the its GBW-H10N Blu-ray Disc burner in the Taiwan market. The unit will be in stores later this week at a recommended retail price of NT$29,900 (US$923).
The GBW-H10N supports single-sided single-layer (SL) BD, DVD+RW/-RW, DVD-RAM (rewritable), CD-R/RW burning as well as SL and single-sided double-layer (DL) DVD+R/-R burning, according to LGETT. The model can also record and play back video in BD/DVD/CD formats, the company indicated.

Engineers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan are building an odour recorder capable of doing just that. Simply point the gadget at a freshly baked cookie, for example, and it will analyse its odour and reproduce it for you using a host of non-toxic chemicals.
The device could be used to improve online shopping by allowing you to sniff foods or fragrances before you buy, to add an extra dimension to virtual reality environments and even to assist military doctors treating soldiers remotely by recreating bile, blood or urine odours that might help a diagnosis.
Somboon's system will use 15 chemical-sensing microchips, or electronic noses, to pick up a broad range of aromas. These are then used to create a digital recipe from a set of 96 chemicals that can be chosen according to the purpose of each individual gadget. When you want to replay a smell, drops from the relevant vials are mixed, heated and vaporised. In tests so far, the system has successfully recorded and reproduced the smell of orange, lemon, apple, banana and melon. "We can even tell a green apple from a red apple," Somboon says.

05/07/2006 - EU Regulators Support Fining Microsoft - In a major step toward new penalties against Microsoft Corp., Europe's antitrust regulators voted unanimously Monday in favor of fining the world's largest software company for flouting a 2004 ruling, two people close to the case said.
The regulators backed EU plans to penalize the company but did not discuss the amount of the fine - which they will do at another meeting next week, according to the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity because no formal decision has been reached.
The European Commission threatened in December to levy daily fines of up to 2 million euros ($2.5 million) against Microsoft for not complying with an order to supply rivals with "complete and accurate" information to help them develop software that works smoothly with Microsoft's Windows operating system.

05/07/2006 - ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard review - Much of my time over the past month has been spent testing the new AM2 Athlon64 and Sempron processors from AMD. During this time I have not only tested these new processors, but also the supporting motherboards and chipsets. Initial testing was done on an nForce 570 Ultra motherboard using DDR2-800 memory and the results were somewhat disappointing. Although the processor performance did seem quite good, the gaming results were far from impressive as all the tests favored the older 939-pin platform.
It was not until I tested the much more expensive nForce 590 SLI chipset that I began to see the AM2 platform shine. The nForce 590 SLI delivered everything the nForce 570 Ultra was lacking and that was mostly performance! The nForce 570 Ultra feature set was most impressive and thankfully the nForce 590 SLI only gets better. Through testing I also discovered that the nForce 590 SLI seems to be a much better overclocker than the nForce 570 Ultra which is surprising.
Today we will be reviewing the ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe mainboard that features the nForce 590 SLI chipset, which is designed for the "enthusiast" segment. As you would expect from the world's most recognized motherboard manufacturer, the M2N32-SLI Deluxe is already making a name for itself as the best AM2 motherboard available thus far, and yes, it features many of the successful design elements of the widely regarded ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe.

In game news the team really begins to get bawdy with the discussion of the news that Take 2 has been subpoenaed over content in Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto. Also PS3 games might be way expensive (surprise) and they also check out the Half-Life 2 stats released this week. Finally, Joel tells us about the game that's kicking his butt this week.
