04/07/2006 - Most prefer legal music ripping - A US survey has shown that over 20 per cent of people over the age of 12 own at least one portable MP3 player. Among teens exclusively, ownership reaches 54 per cent, according to the new study by Ipsos Insight.
That last figure is something the online media industry should be pleased to hear, according to Ipsos analyst Matt Kleinschmit. Multimedia downloads such as TV shows, music videos and movies are most popular among the under-25 crowd, he said.
But while interest in multimedia downloads is rising, more music is being ripped from CDs than downloaded, Ipsos said.
About 44 per cent of all music downloaders use their existing CD collections as their primary source of MP3 player content, while 6 per cent rip from the collections of others. Only 25 per cent use fee-based music downloads, and even fewer use subscription services, the study reported.
"As the music industry starts to look at this, they are realising that the idea of the CD as the only product is an antiquated one," Kleinschmit said. "A product could be a ringtone, bundled with a song, bundled with a music video -- taking a step outside of the CD, and moving into an era where people who are younger have a completely different mindset."

04/07/2006 - Worm poses as Windows Genuine Advantage - IT security experts have warned of a worm that purports to be Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) anti-piracy tool.
WGA has recently been branded as 'spyware' in that it collects unnecessary hardware and software data from users' PCs.
The Cuebot-K worm spreads via AOL Instant Messenger, registering itself as a new system driver service called 'wgavn'. It carries the display name 'Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Notification', and runs automatically during system startup.
Users who view the list of services are told that removing or stopping the service will result in 'system instability'.
Once in place the worm disables the Windows firewall, and opens a backdoor to infected computers which allows hackers to gain remote access, spy on users, and potentially launch distributed denial-of-service attacks.
"People may think they have been sent the file from one of their AOL IM buddies, but in fact the program has no friendly intentions," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

04/07/2006 - The Internet Needs You! - The US government is asking for comments on how the internet should be run, and anyone is allowed to comment - but you'll need to be quick.
The NTIA - an arm of the US government's department of commerce - is holding a public meeting at the end of July over what should happen to the current Internet overseeing organisation ICANN when its contract is renewed in September. In the meantime, it has opened a public comment board where you are able to email comments for the US government and the rest of the world to see. The board is open now but comments need to be sent by this Friday, 7 July. The email postal address is DNSTransition@ntia.doc.gov.
It is the first time that the public has been able to directly contribute to the debate surrounding governance of the internet, and it has already seen dozens of people email their ideas and views. The question of how the internet should be run has recently gained wide international interest following public arguments over the US government's current position as overall authority. The subject is also likely to become all the more important in the next few years as the internet expands to incorporate different languages and different countries more fully.

03/07/2006 - Orange may acquire AOL UK - A REPORT in the Sunday Telegraph claims that Orange/Wanadoo - operated by France Telecom, should win the auction to buy AOL's UK internet business. The paper believes that the bid from Orange is motivated by fear of the prospect of arch rival, BSkyB, getting hold of it. However, the INQ believes that Orange would be well aware of the chaos that is surrounding the Carphone Warehouse's offer of free broadband for those on its Talk Talk fixed line service.
Mobile magazine reports that waiting times at the Carphone's dedicated Talk Talk call centres have typically reached 45 minutes. It also claims that new customers trying to get the free internet service may have to wait up to two months for the connexion to go live.

03/07/2006 - Netsky blown away in June virus charts - Netsky.q has been pushed off the top of the virus charts for the first time since 2004, according to monthly statistics released by Kaspersky Lab. Netsky.q has been the most widespread email worm since 2004 and its variant Netsky.t has risen rapidly since the beginning of 2006. However, both worms fell away sharply in June, with Netsky.q falling to 15th place and Netsky.t to 20th.
Kaspersky Lab said that it was possible that both worms will disappear entirely from the company's next top 20 list in July. The other surprise in June was that Nyxem.e returned to the charts, becoming the second most encountered virus.

03/07/2006 - Intel's multiple Meroms pin-incompatible - report - The 'Merom' Core 2 Duo mobile microprocessor Intel will ship with 'Santa Rosa', next year's Centrino upgrade, will not be quite the same Merom that it's due to launch in August. The two versions of the CPU will not be pin-compatible, it has been claimed.
According to a presentation allegedly given by Intel to Taiwanese notebook contract manufacturers and cited by Chinese-language site HKEPC, the Santa Rosa Merom will have a slightly different pin-out than the version for 'Napa', the current incarnation of Centrino. The two interconnects are dubbed Socket P and Socket M, respectively.

03/07/2006 - Palm's Direction into the Future May Open New Windows - This week Palm mentioned two future devices, one which is expected in August or September and the other by the end of this year. Sadly though Palm has stumbled onto some blocks.
First, the Treo 650 will stop shipping in Europe because of new hazardous waste
regulations that are taking effect that the phone does not comply
with. Palm is feverously working to ready its next devices currently
codenamed ‘Lennon' and ‘Nitro' to Europe and US markets as soon as it possibly can,
but the company didn't have any release dates available during the call. Not a
lot of information is available about the new devices planned by Palm, but we
do know that Nitro will be based off on the PalmOS and Lennon will run Windows
Mobile 2005. It also looks like non-phone Palm products probably won't last much longer as LifeDrive
wasn't the product Palm was hoping it would be and hasn't sold as well as
projected. This is further supported by comments made by Palm CEO Ed Colligan,
indicating that the company continues to refocus on its smartphone products.
Palm's non-smartphone handhelds and other device sales numbers have also steadily
declined over the last four years from 100% of sales in 2003 to only 25% of
sales today.
There were also some other comments made during the call that lead us
to
believe that PalmOS may be on the way out. According to Palm,
developing for two separate operating systems is too expensive, and
more devices coming to market continue to ship with Windows Mobile.
Although the change isn't
reflected in Palm's current device roadmap, the company mentioned that
it would make sense. RIM devices run on RIM OS and although it faces
heavy competition from Microsoft, RIM devices have a good deal of
enterprise level penetration. From the sounds of things, Palm is in the
same ballpark as other mobile smartphone
makers. Try as it might, Palm doesn't seem like it's gaining much
headway against RIM and the Blackberry in the enterprise and business
markets. With this in mind, we could be witnessing an entire new line
of products from Palm shipping with Windows Mobile.

01/07/2006 - Security Researcher Goes Public with MSN and Amazon Flaws - Frustrated with what he calls a lack of response from Microsoft and Amazon.com, a security researcher has gone public with details of flaws on the two companies' Web sites. The flaws could be used by attackers to steal "cookie" data files that would allow them to access Amazon.com and MSN accounts, or to display a fake login page that could be used in phishing attacks, according to Yash Kadakia, the independent security researcher who discovered the flaws.
Although the cross-site scripting flaws he discovered are generally considered to be low-risk problems, Kadakia's attack involves a technique called CRLF (Carriage Return Line Feed) injection, which can be used in a more serious and widespread attack, he said.
Kadakia said he first notified Microsoft of the problem about a year ago. But he said he was not taken seriously until late last week, when he posted screen shots of the flaw being exploited on his Web site.
The Amazon.com flaw was discovered in December, but after some initial discussions with the Web retailer, the vulnerability remained unpatched, Kadakia said. "The conversations got dropped off somewhere," he said.
A spokesman for Microsoft's public relations agency said the flaws were now being investigated. Amazon.com executives were unable to comment for this story.
Though Microsoft has made much of its focus on security, the company appears to be slower at dealing with security issues relating to its Web properties than with its software products, said Stefano Zanero, the co-founder and chief technology officer at security consultancy Secure Network SRL.

01/07/2006 - D-Link Leaves Critical Hole Open for 5 Months, And Counting - Security vulnerability discoveries were reported last February to D-Link and surprisingly they still have not been fixed yet! The vulnerability allows remote code to be executed through the routersfirmware potentially leaving affected customers vulnerable to attack. The vulnerability can give an attacker complete control over any andall network traffic.
The effected products are:
- DI-524 (Wireless)
- DI-604*
- DI-624 (Wireless)
- DI-784* (Wireless)
- EBR-2310*
- WBR-1310 (Wireless)
- WBR-2310 (Wireless)
*(Denotes firmware update available)
D-Linkhas hardly said a word publicly about the issue and has only patched asmall portion of the devices affected. In fact the only word directlyfrom D-Link is from a supposed support staff member in a post on the DSLReports.com forums.According to that person the issue has to do with UPnP, a LAN sideprotocol thus reasoning that the problem isn't susceptible to WAN orinternet side attacks.
Unfortunately because some of theeffected routers are wireless it isn't unlikely that an attacker mightcompromise the router by gaining access to the wireless portion of therouter and injecting malicious code. Even secured wireless routersaren't foolproof and given enough time and resources these too can becompromised. The only advice that can be given at this point fromsecurity researchers is to discontinue using the affected routers untila fix is published by D-Link as there is nothing the consumer can to domitigate the issue themselves.
D-Link was also recently in the news when its engineers began using a FreeBSD NTP top level server as the primary time server for its devices. The issue was solved eventually, and new routers stopped using the NTP server.

01/07/2006 - Apple Seals Deal with Maine Education System - Maine educators have agreed a $41 million contract with Apple to continue its existing notebooks-for-kids deal. Under the scheme, seventh- and eighth-graders in the area are provided with portable Macs, as are their teachers. The deal means Apple will provide 32,000 students and 4,000 teachers with portable Macs.
The deal includes warranty and service cover and other perks. It works out to cost approximately $289 per notebook per year - which is less than the scheme's first iteration as agreed in 2002.
Maine educators say the scheme is the biggest of its kind in the world.
