01/07/2006 - Security Researcher Goes Public with MSN and Amazon Flaws - Frustrated with what he calls a lack of response from Microsoft and Amazon.com, a security researcher has gone public with details of flaws on the two companies' Web sites.
The flaws could be used by attackers to steal "cookie" data files that would allow them to access Amazon.com and MSN accounts, or to display a fake login page that could be used in phishing attacks, according to Yash Kadakia, the independent security researcher who discovered the flaws.
Although the cross-site scripting flaws he discovered are generally considered to be low-risk problems, Kadakia's attack involves a technique called CRLF (Carriage Return Line Feed) injection, which can be used in a more serious and widespread attack, he said.
Kadakia said he first notified Microsoft of the problem about a year ago. But he said he was not taken seriously until late last week, when he posted screen shots of the flaw being exploited on his Web site.
The Amazon.com flaw was discovered in December, but after some initial discussions with the Web retailer, the vulnerability remained unpatched, Kadakia said. "The conversations got dropped off somewhere," he said.
A spokesman for Microsoft's public relations agency said the flaws were now being investigated. Amazon.com executives were unable to comment for this story.
Though Microsoft has made much of its focus on security, the company appears to be slower at dealing with security issues relating to its Web properties than with its software products, said Stefano Zanero, the co-founder and chief technology officer at security consultancy Secure Network SRL.

01/07/2006 - D-Link Leaves Critical Hole Open for 5 Months, And Counting -
Security vulnerability discoveries were reported last February to D-Link and surprisingly they still have not been fixed yet! The vulnerability allows remote code to be executed through the routersfirmware potentially leaving affected customers vulnerable to attack.The vulnerability can give an attacker complete control over any andall network traffic.

D-Linkhas hardly said a word publicly about the issue and has only patched asmall portion of the devices affected. In fact the only word directlyfrom D-Link is from a supposed support staff member in a post on the
DSLReports.com forums.According to that person the issue has to do with UPnP, a LAN sideprotocol thus reasoning that the problem isn't susceptible to WAN orinternet side attacks.
Unfortunately because some of theeffected routers are wireless it isn't unlikely that an attacker mightcompromise the router by gaining access to the wireless portion of therouter and injecting malicious code. Even secured wireless routersaren't foolproof and given enough time and resources these too can becompromised. The only advice that can be given at this point fromsecurity researchers is to discontinue using the affected routers untila fix is published by D-Link as there is nothing the consumer can to domitigate the issue themselves.
D-Link was also recently in the news when its engineers began using a FreeBSD NTP top level server as the primary time server for its devices. The issue was solved eventually, and new routers stopped using the NTP server.

01/07/2006 - Apple Seals Deal with Maine Education System - Maine educators have agreed a $41 million contract with Apple to continue its existing notebooks-for-kids deal. Under the scheme, seventh- and eighth-graders in the area are provided with portable Macs, as are their teachers. The deal means Apple will provide 32,000 students and 4,000 teachers with portable Macs.
The deal includes warranty and service cover and other perks. It works out to cost approximately $289 per notebook per year - which is less than the scheme's first iteration as agreed in 2002.
Maine educators say the scheme is the biggest of its kind in the world.

01/07/2006 - Dell's Exploding Laptops Under Investigation - Dell is investigating reports that one of its laptops exploded during a conference in Osaka recently. A series of photographs of the portable pyromaniac's delight appeared online within hours of the incident, a Reuters report says.
You can see these images in a report detailing the incident that's available on the Inquirer website. "It's only a matter of time until an incident like this breaks out on a plane," the report warns. In December 2005 the company recalled some of its laptop batteries in response to overheating problems.
Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said it was too early to draw conclusions, but stressed that it appeared unconnected to a battery overheating problem.

01/07/2006 - Apple Stock Option Problems - Apple has found problems with some of its stock option grants made between 1997 and 2001, one of which was to CEO Steve Jobs, the company disclosed on Thursday. The irregularities were uncovered in an internal investigation, Apple said. The company has now hired outside attorneys to perform an investigation and has informed the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
The option grant to Jobs subsequently was cancelled, and Jobs didn't financially benefit from it, according to Apple.
In the past few months, problems with stock options have been uncovered at numerous high-tech companies. Some grants of options were backdated, or timed to a low point in the company's stock, so the recipient could buy stock cheaply and reap a bigger windfall by selling it. In a May 16 report, the Center for Financial Research & Analysis named 17 companies as being at risk for having backdated options.
Other companies flagged by CFRA include RSA Security, Juniper Networks and Broadcom.

01/07/2006 - Apple Acknowledges MacBook Stain Issue - Apple has responded to widespread reports that claim some MacBooks become discoloured after a few short weeks of use. A vocal minority of customers have claimed that the new Macs become discoloured, mainly around the areas on which users rest their hands on the keyboard.
Some reports have claimed Apple to have admitted that the problem exists, but this isn't yet the case. The company is requesting that users who claim to have been affected should contact Apple support, as the MacBooks remain under warranty and the company needs to explore the claimed problem to establish its cause.
In a statement, Apple said: "Apple is aware of this input and is looking into it. If a customer has any technical issues, they should contact AppleCare."

30/06/2006 - Super-Slim Lasers Promise to Boost Optical Disc Capacity - Researchers at Japan's Kyoto University have recently announced a breakthrough method for shaping laser beams that could result in optical disc capacities up to ten times higher than what's current available from state-of-the-art HD DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Using several layers of so-called photonic crystals incorporated into a small semiconductor chip, the researchers were able to manipulate a light beam's constituent photons in such a way that the resulting laser output could be shaped into a number of exotic beam patterns -- such as hollow beams, concentric hollow beams, and most importantly for optical disc capacity, solid beams with diameters much smaller than had been previously achievable.
The best part about this technology is that the narrow beams can be formed without changing the wavelength of the laser, meaning that the technique could theoretically be applied to existing blue lasers, enabling next-gen optical discs to hold hundreds of gigabytes worth of data. Or, to put this in layman's terms, the $1,000 BD-P1000 you're planning on buying will now be, like, totally obsolete before you even tear open the box.

Designed to work with the new Viiv platform - its attempt to turn Media Centers into your TV of choice - the Entertainment Driver is apparently a close relation of the ones used in the BMW Sauber F1 cars, only without the team radio and gear shift buttons.
You'll be able to program its array of buttons to help you navigate your multimedia PC (Hi-Grade's DMS is our current fave Viiv number) and race around movies, TV and websites without swapping between ten handsets.
We doubt it'll work with racing sims, but at least you'll get a more interesting way of rifling through Google's videos.
The remote is only at the prototype stage at the moment, so there's no news on availability or pricing yet - we'll let you know if it goes into full production.

30/06/2006 - Turning Wine into Windows on a Mac - It used to be that running Windows programs on a Mac was a slow, painful process. There was only one option: running Virtual PC emulation software. But with Apple Computer's shift to Intel chips, the pool of options has expanded considerably. For one, Apple has its own Boot Camp software, which lets Intel-based Macs boot up with either Windows or Mac OS X. Meanwhile, start-up Parallels has released software that lets the Microsoft operating system run in a separate virtual machine with only a slight loss in performance.
Soon there will be yet another option, which, unlike the current choices, doesn't even require a copy of Windows. A company called CodeWeavers is using an open-source technology called Wine to allow some Windows programs to run under Mac OS X. CodeWeavers is in early testing with CrossOver Office for Mac now and plans to release a final version of the software in July or August. CEO Jeremy White said he would have liked to have seen his product out before the rivals.
