29/06/2006 - Microsoft exec jumps ship for Google - It hasn't been a good month for Microsoft's Google-fighters. So bad that one left abruptly last week, and another decided this week to switch teams.
Vic Gundotra, a general manager for platform evangelism at Microsoft and a 15-year employee, has agreed to join Google after first spending a year working on charitable endeavors.
"Mr. Gundotra has resigned from Microsoft and entered into an agreement with Google," Google spokesman Steve Langdon wrote in an emailed statement. "He will not be a Google employee for one year and intends to spend that time on philanthropic pursuits. We are uncertain what precise role he will play when he begins working for Google, but he has a broad range of skills and experience which we believe will be valuable to Google."
Gundotra had been charged with getting developers to write programs that build on top of Microsoft's desktop software and online services. Most recently he had been working out a strategy to compete with the draw of Google's newer, Web-based software applications.
His departure comes shortly after the abrupt departure of Martin Taylor, a corporate vice president charged countering Google by marketing Microsoft's Windows Live and MSN services.

29/06/2006 - Attack code out for Apple flaw - Attack code that exploits a flaw in Apple Computer's Mac OS X was publicly released Wednesday, increasing the urgency to patch.
The code's arrival comes just a day after Apple made an update available for its operating system. The malicious program takes advantage of a locally exploitable vulnerability in an operating system component called "launchd".
"Attackers may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges," Symantec said in a security alert to customers that was updated on Thursday.
Kevin Finisterre, a security researcher at Digital Munition, created the exploit. Earlier this year, Finisterre created the Inqtana worm, which targets Mac OS X and spreads using an 8-month-old vulnerability in Apple's Bluetooth software. His actions are in part to demonstrate that Apple software is notunbreakable, he has said.

29/06/2006 - Microsoft delays Office 2007 again - Microsoft said on Thursday that it is making another slight delay tothe planned arrival time for Office 2007. The update had been expectedto arrive for volume license customers in October and have a mainstreamlaunch in January.
Now Microsoft said it will be finished by the end of the calendar year and made broadly available sometime early next year.
"Based on internal testing and the beta 2 feedback aroundproduct performance, we are revising our development schedule todeliver the 2007 system release by the end of year 2006, with broadgeneral availability in early 2007," a Microsoft representative said inan e-mail. "Feedback on quality and performance will ultimatelydetermine the exact dates."
Microsoft said earlier Thursday that it had nearly reached itsself-imposed limit for testers of the current Windows Vista beta, withplans to stop allowing new downloads after Friday. In addition to thepublicly available beta 2 version of Office, Microsoft this week made available a Web-based test version of the software.

29/06/2006 - Microsoft releases final IE 7 beta - A new Internet Explorer beta shows that Microsoft is trying to put its browser security woes behind it.
The software maker plans to release the third and last beta version of IE 7 on Thursday, getting closer to final delivery by the end of 2006. It will be the first major update to the popular Web browser in five years, and much of the focus for the new version is on security.
"Security was the No. 1 investment we made in IE 7, in terms of our development resources," Tony Chor, Microsoft's group program manager for the browser, said in an interview.

29/06/2006 - Palm and Xerox Settle Graffiti Dispute - Palm and Xerox have been locked in a battle for nine years over the Graffiti software (known as Unistrokes from Xerox ) which allows users to input data by writing alphabet like characters onto their Palm screen.
Xerox's input technology, Unistrokes, was patented in 1997. The patent in question covers Unistroke touch screen input symbols. The lawsuit was against Palm as well as its former parent company, 3Com.
Xerox originally filed for its patent in October of 1993. The first handhelds running the Palm OS, the Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000, were released in April of 1996 by U.S. Robotics. These included Graffiti.
The settlement was reached when Palm agreed to pay $22.5 million to Xerox during its fourth fiscal quarter. Xerox said proceeds from the agreement will be offset in its second quarter results by costs related to the expected settlement of other legal matters.

Original programs from the channel can now be downloaded for as little as $1.99 per episode.
This comes following a similar move by NBC to distribute its own shows via the digital music store. Programs such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Law and Order, and The Office have already been available for some time.
This move is being made by various companies to provide viewers with legal means to re-watch shows, and persuade them not to download them illegally from P2P services such as torrents.

Before purchasing the company, Comcast itself was a client, delivering over 2 million short videos a day on its comcast.net website.
The online video space has become a hot area in the last year, with the growth of high speed Internet access allowing easier delivery; sites including YouTube, Google Video and Yahoo! Music have all seen a strong growth in user figures.
"Our long term vision would be to be able to provide digital media video to whatever platform our customers are looking at," said Sam Schwartz, executive vice president of Comcast Internet Media.

The device will be able to help re-grow teeth that may have been lost in an accident, and to fix fractured teeth and jawbones.
Jie Chen, an engineering professor and nano-circuit design expert, helped create the tiny ultrasound machine that gently massages gums and stimulates tooth growth from the root once inserted into a person's mouth, mounted on braces or a removable plastic crown.
The wireless device, smaller than a pea, must be activated for 20 minutes each day for four months to stimulate growth, he said.
With the help of Chen and Ying Tsui, another engineering professor, the initial massive handheld device was shrunk to fit inside a person's mouth.

29/06/2006 - IBM Tops Supercomputer List - The new list of fastest supercomputers is out, and IBM has taken the top three spots, closely followed by Intel in the next three places. AMD also makes an appearance in the top 10 with a cluster built on the Opteron processor.
Intel completely dominates the list however, with a 60.4% share, while IBM are stuck in second place with just 16.6% of the supercomputer processor market.
The No. 1 position was again claimed by the BlueGene/L System, a joint development of IBM and DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and installed at DOE's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif. BlueGene/L also occupied the No. 1 position on the last three TOP500 lists. It has reached a Linpack benchmark performance of 280.6 TFlop/s ("teraflops" or trillions of calculations per second) and still remains the only system ever to exceed the level of 100 TFlop/s. This system is expected to remain the No. 1 Supercomputer in the world for the next few editions of the TOP500 list.
Even as processor frequencies seem to stall the performance improvements of full systems seen at the very high end of scientific computing shows no sign of slowing down. This time the last 158 systems on the list in June 2005 are too small to be included any longer, which represents a lower than average turn-over rate after two record breaking rates in the last lists. However, the growth of average performance remains stable and ahead of Moore's Law.
