28/06/2006 - Apple Releases Firmware Update for 17-Inch MacBook Pros - Apple has released a firmware update for the 17-inch MacBook Pro. The update adjusts fan behaviour in the 17-inch MacBook Pro. Apple warns that as this is a firmware update it is essential to follow the company's installation instructions to the letter.
To install the 1MB update users must quit all open applications and then click Restart in the firmware install window. A status bar indicates the progress of the update. During the update the Mac's fans will run at full speed, but will return to normal once the update completes. The Mac will then restart.

28/06/2006 - Sun: Open source is about self-interest - For open source to prosper, people need to stop thinking of it as "free" and instead think of it as "connected capitalism," delegates at an open-source conference in London were told on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Open Source Business Conference, Sun Microsystems' chief open-source officer, Simon Phipps, said that open source had been focused for too long on sharing code instead of what he called "the enrichment of the commons."
The open-source community needed to look to the lessons of capitalism and capitalists, said Phipps. Referring to the recent announcement that billionaire Warren Buffett was donating much of his wealth to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Phipps pointed out that "Warren Buffett is driving gold--he is creating wealth."
Expanding on his message, Phipps said that the message of open source was that "creating and maintaining a completely independent code base was ultimately self-defeating." Instead, the future was in co-operation and in organizations preserving what was ultimately of value to them. "This is not volunteerism," said Phipps. "It is directed self-interest, synchronized self-interest and there is nothing wrong with self-interest."

Microsoft is launching a computer monitor that it claims will best show the new functions and features in its Vista operating system.
The software giant is working with Samsung to build a high-resolution, 22in widescreen Vista Monitor, which is due for release around the same time as the operating system.
Vista has been designed to look best when using a widescreen display, and Microsoft wants to ensure that as far as possible users take advantage of this. By producing a Microsoft-badged monitor, it can promote widescreen Vista use to those who upgrade from Windows XP or buy a new PC running the operating system.
Samsung confirmed it is working with Microsoft to build the monitors. Ami Randhawa, monitor product manager at Samsung, said: ‘The demand is being driven by Vista. It will be branded Microsoft, but built by Samsung.'
Microsoft was contacted, but said: ‘Microsoft does not comment on rumour and speculation.'

28/06/2006 - More on Volume License Key changes, end to VLK piracy? - "Corporate Edition" versions of Windows have been the blessing of both IT workers and casual pirates since the days of Windows 95, when the operating system first started asking for a license key on installation. Large firms and OEMs who did not want to go through the hassle of typing in a CD key for every install received Volume License Keys (VLKs) that could be used on as many installs as necessary. Microsoft relied on the honor system to ensure that companies did not abuse this privilege, but it looks as if with Vista this system may be ending:
"We are making changes to the process to Vista and a new approach to VLK licensing," Mike Sievert, corporate vice president of Windows client marketing for Microsoft told CRN during a recent interview. "We're training our enterprise customers and we'll do some key management for customers that's more automated and makes reporting easier."
The exact details of the "new approach" to VLKs haven't been made clear, but Ward Ralston, a senior technology product manager at Microsoft, has confirmed that the company is "introducing the notion of a key management server" for Windows Vista Server. This program will require licensed customers to check in their keys and Client Access Licenses (CALs) every 30 days, via an automatic reporting process. The procedure for the Vista client will likely not require a key management server, but may also "phone home" periodically to report on the status of various VLK installs.

28/06/2006 - Windows Vista Beta 2 / Longhorn Server Update (KB919946) - Microsoft have started releasing updates during the Windows Vista/Longhorn beta, this one is of particular interest due to the fact that many people -including myself, have a hyper-threaded system with Windows Vista Beta 2 installed on it (not my primary system, in case you were wondering).
Update for Windows Vista Beta 2 and Windows Codename Longhorn Server Beta 2 (KB919946)
Install this update to fix an issue where in the presence of Internet Protocol security (IPsec) or Windows Firewall, a race condition can be hit on multi-processor (or hyper-threaded) systems causing memory corruption, leading to a system crash.
It is unknown if this affects the recently released build 5456, fiile date is 27th so it probably does.

28/06/2006 - Microsoft's WGA Notifications Service Goes Live - Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) notifications service has moved out of pilot testing and will now reach out and touch millions of mainstream Windows XP users in the coming months. WGA is software distributed through Microsoft's Automatic Update and Windows Update that identifies fake or counterfeit versions of Windows and informs those who fail validation how to get a legal copy of Windows. The updated WGA Notifications package was released Tuesday.
One year ago, Microsoft launched WGA Validation, a program that urged customers to check to ensure that their copy of Windows is authentic or legal when using Windows Update. The first phase of WGA Notifications -- which alerts customers that run Windows software deemed to be counterfeit or illegal -- was launched in Norway and sweden in November 2005 and in five additional countries last February. In April, Microsoft expanded the pilot program to a segment of Windows XP customers in the U.S., United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. As of this week, the pilot phase of the program ends and Microsoft will do a phased roll-out globally to all Windows XP users, Microsoft said.

28/06/2006 - Commentary: Dell using AMD as bargaining chip with Intel - Dell's adopting AMD CPUs is related to Intel's decision to cancel rebates for desktop OEMs, and it is just a matter of time when the computer giant will step further and launch AMD-based notebooks and desktops if the number one chipmaker stands by its new pricing scheme, according to industry soruces.
In May, Dell announced that it will introduce servers based on AMD chips. A few days later, Intel told Taiwan-based makers that it will begin offering OEM and channel players the same prices and that it will stop offering rebates to OEMs that place large-quantity orders. The new "equal price" scheme is expected to take effect in September.
