26/06/2006 - P2P Users Beware, Your Personal Info Could Be Out There - Users of P2P (peer-to-peer) file-sharing services may be sharing more than they bargained for, a former White House cybersecurity advisor has warned. Security researchers have found thousands of files with sensitive information by searching through file-sharing networks, said Howard Schmidt, CEO at R&H Security Consulting. Schmidt, who has also worked as chief security officer for Microsoft, made the comments during an SDForum seminar.

Medical records, financial information and router passwords have all popped up on P2P networks, often after users inadvertently share folders containing the data. "People don't realise you're not just sharing your music," Schmidt said. "You're sharing your personal files."

Millions of households still use P2P services, though the practice of illegally downloading music from these services has been on the decline, according to the NPD Group research firm. And with all of those possible victims, criminals see an opportunity to search these networks for sensitive information, Schmidt said. "These are real live search strings the bad guys are using: bank such-and-such statement for August, bank such-and-such May statement, account summaries, account stop payment, internet scams, bank routing information," he said.

26/06/2006 - Study reveals PC users will pay more for greener PCs - According to a study carried out by Ipsos-Mori for the environmental activist foundation Greenpeace, PC users are willing to pay up to $197 (€156, £108) more for a PC containing less harmful chemicals, to make the recycling process easier.

Chinese users were willing to pay the most, hitting the $197 mark whereas UK users are only prepared to pay $117 for the planet's sake.

Whether the study's results would be mirrored in reality is another matter however, despite the mounting mountain of electronic waste generated as the technological world speeds along at its usual pace. Old computer components, cases, monitors and peripherals all contain harmful chemicals such as mercury in switches, arsenic in older CRT monitors and lead in solder.

The problem surrounding the recycling of older PCs exists due to the difficulty of destroying these aging components, with the vast number of harmful chemicals within.

Perhaps the revolution is nigh, however, as computer manufacturer Dell has announced its commitment to removing all brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) by 2009. It seems other companies have finally woken up and smelled the chromium as Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Hewlett Packard have each pledged to reducing the number of chemicals in their products.

What do you think? How much would you be prepared to pay in order to aid the recycling process?

26/06/2006 - Windows Vista Build 5456 Overview and Screenshot Gallery - Little more than a month after issuing a bug-laden Windows Vista Beta 2, Microsoft has shipped its first post-Beta 2 interim build of the next Windows and it makes up a lot of lost ground. Indeed, it's hard not to view this build and not believe that Microsoft is absolutely back on track.

Though there are few major changes in build 5456, which, despite the naming convention used on its desktop, is part of the release candidate (RC) build tree, and not a direct successor to Beta 2. But we shouldn't expect major changes at this stage: After all, Windows Vista was mostly feature complete as far back as February 2006. But what we get in build 5456 is dramatic improvement in reliability, usability, performance, and fit and finish. It is, quite simply, the build Microsoft should have shipped as Beta 2 to millions of people around the world. This build is so much better than Beta 2, in fact, that I'm begging the company to offer it to everyone that signed up for the public beta through the Community Public Preview (CPP).

26/06/2006 - Apple takes aim at Redmond with Leopard - Despite the very similar release schedules for Windows Vista and Apple's Leopard, there has been very little hype surrounding the development of the latter, that is, until now. There is still over a month to go before Apple takes the covers off the next version of OS X, but a couple of screenshots, claiming to be from Leopard, have started the rumour mills buzzing.

One of the rumored features is said to be OS-level integration of a geographical mapping technology, similar to Microsoft's Virtual Earth. According to sources, Apple has been working on a similar approach, but modeled after Google's Maps feature.

Another rumored feature of Leopard -- one which appears to be shown in the unauthenticated Leopard screenshots -- is the unification of Apple's Address Book and iCal applications into a single app.

Still, the juiciest rumors surround Apple's Boot Camp and where the company may or may not take the technology. Although sources did not explicitly say that Boot Camp would be transformed into a complete virtualization solution, they did say the technology is being groomed as a rival to Microsoft's Virtual PC Express.

26/06/2006 - Adobe to bundle Google Toolbar - Google has reached an agreement with Adobe which will see future releases of Shockwave being distributed with the option to install the Google IE toolbar. Shockwave is a plugin used in browsers to display interactive content such as games and advertisment.

The deal comes as part of Google's attempt to have their toolbar installed everywhere around the world, although this current bundle will only be targeting it at users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This move is seen by some as a pre-emptive strike at Microsoft, who are releasing IE7 in the near future, which features MSN search as the default search provider.

The Google toolbar replaces the current offering of the Yahoo search toolbar, although Adobe Flash Player and Adobe PDF Reader will continue to bundle the Yahoo toolbar for the moment.

Google already have similar deals in place with Dell and Lexar, who both pre-install the Google Desktop search software on their products before delivering them to customers.

25/06/2006 - Microsoft Planning Vista Promotions During Holidays - When Microsoft announced that it would not release Windows Vista in time for the holiday season, many industry analysts felt the entire PC market may suffer as people put off purchases until the next generation OS was finally available. In order to ease the worries of OEM's and reinforce the general consumer's confidence that it will be a sound investment to buy a new PC during the holidays, Microsoft is planning on offering some kind of promotional deal allowing people to upgrade their brand new Windows XP system to a Windows Vista easily and affordably.

No details have been released, but those same worrisome industry analysts feel that looking back on the promotions MS offered with XP's release will give a clue as to what we can expect when Vista finally hits the shelves. At the time of Windows XP's release, OEM's offered recent customers a coupon allowing them to upgrade their new computers for free or, in some cases, for a small $39 fee. This move, if applied to Vista's release, should help thwart some consumer's concerns at the time of year where OEM's make most of their profit.

25/06/2006 - Apple will staff Best Buy with their own employees - Apple will staff Best Buy locations selling its computers with its own employees in a similar fashion as the company has done with its displays at many CompUSA stores.

The Apple-badged workers, or Apple Solutions Consultants (ASCs), will train Best Buy employees in using and selling Mac computers and assist them in selling the systems to customers, but all sales will officially be logged by Best Buy, sources told Think Secret.

Best Buy PR director Lisa Hawks declined to comment to Think Secret regarding details of the company's agreement with Apple. The retailer's announcement last week stated only that Macs would be sold by Best Buy employees that have undergone training by Apple.

Beginning this past May, Best Buy tried its hand at selling Macs once more in a handful of southern California locations. The experiment is said to have been met with a much warmer response this time around and should be expanded to a number of Best Buy locations this fall.
