Windows Live Spaces will replace the current MSN spaces where users can create personal profiles, blogs and photo galleries. The new release promises tighter integration with other Live products, such as Windows Live Messenger, with features like Friends Explorer, allowing you to network with friends of others and create new relationships.
Windows Live gadgets also play a role in the new design, allowing users to quickly and easily add new content from a gallery of pre-made gadgets, or create their own.

26/06/2006 - Adobe to bundle Google Toolbar - Google has reached an agreement with Adobe which will see future releases of Shockwave being distributed with the option to install the Google IE toolbar. Shockwave is a plugin used in browsers to display interactive content such as games and advertisment.
The deal comes as part of Google's attempt to have their toolbar installed everywhere around the world, although this current bundle will only be targeting it at users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This move is seen by some as a pre-emptive strike at Microsoft, who are releasing IE7 in the near future, which features MSN search as the default search provider.
The Google toolbar replaces the current offering of the Yahoo search toolbar, although Adobe Flash Player and Adobe PDF Reader will continue to bundle the Yahoo toolbar for the moment.
Google already have similar deals in place with Dell and Lexar, who both pre-install the Google Desktop search software on their products before delivering them to customers.

25/06/2006 - Microsoft Planning Vista Promotions During Holidays - When Microsoft announced that it would not release Windows Vista in time for the holiday season, many industry analysts felt the entire PC market may suffer as people put off purchases until the next generation OS was finally available. In order to ease the worries of OEM's and reinforce the general consumer's confidence that it will be a sound investment to buy a new PC during the holidays, Microsoft is planning on offering some kind of promotional deal allowing people to upgrade their brand new Windows XP system to a Windows Vista easily and affordably.
No details have been released, but those same worrisome industry analysts feel that looking back on the promotions MS offered with XP's release will give a clue as to what we can expect when Vista finally hits the shelves. At the time of Windows XP's release, OEM's offered recent customers a coupon allowing them to upgrade their new computers for free or, in some cases, for a small $39 fee. This move, if applied to Vista's release, should help thwart some consumer's concerns at the time of year where OEM's make most of their profit.

25/06/2006 - Apple will staff Best Buy with their own employees - Apple will staff Best Buy locations selling its computers with its own employees in a similar fashion as the company has done with its displays at many CompUSA stores.
The Apple-badged workers, or Apple Solutions Consultants (ASCs), will train Best Buy employees in using and selling Mac computers and assist them in selling the systems to customers, but all sales will officially be logged by Best Buy, sources told Think Secret.
Best Buy PR director Lisa Hawks declined to comment to Think Secret regarding details of the company's agreement with Apple. The retailer's announcement last week stated only that Macs would be sold by Best Buy employees that have undergone training by Apple.
Beginning this past May, Best Buy tried its hand at selling Macs once more in a handful of southern California locations. The experiment is said to have been met with a much warmer response this time around and should be expanded to a number of Best Buy locations this fall.

25/06/2006 - Microsoft Scraps WinFS for Windows Vista - Microsoft has scrapped plans for a WinFS Beta 2. Instead, elements of WinFS are being rolled into other products.
Going back to the early days in the development of what is now known as Windows Vista, there has been the concept of a new file system known as WinFS, which was to be an integral element in the new operating system. Last year, with great fanfare and a lot of bad press reaction, Microsoft "dropped" the WinFS filing system from what was Windows Longhorn at the time.
The notion of the new file system being an integral part of the new platform was replaced by a new plan: develop the new Windows independently, and then ship WinFS as a standalone product in conjunction with the release of Windows Vista. Since WinFS was initially referred to as one of the "pillars" of Longhorn/Vista, once it was pulled out there naturally had to be a bit of damage control on Microsoft's part to convince the public that this "pillar" was not, in fact, that much of a "pillar" after all.
It has taken some time, but they have succeeded in this, to some extent, and we haven't heard much about the "loss of WinFS" recently. Meanwhile, the WinFS Team has been toiling away at what was to be the separate delivery of the new technology. Now comes word that this will not happen after all. WinFS is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

25/06/2006 - Windows Vista Build 5456 Released - Microsoft has just released an updated version of Windows Vista to technical beta testers. Build 5456 is available in either x86 or x64 flavors right now on Microsoft Connect. Neosmart just posted some additional information about this build:
"Some of the new features include a revamped Aero/DWM subsystem, and a completely overhauled and siginficantly less obtrusive
UAP for all those that couldn't stand the previous one. From what we have been told by Microsoft, the Time Zone bug that plagued previous builds of Windows Vista has been patched, and quite a few fixes in the Regional Settings and IME have been patched."
This is the first beta release of Vista since Microsoft released Beta 2 to a much wider testing audience in late May.

24/06/2006 - AMD in deal to build chip factory in New York - Advanced Micro Devices has entered into a nonbinding agreement with the state of New York that calls for building a $3.2 billion microprocessor plant in Saratoga Springs.
AMD's prospective fabrication plant is tagged for a 200-acre site at the Luther Forest Technology Campus, the chipmaker said on Friday. AMD envisions a 1.2 million square-foot facility, which would likely produce microprocessors based on 32-nanometer manufacturing technology. The company, however, has to first deliver its chips based on 45-nanometer manufacturing technology, which it expects to introduce in mid-2008.
The agreement calls for AMD to begin construction as early as mid-2007, possibly putting the plant online in 2010. The state of New York has offered to help subsidize the $3.2 billion cost with $1 billion in incentives.
AMD's announcement comes a day after Intel issued a statement regarding the opening of its 65-nanometer plant in Ireland. The new plant and 65-nanometer technology are expected to help Intel move forward with a new line of multicore goods.

24/06/2006 - Microsoft to launch Windows CE 6.0 by end of 2006 - Microsoft will officially launch its Windows CE 6.0 OS for embedded and mobile devices in the first half of its fiscal year 2007 (July 2006-June 2007), a move which is likely to bring Windows CE 6.0-powered handheld devices to the market early next year, according to Eddie Wu, Microsoft's senior director of device solutions sales, Asia and worldwide ODM ecosystems.
Wu made the remark yesterday in Taipei as the software giant launched a beta version of its Windows CE 6.0 in the Taiwan market.
According to Wu, Microsoft's Windows CE embedded system currently accounted for 30% of the world's handheld device market, with the percentage points climbing to 50% in the PDA segment. Overall, about 10 million handheld devices (excluding GPS devices) used globally are powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, Wu added.
In addition, revenues of Microsoft's embedded system business unit in Asia are expected to exceed US$100 million in fiscal 2006, which ends June 30 this year, Wu noted.
