25/06/2006 - Windows Vista Build 5456 Released - Microsoft has just released an updated version of Windows Vista to technical beta testers. Build 5456 is available in either x86 or x64 flavors right now on Microsoft Connect. Neosmart just posted some additional information about this build:

This is the first beta release of Vista since Microsoft released Beta 2 to a much wider testing audience in late May.

24/06/2006 - AMD in deal to build chip factory in New York - Advanced Micro Devices has entered into a nonbinding agreement with the state of New York that calls for building a $3.2 billion microprocessor plant in Saratoga Springs.
AMD's prospective fabrication plant is tagged for a 200-acre site at the Luther Forest Technology Campus, the chipmaker said on Friday. AMD envisions a 1.2 million square-foot facility, which would likely produce microprocessors based on 32-nanometer manufacturing technology. The company, however, has to first deliver its chips based on 45-nanometer manufacturing technology, which it expects to introduce in mid-2008.
The agreement calls for AMD to begin construction as early as mid-2007, possibly putting the plant online in 2010. The state of New York has offered to help subsidize the $3.2 billion cost with $1 billion in incentives.
AMD's announcement comes a day after Intel issued a statement regarding the opening of its 65-nanometer plant in Ireland. The new plant and 65-nanometer technology are expected to help Intel move forward with a new line of multicore goods.

24/06/2006 - Microsoft to launch Windows CE 6.0 by end of 2006 - Microsoft will officially launch its Windows CE 6.0 OS for embedded and mobile devices in the first half of its fiscal year 2007 (July 2006-June 2007), a move which is likely to bring Windows CE 6.0-powered handheld devices to the market early next year, according to Eddie Wu, Microsoft's senior director of device solutions sales, Asia and worldwide ODM ecosystems.
Wu made the remark yesterday in Taipei as the software giant launched a beta version of its Windows CE 6.0 in the Taiwan market.
According to Wu, Microsoft's Windows CE embedded system currently accounted for 30% of the world's handheld device market, with the percentage points climbing to 50% in the PDA segment. Overall, about 10 million handheld devices (excluding GPS devices) used globally are powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, Wu added.
In addition, revenues of Microsoft's embedded system business unit in Asia are expected to exceed US$100 million in fiscal 2006, which ends June 30 this year, Wu noted.

Politician Drops 'Porn' Lawsuit Against Google - A Long Island politician has dropped a federal lawsuit that had claimedthe search engine company Google Inc. profits from child pornography. Jeffrey Toback, a member of the Nassau County Legislature fromOceanside, filed suit in May claiming Google had "paid links" to Websites containing child pornography.
Toback said he dropped the lawsuit because "Google has offered to sitdown and discuss the issues." Google spokesman Steve Langdon said the MountainView, Calif.-based company was "pleased that the suit has been dismissedand believe it was completely without merit."
A formal notice ending the suit was filed Wednesday.
Toback, who has sponsored local legislation raising the age that teenagerscan legally buy cigarettes to 19 and limiting teens' access to tanning salons,said last month that he filed the lawsuit because oversight of Google wasbeyond the purview of county legislators.

23/06/2006 - Torrentspy names alleged MPAA hacker - A month after accusing the Motion Picture Association of America of conspiring to commit data theft, the operators of a file search engine presented more details regarding the alleged relationship between the MPAA and a man who admits hacking the small company's network.
Valence Media, the parent company of Torrentspy.com, charges that the MPAA paid the Canadian resident $15,000 for information on Torrentspy and its executives, according to documents filed Thursday with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles.
"I contacted (the MPAA) and offered to provide it information regarding (Torrentspy.com founder) Justin Bunnell and Torrentspy," according to a signed statement by Robert Anderson, the man identified elsewhere in the filing as a "hacker."
Among the claims by Valence Media is that as part of its attempt to gather information on Torrentspy, the MPAA hired private investigators to comb the trash cans of Torrentspy executives. Valence Media obtained this information from Anderson, who for undisclosed reasons has agreed to help the company against the Hollywood industry group, according to copy of the suit. Valence Media has asked a judge to order the MPAA to turn over the information taken by Anderson and to identify anyone that the association may have shared it with.
An MPAA spokeswoman did not immediately return phone calls, but the association issued a broad denial to Torrentspy's initial charges.

week that affects Microsoft Office users.
The issue relates to the ability to load ActiveX controls in an Office
document and is not a vulnerability but an Office feature, a Microsoft
representative said. "This behavior is by design and by itself does not
represent a security risk to customers," he said.
The ActiveX issue is the third security problem related to Office to
surface within in a week. On Tuesday, Microsoft confirmed that a flaw related to a Windows component called "hlink.dll" could be exploited by crafting a malicious Excel file. Late last week, Microsoft said a flaw in Excel was being exploited in at least one targeted cyberattack. The company has said it is working on a patch for the first new Excel flaw.

Neophiliacs, it seems, are people who are addicted to the new. "Some folks have an almost unstoppable draw to every whizzy new electronic gizmo. Or maybe they just have to have the latest combination of strappy sandals and hip-hugging jeans," reports Media Life magazine.
The report explains new research from the Yamagata University School of Medicine in Japan. This research suggests that some people may actually be more genetically predisposed to wanting the newest things. It all comes down to a mitochondrial enzyme called monoamine oxidase A, the report explains. Those who produce the enzyme in high quantities are likely to be gadget-addicts, the researchers claim.
But University of York professor of sociology Colin Campbell disagrees with the analysis, pointing out that people were far more suspicious of change in the past. He suggests that it's a sociological reaction, not a genetic one. "If people were to lose interest in the novel, our economy would crash immediately," he says. "We have developed a civilization that is dependent on it. That's the situation we are in, for good or ill."

'The model sent into us for review by HIS is their "Turbo" edition which means you can overclock the card if you need some extra FPS. While not as impressive as other cards we have received from HIS in the past, you are able to boost the clock speed by 20MHz to 520MHz although the memory clock speeds stays the same, 500MHz (or 1GHz DDR). It does seem like the Radeon X1800GTO is already pretty maxed out as far as clock speeds go so don't expect too much when it comes to overclocking.'

23/06/2006 - NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT: Value-conscious gamers best bet? - The GeForce 7900 GT is one of NVIDIA's latest entries in the high-end gaming market. Utilizing the revamped G71 architecture, this chip shares similar specifications to the almighty GeForce 7800 GTX, while being manufactured in a smaller micron process which translates in lower manufacturing costs, less heat produces and potential for higher clock frequencies.
Just like the much more expensive 7900 GTX version, the 7900 GT features 24 pixel shaders, 8 vertex shaders, and 16 ROPs using the same 256-bit memory interface. Normally I would refer to products such as the 7900 GT as cut down versions, though this time round that's not really the case.
With all its shaders and ROPs intact the 7900 GT is in essence a GTX, if you were able to overclock it far enough. The GeForce 7900 GT is slightly faster than the 256MB 7800 GTX and in many cases as fast as the Radeon X1800XT. We are also throwing a last generation Radeon X1900GT card to see how that goes considering those two competing chips are evenly priced on the market now. The question remains however, what is gamers' best bet in this price range?
