23/06/2006 - Skype Offers US Free International Calls - Skype has stepped up its efforts to break into the competitive US VoIP consumer market with the promise of free international calls. The company today offered its US-based users one hour of free international calling to landline phones in 30 countries. Under the terms of the offer, which runs until 30 June, US Skype users signing up to the firm's SkypeOut service will be offered 60 minutes of free calls to landlines in Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico and the UK among others.
The offer comes one month after Skype announced that customers in the US and Canada can make free SkypeOut calls to any landline or mobile phones in the two countries until the end of the year. Skype users in both countries were previously required to pay for Skype calls from their PCs to traditional telephones.

Digg is a personal favorite of mine and I'm sure a favorite of the majority of people here on Neowin. 22/06/2006 - AMD's New Processor Micro-Architecture in 2008 - Advanced Micro Devices' chief executive said that his company was planning to commercially release processors with new micro-architecture in 2008 after making pilot production in 2007. The introduction of the new micro-architecture may significantly boost performance of the company's microprocessors, which are to face increased pressure from competing solutions by Intel Corp.
"We're going to introduce a really new architecture that will work well with our partners for the best performance. We're going to start sampling it at the end of 2007 and roll it out in 2008," said Hector Ruiz, chief executive of AMD, in an interview with BusinessWeek.
Earlier it was projected that in 2007 the Sunnyvale, California-based chipmaker will introduce instruction extensions to the AMD64 micro-architecture and will bring-in HyperTransport technology in 2008. But recently the company said in a statement that AMD's "next-generation architecture for servers, workstations and desktops" is planned to debut in mid-2007, and is expected to offer better platform performance-per-watt ratio as well as enterprise application performance.

The unit also features a whopping terabyte of hard disk storage - sufficient for three hours' HD content, the company said. The RD-A1 goes on sale in Japan on 14 July. It's got digital terrestrial and satellite tuners, along with an analogue tuner for back-up and a wide array of digital and analogue video and audio inputs and outputs, including HDMI.

22/06/2006 - Utility Nukes Windows Genuine Advantage Callbacks - A private security company has found a way to nuke the controversial callback component in Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy tool. Firewall Leak Tester, a company that provides tools to test the quality of personal firewall software, has released a utility called RemoveWGA that blocks Microsoft from "phoning home" from Windows PCs on a daily basis.
"Once the WGA Notification tool has checked your OS and has confirmed you had a legit copy, there is no decent point or reason to check it again and again every boot," the company said in a note explaining its motive for releasing the tool. The WGA tool, which is a mandatory part of the Redmond, Wash., software maker's battle to curb Windows piracy, includes two separate components: WGA validation and WGA notifications. Validation determines whether the copy of Windows installed is pirated or not, and Notifications is set up to nag users whom Microsoft believes are not running "genuine Windows" and "suggest" where they can "learn more about the benefits of using genuine Windows software."

22/06/2006 - MySpace to Increase Security for Young Users - In light of recent security concerns and a lawsuit, the popular social networking site, MySpace, announced it would be increasing it's efforts to protect younger users. While MySpace already prevents children under the age of 14 from signing up, there has been a lot of pressure for them to do more in keeping predators away from children. Under the new plan, any user age 18 and over will not be able to send a friend request to another user who is younger than 18 years old without previously knowing the young member's full name or email address.
Many people continue to worry, however, because the system is far from being fool proof. Member's 18 and under can still freely send friend requests to their older counterparts. The new system can also easily be bypassed if one were to lie about their age and claim they are under the age of 18. Because of this, many feel the entire scheme is going to be relatively ineffective.
MySpace expects to have it's new protection measures fully in place and running sometime next week.

21/06/2006 - A Dazed Intel Shifts Into Comeback Mode - On Monday, Intel will release a server chip, code-named Woodcrest, that's part of a trio of processors debuting this summer that have emerged as one of the most important product launches in Intel's 28-year history. Like past Intel product releases, the new chips will lay the groundwork for a new generation of computers and generate sales for software developers and hardware makers. Hewlett-Packard, for instance, will come out with a wide range of servers based around Woodcrest, including one box that the company says will be the fastest two-processor server in its class. But more importantly, the chips will show whether Intel can regain its technological edge.
"(On) average, we are 40 percent-plus better than the competition in performance and a little bit better in power, and the combination is 1.5X in terms of power/performance," said Pat Gelsinger, general manager of the Intel enterprise group. "Customers are very enthusiastic about this platform. We expect to see a rapid take up."

21/06/2006 - ATI Readies Top-to-Bottom DirectX 10 Graphics Cores Lineup - ATI Technologies, a leading supplier of graphics processors and multimedia technologies, may be ready with the top-to-bottom lineup of DirectX 10-supporting graphics processor and a chipset with built-in DirectX 10 graphics core as early as by CeBIT 2007, according to sources close to the company.
It was earlier reported that ATI's first DirectX 10 graphics chip known under R600 code-named had been taped out, which means that development teams at ATI Technologies have several months to complete the designs of mainstream and entry-level graphics processors and then to built-in low-end graphics core into ATI's chipset code-named RS700. Theoretically, sources indicated, ATI may be able to demonstrate not only the family of DirectX 10 discrete chips at CeBIT 2007, but also the integrated part, although, the latter should be actually available towards middle of the year.
Back in 2005 ATI released its top-to-bottom family of DirectX 10 shader model 3.0 chips in October. But that happened due to the fact that the company failed to launch the Radeon X1800 (R520) on time in May 2005, six month after the initial tape-out due to failures with the design, which resulted in lower-than-expected yield at high speeds.
