20/06/2006 - Apple Releases Shake 4.1 Universal at Massive Price Cut - Apple has released Shake 4.1 and dramatically discounted the product's price: from £1,999 to £329 (including VAT). It's the first Universal version of the compositing software which lets Final Cut Studio editors create sophisticated 3D compositing, keying, image tracking and stabilisation effects.
This update is only for Mac versions of the Shake software. The price drop also appears to only be relevant to Mac users and not Linux users of the software. Shake continues to be the tool of choice for major motion-picture studios and leading effects houses to create award-winning visual effects including this year's Oscar winner, King Kong, Apple points out.
"At just $499, Shake is now priced as low as a plug-in for Final Cut Studio," said Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of applications product marketing. "Now Final Cut Studio customers can retouch their shots with Shake's optical flow technology or add photo realistic visual effects to their productions, even on a shoestring budget."
Shake 4.1 offers a range of operations from simple re-touching to complex 3D compositing. Launched directly from the Final Cut Pro timeline, Shake uses optical flow image analysis to re-time, track and stabilise shots with precision. Particle effects from Motion 2 can be dropped directly into the Shake process tree to add elements such as smoke, sparkles and fire to 3D composites.
Shake 4.1 delivers significant performance gains on the new Intel-based Macs, Apple claims. Performance tests on a MacBook Pro have shown that common tasks such as colour correction, warping and the application of filters are processed up to 3.5 times faster on a MacBook Pro than on a PowerBook G4.
Shake 4.1 is now available through the Apple Store.

20/06/2006 - Researchers Say New Chip Breaks Speed Record - IBM and the Georgia Institute of Technology announced today that their researchers have demonstrated the first silicon-based chip capable of operating at frequencies above 500 GHz -- 500 billion cycles per second -- by cryogenically “freezing” the chip to 451 degrees below zero Fahrenheit (4.5 Kelvins). Such extremely cold temperatures are found naturally only in outer space, but can be artificially achieved on Earth using ultra-cold materials such as liquid helium. (Absolute Zero, the coldest possible temperature in nature, occurs at minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit).
By comparison, 500 GHz is more than 250 times faster than today's cell phones, which typically operate at approximately 2 GHz. Computer simulations suggest that the silicon-germanium (SiGe) technology used in the chip could ultimately support even higher (near-TeraHertz – 1,000 GHz) operational frequencies even at room temperature.

20/06/2006 - Microsoft to embed Live services in Windows - Microsoft's Live-branded online services don't end at the Web browser. They extend deep into Windows. The company last week quietly showed off software for embedding its Web-based Windows Live ID authentication services within Windows applications. Windows Live ID is the successor to Microsoft Passport, a hosted service for verifying a person's name and password for logging onto Web servers.
Later this year, Microsoft will release a beta version of a software developer's kit (SDK) for making the Windows Live ID service function within a Windows application, said Lynn Ayres, program manager on the Windows Live ID team. Right now, Windows Live ID authentication services are designed to work with Microsoft's Web-based applications such as Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Messenger. With the developer's kit, called Windows Live ID Client SDK, Microsoft is seeking to create closer integration between its Web-based hosted services and "rich client" Windows applications, Ayres said.

20/06/2006 - Can Ultra Mobile PCs Live Up to the Hype? - Feedback from customers who have bought Samsung Electronics' Q1 device suggests that a pre-launch teaser campaign by Microsoft might have backfired, a Samsung executive said today. The Q1 went on sale in the U.S. in May and is based on Microsoft's Origami platform. Microsoft collaborated with Intel to create Origami, which combines a tablet edition of Windows XP with a pen-based tablet computer similar in specification to a laptop computer.
"Feedback has been quite mixed," said David Steel, vice president of marketing for Samsung's digital media business, in a briefing with reporters at the company's headquarters in Suwon, south of Seoul. A positive or negative response is generally related to how much of the pre-launch Origami hype the person had been exposed to, Steel said.

19/06/2006 - Apple Movie Download Service by 2007? - Apple is negotiating with movie studios to make films available as downloads through iTunes. The company is attempting to convince the studios to allow it to sell films at $9.99 each. Studios are pushing back, according to a report in Variety: they want to be able to charge a series of tiered prices, just like they do in the offline world.
Apple may face some resistance in forcing studios to agree a one-fixed-price deal. Former Sony Music chief technology officer Phil Wiser recalls that when Jobs was attempting to negotiate permission for the iTunes Music Store he approached labels with a "take it or leave it" proposition. Movie industry moguls are also wary of giving to much control to iTunes, which has already managed to convince music label bosses to remain with the service despite offering songs at a fixed 99-cent-per-track price.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is attempting to use the huge presence he now has in Hollywood as a result of the Pixar/Disney merger to kick-start these negotiations. "He came in with a lot of bravado and said: 'We set our mind to what we were going to do in the music business and revolutionised it, and now we want to do the same thing with film," one studio person close to the talks for movie downloads told Variety.
The report suggests movie downloads are likely to debut (at least in the US) "by 2007".

19/06/2006 - China Cost Film Industry ‘$2.7bn’ Last Year - According to a global movie body, movie piracy in China is costing the industry $2.7bn a year. The Motion Pictures Association say that around 93% of all films bought in China are pirated, and 40% of the losses are accountable to people downloading movies from illegal online sources.
The report suggests that the Chinese film industry was most affected, losing $1.5bn to piracy, while major US film studios accumulated losses of $565m to piracy. "In terms of who's losing the most here in China, it's not the MPA's member companies, it's the local industry," MPA Asia Pacific head Mike Ellis said when speaking to the BBC.
