19/06/2006 - Apple Movie Download Service by 2007? - Apple is negotiating with movie studios to make films available as downloads through iTunes. The company is attempting to convince the studios to allow it to sell films at $9.99 each. Studios are pushing back, according to a report in Variety: they want to be able to charge a series of tiered prices, just like they do in the offline world.

Apple may face some resistance in forcing studios to agree a one-fixed-price deal. Former Sony Music chief technology officer Phil Wiser recalls that when Jobs was attempting to negotiate permission for the iTunes Music Store he approached labels with a "take it or leave it" proposition. Movie industry moguls are also wary of giving to much control to iTunes, which has already managed to convince music label bosses to remain with the service despite offering songs at a fixed 99-cent-per-track price.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is attempting to use the huge presence he now has in Hollywood as a result of the Pixar/Disney merger to kick-start these negotiations. "He came in with a lot of bravado and said: 'We set our mind to what we were going to do in the music business and revolutionised it, and now we want to do the same thing with film," one studio person close to the talks for movie downloads told Variety.

The report suggests movie downloads are likely to debut (at least in the US) "by 2007".

19/06/2006 - China Cost Film Industry ?$2.7bn? Last Year - According to a global movie body, movie piracy in China is costing the industry $2.7bn a year. The Motion Pictures Association say that around 93% of all films bought in China are pirated, and 40% of the losses are accountable to people downloading movies from illegal online sources.

The report suggests that the Chinese film industry was most affected, losing $1.5bn to piracy, while major US film studios accumulated losses of $565m to piracy. "In terms of who's losing the most here in China, it's not the MPA's member companies, it's the local industry," MPA Asia Pacific head Mike Ellis said when speaking to the BBC.

19/06/2006 - Paypal Fixes Fatal Flaw - Updating a previous story, Paypal has found and fixed the URL which was re-directing traffic to a server in Korea, which is also in the process of shutting down that server.

Online transaction outfit, PayPal has found a phony URL on its site that was being used by fraudsters to steal credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to PayPal users. The issue was publicised by Netcraft, and PayPal swiftly fixed it. However it is unclear how many people lost personal details because of it.

The scam involved tricking users into accessing a URL hosted on the real PayPal web site. This URL used SSL to encrypt information transmitted to and from the site, and a valid 256-bit SSL certificate was presented to confirm that the site does indeed belong to PayPal. But the content on the page was been modified by the fraudsters via a cross-site scripting technique (XSS).

18/06/2006 - Bill Gates' e-mail to employees - Bink has posted an email that Bill Gates sent out to all Microsoft employees and Subsidiaries.

From: MSBILLG
Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2006 1:41 PM
To: Microsoft and Subsidiaries: All FTE
Subject: My Transition Plans

I wanted to take a moment to share some of my thoughts, as well.

As Steve's mail indicates, I've decided that two years from now, in July 2008, I want to devote more time to the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Right now and for the next two years, my full-time job is here at Microsoft, and my part-time job remains the Foundation. Beginning in July 2008, I will switch that, to be full-time at the Foundation, while remaining involved with Microsoft as Chairman and an advisor on key development projects on a part-time basis.

To prepare for this change, we have a well-thought-out transition process. Again, I will continue at Microsoft full-time for the next two years, but over the course of those two years, my day-to-day responsibilities will shift to a team of incredible technical leaders who are already doing amazing things at the company.

I feel very lucky that we've got extraordinary technical leaders at the company, like Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie, who can step up to assume the roles that I've played. I've known Ray for the last 20 years, and he has created some of the most important developments in the industry. Craig and I have worked together for nearly 14 years, and he's been a technical visionary and a leader on policy throughout his career. With Ray and Craig stepping up, I feel very confident that the technical stewardship of Microsoft is in very capable hands.

18/06/2006 - Microsoft Takes Aim at ITunes - Microsoft is said to be planning a rival to Apple's phenomenally successful iPod music player and iTunes music service. Sources close to the discussions claimed that Microsoft has already demonstrated a device that plays music and video, and has held licensing talks with the music industry to form its own music service, according to a report from Reuters.

Microsoft is remaining tight-lipped about the developments, and has not mentioned a possible launch date. The software giant already provides the copyright framework for some worldwide subscription music services, none of which has been able to shake Apple's domination of the market.
