18/06/2006 - Mac OS X 10.4.7 To Deliver Audio Fixes and More - Specifically, people who claim to have tested the latest pre-release builds of Mac OS X 10.4.7 say the update will offer fixes for audio playback in iTunes, Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack and QuickTime. It will also improve Bluetooth file transfers, mobile phone synching and mouse pairings, these people have said.
The update has been under development at Apple for a couple months and saw its latest seedings on Thursday in the form of Mac OS X 10.4.7 build 8J2133 (Intel) and Mac OS X 10.4.7 build 8J133 (Power PC). In Delta update form -- the bare bones install requiring Mac OS X 10.4.6 -- the updates are said to weigh in at a hefty 130MB and 64MB, respectively.
Testers have also disclosed that Apple has implemented fixes into the release for saving Adobe and Quark documents to AFP mounted volumes, syncing files and other data to .Mac, and using iChat to create chat rooms over the AIM protocol.

18/06/2006 - Vista Premium Requirements Detailed - Microsoft has detailed specifications related to Vista Basic and Premium this week, stating that in order for a PC to be "Vista Ready", all requirements must be met.
"To qualify for a basic system logo, the devices of a basic system that includes embedded or add-in devices must comply with the basic requirements (if a logo program exists for the device categories)," Microsoft explained.
"Likewise, to qualify for a premium system logo, the devices of a premium system that includes embedded or add-in devices must comply with the premium requirements for the device category."
Those wishing to qualify now for the program must meet the following standards effective immediately: high-definition audio and DirectX 3D 9 support, one or more digital outputs for video adapters, Ethernet and/or Wi-Fi support, USB 2.0 support, and system resume times of two seconds or less from the "standby" state.

I wanted to take a moment to share some of my thoughts, as well.
As Steve's mail indicates, I've decided that two years from now, in July 2008, I want to devote more time to the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Right now and for the next two years, my full-time job is here at Microsoft, and my part-time job remains the Foundation. Beginning in July 2008, I will switch that, to be full-time at the Foundation, while remaining involved with Microsoft as Chairman and an advisor on key development projects on a part-time basis.
To prepare for this change, we have a well-thought-out transition process. Again, I will continue at Microsoft full-time for the next two years, but over the course of those two years, my day-to-day responsibilities will shift to a team of incredible technical leaders who are already doing amazing things at the company.
I feel very lucky that we've got extraordinary technical leaders at the company, like Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie, who can step up to assume the roles that I've played. I've known Ray for the last 20 years, and he has created some of the most important developments in the industry. Craig and I have worked together for nearly 14 years, and he's been a technical visionary and a leader on policy throughout his career. With Ray and Craig stepping up, I feel very confident that the technical stewardship of Microsoft is in very capable hands.

18/06/2006 - Last Week on Neowin (Week ending June 18th) - This week saw Neowin updating its design layout to Public Preview 5. Almost everyone appears to have welcomed the changes, we know theres a way to go yet before all the features are completed. Look out for another release soon.
Jumping right to the end of the week, yesterday also saw the re-launch of our very own podcast rebranded NeowinCast due to a dispute over an existing podcast that was already being used for the NeoCast branding. The panel (lardiop, LOC, bangbang023, and shanepitman) cover a few recent news items including: Vista BETA 2 biggest download event in history, Microsoft cuts PC to PC synching from Vista, WGA phones home and much more.
In news we reported that not only the voice of Microsoft, Robert Scoble was quitting but also Bill Gates is taking a back seat, we covered this with 2 reports, one of which includes a cast from Mr G himself.
In hardware news we reported on Apples iPod slave factories, Intels new Xeon core codenamed Woodcrest and AMD's announcement on major price drop on it's current CPU line after the July 23rd release of IntelÂ’s Core 2 Duo Conroe processors. In software news we covered Windows getting it's largest security update in over a year, thats 12 patches for Patch Tuesday. Windows Vista Beta 2 became available on an official torrent and was cited as the largest download in history. Although some would say that it was the largest download in Microsofts' history. The RIAA did not escape this weeks news either, claiming that music piracy is contained but then also banned people from dancing to music videos on YouTube.

18/06/2006 - Microsoft Takes Aim at ITunes - Microsoft is said to be planning a rival to Apple's phenomenally successful iPod music player and iTunes music service. Sources close to the discussions claimed that Microsoft has already demonstrated a device that plays music and video, and has held licensing talks with the music industry to form its own music service, according to a report from Reuters.
Microsoft is remaining tight-lipped about the developments, and has not mentioned a possible launch date. The software giant already provides the copyright framework for some worldwide subscription music services, none of which has been able to shake Apple's domination of the market.

18/06/2006 - The un-Google - “THE Google brand has taken on a life of its own,” concedes Jim Lanzone, the boss of Ask.com, the fourth-largest but fastest-growing search engine, and this simultaneously frustrates and delights him. It frustrates him because people say they “google” things even when they go to Ask or other engines to search the web; because Google is considered, for no good reason (in his opinion), “the safe choice under pressure”; and because many people “don't seem to want choice” and stick to Google out of mere inertia.
But it delights him, because Google, having made many enemies, must now fight many battles; and because Google, perhaps out of hubris, appears to be getting distracted. This month, for instance, Google unveiled a free online spreadsheet program, which, like many Google products, has little to do with web search and is meant to needle Microsoft, the world's largest software company, which has a near-monopoly on spreadsheets through Excel. Google, in other words, has impressive momentum, says Mr Lanzone, but a good martial-artist can use his opponent's momentum to overcome him, so “we're using search aikido.”
In terms of momentum—mass times velocity—Google's lead indeed looks daunting. It has by far the most mass, with an American market share of 43% as of April, which reaches 50% counting AOL, an internet property that uses Google's search technology. This compares with 28% for Yahoo!; 13% for MSN, which belongs to Microsoft; and 6% for Ask, which is owned by IAC/Interactive Corp, a conglomerate of about 60 online media brands. Google also has velocity: its market share grew by 17% in the four quarters to this spring, whereas Yahoo! and MSN both lost share. Only Ask has more velocity—its share grew by 35%—but then again it has little mass.

18/06/2006 - PayPal Security Flaw allows Identity Theft - A security flaw in the PayPal web site is being actively exploited by fraudsters to steal credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to PayPal users. The issue was reported to Netcraft today via our anti-phishing toolbar.
The scam works quite convincingly, by tricking users into accessing a URL hosted on the genuine PayPal web site. The URL uses SSL to encrypt information transmitted to and from the site, and a valid 256-bit SSL certificate is presented to confirm that the site does indeed belong to PayPal; however, some of the content on the page has been modified by the fraudsters via a cross-site scripting technique (XSS).
When the victim visits the page, they are presented with a message that has been 'injected' onto the genuine PayPal site that says, "Your account is currently disabled because we think it has been accessed by a third party. You will now be redirected to Resolution Center." After a short pause, the victim is then redirected to an external server, which presents a fake PayPal Member log-In page. At this crucial point, the victim may be off guard, as the paypal.com domain name and SSL certificate he saw previously are likely to make him realise he has visited the genuine PayPal web site – and why would he expect PayPal to redirect him to a fraudulent web site?

18/06/2006 - Adobe Demonstrates CS3 on MacBook Pro - Adobe's InDesign product manager Chad Siegel visited London this month to show a selection of new InDesign features to Macworld UK. Using a MacBook Pro, Siegel offered a glimpse at a number of time-saving features that focus on designers, but stressed these to be no more than a small selection of some of the features the company is working on.
"We're investing in workflow," he explained, promising better integration between all the products to be shipped within Creative Suite 3. He even shows some of the powerful image import and editing features that will be made available within the next iteration of Photoshop.
There's still work to do, the demonstration confirmed, as the MacBook Pro crashed while being used for this - but the work is taking place.
