16/06/2006 - Extremely Critical Flaw Discovered In Excel - Microsoft have today admitted that they have received reports of a brand new vulnerability affecting all versions of Microsoft Excel.
Mike Reavey (security program manager) posted to the companys blog today explaining that users need to download and run a specially crafted Excel document in order for the attack to take place.
Secunia have rated the vulnerability as "Extremely Critical" which is their highest rating as 0day code is out in the wild and the vulnerability is being actively exploited.
Symantec are already reporting a trojan that drops malware onto machines using the undocumented vulnerability.

- Sign in to http://login.live.com with your passport that you just registered.

- Edit your registered information, input your birthday (18+) and change your Country/Region to 'United States'.
- Paste https://account.live.com/LoginChangeName.aspx to address bar, then your can change your passport to @live.com.

16/06/2006 - Apple May Drop iSight, Airport Base Station and eMac in UK - Apple will stop selling Airport Base Stations, eMacs and iSight cameras in Europe after June 30, reports claim. According to reports, the company contacted channel partners this morning to confirm plans to withdraw these products.
If the sources are correct, the cessation of sales of the three products is to ensure that the company complies with new European Union environmental regulation - the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2005 (RoHS).
These new regulations come into force on July 1, and are designed to minimise the impacts of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment during their life times and when they become waste. Among other statutes, the new laws will limit or prevent the sale of CRT-based technologies, such as the eMac, some claim. The move lends some weight to a recent Apple Insider report that claimed a new eMac featuring an LCD screen to be in development.
Producers must be able to demonstrate compliance by submitting technical or other information to the enforcing authority on request. They must retain such documentation for four years. In the UK, the Secretary of State has the duty of enforcing RoHS Regulations. The enforcement powers include a power to serve a compliance notice and make test purchases. Any person who fails to comply with the requirements of the Regulations will be guilty of an offence.
Apple is not the only manufacturer to be affected by the new laws. Other electronic good makers are expected to make similar announcements and remove certain products from their range in the coming weeks.
ItÂ’s believed manufacturers of electrical devices will also have to establish systems to safely dispose of legacy products as they reach the end of their useful life, but no more is known on this at this time.

Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates plans to move away from his day-to-day duties by July 2008, analysts said change is in the air for the company. That's because Gates has for so long played such a major role at the company he founded in 1975 that any transformation in his role is bound to have an effect, said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group in San Jose.
"Microsoft is so much Bill Gates in terms of corporate personality," Enderle said. "You will see that starting to change [because] he represented such a big footprint. Â…You can't help but see some level of change. I don't think there is anyone who can replace Gates. He is larger than life."

Bill Gates has announced that he will stepping down as Microsoft's chief software architect in another two years (July 2008), though he plans to continue as chairman "indefinitely" -- assuming the board of directors keeps electing him. 16/06/2006 - Microsoft Issues Reminder For End Of Windows XP SP1 Support - Microsoft reminded solution providers and end users Wednesday that support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) will end Oct. 10. Customers running Windows XP SP1 must migrate to Windows XP SP2 over the next three months, or they will lose incident support. Microsoft also said it won't release any more security updates for SP1 after that date.
During its monthly security briefing, Microsoft executives told customers to prepare their migrations over the summer. "I urge all customers to have plans ready for moving to XP SP2 as soon as possible," said Stephen Toulouse, a security product manager at Microsoft. The original support end date for Windows XP SP1 was Sept. 17, 2006.

I'm certainly impressed with this update and expect it will only get better here on out.

16/06/2006 - The RIAA Says No Dancing To Music On YouTube - We already know that the entertainment industry loves to try to get people to pay for every possible use of their content. Remember the filmmaker who almost couldn't release his documentary because there was a four and a half second clip of The Simpsons playing in the background in one scene? It seems that with the rise of user-generated video, a lot more people are learning about the fun of licensing rights. The RIAA is apparently sending out cease-and-desist letters to YouTube users who dare to put up videos of things such as themselves dancing to music they haven't licensed.
It's difficult to see how the RIAA can make a credible claim of "losses" in this case. Clearly, some kids videotaping themselves bopping along to some song aren't going to pay a license fee -- and these sorts of viral videos tend to help build up more interest in artists. So what good does it do to go after these videos?

You can now customize your different pages with uniquely colored Flair headers, to differentiate your types of content.
Microsoft Windows Live is a free service that allows you to personalize your start page content and search directly from it. It is still marked as Beta and currently has no ads or subscription offerings However, this will most likely change when it comes out of Beta.

16/06/2006 - CnetTV Beta - A fresh feel to Flash based Internet TV - Flash video isnÂ’t new to the internet, YouTube and Google video brought it to the masses and many people spend hours watching the content.
CnetTV have launched their Flash video service with their own content to make viewing of their videos a better experience.
The interface is very clean and easy to use, they have custom play lists and a custom channel which you can set to populate with videos you are interested in, but the most compelling part for me is the video quality/ Flash video has never been very impressive in the past, usually its blocky, very poor resolution and generally low quality, but not here, the videos are crisp and a reasonable resolution for watching on your PC.
