15/06/2006 - Inside Microsoft's new Driver Quality Rating system - It has long been said that one of Microsoft's greatest challenges has been to support the wild and unpredictable PC hardware market, stemming from the fact that unlike Apple, Microsoft has little control over the hardware that its OS comes to reside upon. True or not, one thing is certain: a bad driver can turn an otherwise stable system into a nightmare. To help put an end to this, Microsoft is turning to a Driver Quality Rating (DQR) system that it hopes will motivate both OEMs and device manufacturers to increase their commitments to driver quality.

The DQR system relies on scores to indicate a driver's quality level, and it derives those scores from user-submitted crash reports. Microsoft's Online Crash Analysis Team will analyze crash reports to determine the ratio of crashing systems to non-crashing systems. Drivers that rarely cause crashes will be rated "Green," while moderately problematic drivers will be rated "Yellow." The horrid stuff gets a big, fat "Red" rating. (Microsoft has not revealed the exact methodology for determining these scores, only that "Green" maps to 7-9 points, "Yellow" 4-6, and "Red" 1-3.)

15/06/2006 - Windows, Mac OS to run side-by-side - Parallels, a start-up whose software enables Macs to run Microsoft Windows and the Mac OS at the same time, says it is ready with a final version of its product.

Apple Computer made headlines back in April when it said it would offer its own software--Boot Camp--for loading Windows onto Macs. However, Boot Camp permits people to run only one operating system at a time, meaning either Windows or the Mac OS can be in use, but not both at once.

Around the same time, Parallels started testing for its Parallels Desktop program, which uses virtualization technology to have Windows programs operate alongside Mac applications. The Windows programs open in a separate window within the Mac OS.

Unlike past software that allowed Windows programs to run on a Mac, Parallels Desktop does not need to emulate the hardware that's inside a PC. That's because Macs and PCs now use the same Intel-based chips. As a result, the speed of Parallels is far better than past efforts at bringing together the two operating systems, the software start-up said. In fact, Parallels says Windows programs can run nearly as fast through its virtualization as running natively on a Windows PC.

15/06/2006 - Attack code comes on heels of Microsoft patches - Just a day after Microsoft released patches for vulnerabilities in some of its software, code designed to take advantage of those weaknesses appeared on the Internet. Most of the patches that Microsoft issued were for flaws that were widely known.

But at least two flaws were made public for the first time on Tuesday as part of the company's monthly security update. Security firms reported finding the code in Wednesday. The exploit code for previously unknown flaws means hackers could use the code to pounce on computer systems where managers are slow to apply patches.

"Microsoft is aware that detailed exploit code was published on the Internet for some of the vulnerabilities," the software maker said in a statement. "With the exception of MS06-027 (the Word malware that began circulating last month), Microsoft is not currently aware of any active attacks utilizing this exploit code...the exploit code does not affect users who have installed all June security updates."

In all, Microsoft issued patches for 21 flaws in its security update, saying all but two of them could let an intruder run malicious code on a compromised computer. Some of the exploits that appear on the Web are for "critical" flaws in Windows Media Player and for "routing and remote access."

15/06/2006 - Longhorn Server Follows Earlier Windows Server 200x Naming - Naming a baby is always difficult, let alone a new operating system. Many of us have heard the litany of names which were bandied about for Windows Longhorn, and most guessed something along the lines of previous Windows: 95, 98, Me, XP, nice and simple. Just a two letter/number combination, or the year. Many had guessed Windows 2006 (or 7). Alas, this was not to be, as Windows 'Codename' Longhorn became what is now lovingly known as Windows Vista.

Aye, matey, but that's just the "client" -- the operating system most users know. There is also the server edition, which until now has still been called Longhorn Server. Conventional wisdom said that Microsoft would simply keep this name, thereby keeping the "Longhorn" bloodline alive. But alas, there will be no "Longhorn" heir to the throne.

It was announced today at TechED 2006 that Longhorn Server would retain the year naming convention, that is, Windows Server 200x. This would place it in the footsteps of Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003. Depending on when it makes its way out the door, that would be Windows Server 2007 or Windows Server 2008.

Longhorn Server Beta 2 was released to WinHEC attendees in May, concurrent with Windows Vista Beta 2. But although Windows Vista Beta 2 has now been released to the public through the CPP (Customer Preview Program), Longhorn Server Beta 2 is still only available to the tester community. However, sometime early next year a Beta 3 will be distributed to the public.

15/06/2006 - Microsoft puts a cap on Vista beta downloads - Microsoft has defended its decision to cut back on the amount of users who can download the beta version of Windows Vista. The software giant claimed that the pre-release versions of Vista are not appropriate for use by a broad, non-technical audience. "As such, we want to limit the availability of the code to a technical audience, while also keeping the program manageable from a logistical standpoint," said Microsoft spokesman Richard Saunders.

According to an official Microsoft blog post, the Windows Vista beta was originally restricted because of fears that the huge downloads could cripple the internet. However, the company now claims that the cap on the number of downloads is designed to help it manage the beta test. "Our goal, especially at this point in the development process, is to make the feedback process as efficient as possible, and we are confident that we will get a high level of quality feedback regardless of the cap," said Saunders.

15/06/2006 - Dell to Offer AMD Desktop by September - While Dell and AMD started their partnership a while back when Dell announced it would release multiprocessor servers with AMD's Opteron chip inside, new reports state that Dell may extend their AMD support to include desktop computers by September of this year. Glen Young, an analyst for Citigroup Investment Research, states that while configuration options are not yet known, the AMD offering from Dell is definitely going to happen. He also believes that it is this very deal that made AMD confident enough to guarantee an increase in market share by the end of the year.

While this is good news for AMD and Dell, Yeung does advise that Dell's profits could be hurt this year by continued weak sales in the PC world and price cuts designed to attract more customers.

14/06/2006 - Apple Investigate iPod "Slave" Factories - Apple have launched an investigation after British newspaper The Mail on Sunday claimed that some of its Chinese iPod factories force employees to work long hours in squalid conditions.

Steve Jobs' now prestigious brand has said it will not tolerate its supplier code-of-conduct being broken, and vowed to fully investigate the claims. The Mail's article accused the factories of enforcing 15-hour shifts and paying as little as £27 (around US$50) per month.

The worst factories alledgedly house and employ 100 people per dormitory and ban outsiders. Another, said to specialise in production of the iPod Shuffle pays only £54 (around US$100) per month with half of that earned spent on accomodation and food within the complex.

A brief glance at Apple's own supplier code-of-conduct reveals that the company are indeed very concerned about the rights of their labourers, but is this enough? Apple say 60 hours of work per-week is the maximum expected, yet this still adds up to 10-a-day based on the allowed 6 day working week.

Despite human rights and health and safety precautions the document does not specify a minimum wage for the workers.

Apple have reacted to the claims, and are investigating but surely it is entirely down to Apple to ensure that the measures they put in place are not breached in the first place. Until the investigation is complete, it is still unknown whether the paper's claims were true or not.

"Forget what you thought you knew about hybrid technology. Intel now delivers the best of both worlds: high performance and energy efficiency without compromise," the invitation reads.

While the company has not yet confirmed that it will be launching the Xeon 5100 (Woodcrest core) during that even, sources have told TG Daily that the processor will be introduced in six different versions, ranging 1.6 to 3.0 GHz and carrying FSB1066 and FSB1333.
