14/06/2006 - Apple Investigate iPod "Slave" Factories - Apple have launched an investigation after British newspaper The Mail on Sunday claimed that some of its Chinese iPod factories force employees to work long hours in squalid conditions.

Steve Jobs' now prestigious brand has said it will not tolerate its supplier code-of-conduct being broken, and vowed to fully investigate the claims. The Mail's article accused the factories of enforcing 15-hour shifts and paying as little as £27 (around US$50) per month.

The worst factories alledgedly house and employ 100 people per dormitory and ban outsiders. Another, said to specialise in production of the iPod Shuffle pays only £54 (around US$100) per month with half of that earned spent on accomodation and food within the complex.

A brief glance at Apple's own supplier code-of-conduct reveals that the company are indeed very concerned about the rights of their labourers, but is this enough? Apple say 60 hours of work per-week is the maximum expected, yet this still adds up to 10-a-day based on the allowed 6 day working week.

Despite human rights and health and safety precautions the document does not specify a minimum wage for the workers.

Apple have reacted to the claims, and are investigating but surely it is entirely down to Apple to ensure that the measures they put in place are not breached in the first place. Until the investigation is complete, it is still unknown whether the paper's claims were true or not.

14/06/2006 - New Xeon 'Woodcrest' Core on June 26 - Consider it official. Intel will be officially introducing the Xeon 5100 processor, the first version of a new generation of CPU's built on the firm's "Core" micro architecture on 26 June.

The company is currently notifying analysts and journalists about an event to be held in San Francisco that date, where the company plans to announce "game-changing news about its server business and products..."

"Forget what you thought you knew about hybrid technology. Intel now delivers the best of both worlds: high performance and energy efficiency without compromise," the invitation reads.

While the company has not yet confirmed that it will be launching the Xeon 5100 (Woodcrest core) during that even, sources have told TG Daily that the processor will be introduced in six different versions, ranging 1.6 to 3.0 GHz and carrying FSB1066 and FSB1333. All Woodcrest version will integrates 4 MB L2 cache.

Pricing ranges from $209 for the entry-level 5110 (1.6 GHz, FSB1066) to $851 for the high-end 5160 (3.0 GHZ, FSB1333).

The desktop version of the Xeon 5100, called Core 2 Duo E4000/E6000 series (Conroe) core is rumored to launch on 23 July. The mobile variant (Core 2 Duo T5000/T7000), which is the foundation for the Xeon 5100 and the Core 2 Duo E series, will follow in August or September.

14/06/2006 - Japanese Chip Makers Team up for 45nm - Toshiba Corp. and other Japanese chip makers on Tuesday scrapped a tentative plan to set up a microchip foundry but said they will standardize technology to make cutting-edge chips in a latest effort to join forces.

Toshiba, Fujitsu Ltd., NEC Electronics Corp. and Renesas Technology have agreed to set a technology standard for advanced chips with circuitry widths of 45-nanometres or finer, looking to possible mutual use and consolidation of their plants in the future.

Industry specialists have said Japanese chip makers need to join hands to regain competitiveness and better compete with larger rivals such as Intel Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Texas Instruments Inc.

Finer circuitry means the chip can be smaller while data can be processed faster. It also cuts production costs per chip.
But costs for development and production equipment have risen as technology moves to ever-more intricate circuitry, making it difficult for chip makers to shoulder the burden alone.

A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Most of the world's advanced semiconductor factories currently make chips with a circuitry width of 90 nanometers.

Following the announcement, Sony Corp., which is co-developing 45-nanometre chips with Toshiba and NEC Electronics, said the company will cooperate with the group of four chip makers.

14/06/2006 - RoboCup Kicks Off - Yes, all puns intended. Robots are already taking jobs, will they soon replace athletes? This is a fun idea regardless.
I can see it now, "All your footballs are belong to us."

A football tournament played by teams of robots has kicked off in Germany.

The 10th annual RoboCup, being held in Bremen, will see more than 400 teams of robots dribbling, tackling and shooting in an effort to become world champions.

Machines compete in 11 leagues including those designed for humanoid and four-legged robots.
The organizers of the tournament hope that in 2050 the winners of the RoboCup will be able to beat the human World Cup champions.

"RoboCup 2006 is the first step towards a vision," said Minoru Asada, president of the RoboCup Federation. "This vision includes the development of a humanoid robot team of eleven players, which can win against a human soccer world champion team."

14/06/2006 - Microsoft Gets Chatty With New Webcams - Microsoft today is expected to announce two videoconferencing Webcams that simplify online video chat and can create photo blog entries on Microsoft's MSN Spaces community site. The LifeCam VX-6000 and LifeCam VX-3000 Webcams initiate videoconferencing sessions in Windows Live Messenger instant messaging software with the press of a button, said Michael Cowan, a product marketing manager at Microsoft.

A Windows Live Call Button atop the Webcams automatically logs a user into Windows Live Messenger and opens a list of contacts currently online, called a "Buddy Pick" list. Clicking on a contact from the list starts a videoconference, Cowan said. "It is like speed dial. Just press a button."

14/06/2006 - Vista Sidebar showcases desktop/Web integration - Long Zheng has published some fantastic Windows Vista screencasts, which display the power of the Vista OS - released as a developer beta last week. The screencast that I was most interested in was the Sidebar. Similar in appearance and functionality to the Dashboard feature of Mac OS X Tiger, the Vista Sidebar allows users to manage their gadgets (Microsoft's term for widgets) and other content such as RSS feeds. The Sidebar can be easily shown or hidden on the Vista desktop, and individual gadgets given varying degrees of opacity. Gadgets can also be dragged and moved around the desktop.

As you probably know, gadgets are little customizable software apps that offer various bits of functionality - from a simple calculator to some of the more advanced apps that we're beginning to see nowadays (e.g. a Media Center programmer app). They are a feature of Microsoft's live.com platform, but will also be a key aspect of Vista. This shows the increasing integration of desktop functionality (Sidebar) with Web (live.com). Once Vista is released and live.com is more mature, users will be able to manage their gadgets from both platforms - and easily interchange according to whatever context they're in.

14/06/2006 - Windows Vista Pricing too High - In a poll conducted here at neowin.net, many members found the proposed pricing of Windows Vista Ultimate which is rumored to cost $450 at the launch early next year too pricey. At the time of posting, 442 of a total of 1388 votes found $299 a fair price, while 861 found it a better idea to pick it up on the street for 10 bucks.

With todays PC buyers concerned about having to upgrade in order to run newer versions of Windows, its becoming all too easy to pick up a budget PC for under $450 that is quite capable of running all the enhancements included in Vista Ultimate, like Aero Glass and Media Center.

Microsoft have already disclosed that it will be possible to upgrade the Vista license from within Windows using Windows Anytime Upgrade, but it's still unclear if the upgrade will be PC specific, or if it can be used on a new PC should a user replace an outdated machine. Our source at Microsoft; during the Vista lab in the beginning of June said that "those concerns are still under investigation" and that it's not yet possible to transfer an upgrade license to another PC.

Microsoft have launched an army of tools to combat piracy of their flagship OS, such as Windows Genuine Advantage and crippling the system if it can't be verified. One has to wonder if these tools actually do work. However, they will get better sales thus allowing for a significant price drop.

Time will tell if Microsoft has chosen the correct way to go on Vista license costs, judging from our poll there will be quite a few who will need convincing that Windows Vista Ultimate is going to be worth it.

14/06/2006 - Google's not-so-very-secret weapon - On the banks of the windswept Columbia River, Google is working on a secret weapon in its quest to dominate the next generation of Internet computing. But it is hard to keep a secret when it is as big as two football fields, with twin cooling towers protruding four stories into the sky.

The towers, looming like an information-age nuclear plant, mark the site of what may soon be one of the world's most powerful supercomputers, helping to supply the ever-greater horsepower needed to process billions of search queries a day and a growing repertory of other Internet services.

Microsoft and Yahoo have announced they are building giant data centers upstream in Washington State, 130 miles to the north. But Google is doing something radically different here. The very need for two cooling towers, each connected to a football field-sized data center, is evidence of its extraordinary ambition.

As imposing as Google's new Oregon data center is, when it opens it will only a piece of a worldwide computing system known as the Googleplex, which is tied together by strands of fiber optic cables. A similar computing center has recently been completed in Atlanta.
