13/06/2006 - Needham & Co Predict Mac Market Share Explosion - Apple's move to Intel processors and its development of Boot Camp could triple its market share in the home markets, according to Needham & Co analyst Charles Wolf. He describes the dual boot and Intel move as maybe: "Conjuring the magic that could double its market share."

Wolf notes his recent online survey of college students, which revealed a dramatic increase in the number of Macs Apple may potentially sell, but warns that these results may be biased because the "higher education market is one of the Mac's strongholds".

13/06/2006 - RIAA: Music Piracy 'Contained' - Nearly a year after the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling against online music file-sharing services, the CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America says unauthorized song swapping has been "contained."
"The problem has not been eliminated," says association CEO Mitch Bainwol. "But we believe digital downloads have emerged into a growing, thriving business, and file-trading is flat."

That's an optimistic view from an industry that saw its numbers slide to near oblivion after the launch of the original Napster in 1999. CD sales fell as much as 30%, and the RIAA pressed Congress and the courts for relief against what it said was rampant piracy.

After the Supreme Court ruled that the services could be liable for piracy by their users, the RIAA sent cease-and-desist letters to several firms. Most — including BearShare, WinMX and Grokster — shut down. EDonkey and others said they would switch to a licensed, paid model.

EDonkey, which along with BitTorrent is one of the most-used file-sharing services, has yet to make the switch.
Garland says the RIAA has made some inroads. "They have removed the profiteers from online piracy," he says. "They've also embarked on a very successful education campaign. Kids now know about copyright, and the consequences."

The RIAA has sued just over 18,000 individuals for sharing songs online, with 4,500 settling for about $4,000 per case.

Album sales are still down — about 3% this year. But Bainwol says digital sales — up 77% — make up for the shortfall.

13/06/2006 - Windows Gets Largest Security Update in Over a Year - Thanks to Radish™ for the heads up

12. That's the number of updates to be released with the June security patches. Of the twelve, nine are specific to the Windows operating system itself and one of those is listed as "critical" designating it as a severe security concern. Two are related to the Microsoft Office productivity suite and one is for Microsoft Exchange e-mail server.

Of the 12 updates, one of the Office patches fixes a back door in Microsoft Word that was discovered in May and was exploited by the Backdoor.Ginwui virus. Another of the 12 updates is the result of a $521 million dollar lawsuit against Microsoft by Eolas Technologies Inc. As part of the settlement Microsoft had to disable ActiveX from automatically starting when users visit some web sites. Prior to this update users were able to apply this change to their browsers at will, but the patch makes it mandatory.

Microsoft also stated that they will not fix a back door in Windows 98 and Windows ME that was discovered in April of this year. They claim that to do so would require a major re-write of the Windows Explorer version in those products. Support for those versions of Windows officially ends on July 11th of this year.

Microsoft releases security patches on the second Tuesday of each month, which happens to be today. They are urging users to download this months updates as soon as they are made available and are going a step further by suggesting that those running older versions of Windows should upgrade to newer versions such as Windows XP SP2 as soon as possible.

13/06/2006 - AMD Plans Major CPU Price Drops Day After "Conroe" - Submitted by member oddcrap with thanks to Blackima for first reporting this in BPN.

AMD will drastically cut prices on its desktop processors after the July 23rd release of IntelÂ’s Core 2 Duo Conroe processors. The memos that DailyTech has secured are between AMD and Japanese system manufacturers and indicate the following price cuts will become effective July 24th, 2006:
  • AMD Athlon 64 price cuts will receive price cut up to 30%
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 will receive price cuts up to 50%
  • AMD Sempron processors will receive price cuts up to 15%
The memos only mention the AM2 processors; however the AM2 parts are now priced identically with Socket 939 components.  AMD has previously indicated that the aim of the AM2 processors was to be price competitive with its legacy components. Several of the dual-core components do not show a price drop, but it's possible AMD has just not announced the pricing on these processors yet.  The Athlon 64 FX model line will not receive any price reduction.

13/06/2006 - Sky and BT Frontrunners to Buy AOL UK - Submitted by member oddcrap
Sky and BT are reported to be heading the queue to buy AOL's UK internet arm. AOL announced the decision to sell its UK access division last week, and today is the deadline for bidders to register their interest. According to press reports, Sky and BT Group are "frontrunners" in the race to snap up the Time Warner-owned company, which is the UK's third-largest ISP after BT and NTL/Telewest.

If either bid is successful, AOL customers could see their email addresses changed to BT or EasyNet, the ISP that Sky bought last year for £211m. EasyNet also provides business solutions and owns UK Online. Sky aims to launch its broadband service this summer, and may offer it free to existing satellite subscribers. As the current wholesale provider for most of the UK's 1.3 million AOL broadband subscribers, BT would find it relatively simple to add AOL's customers to its existing 2.6 million users.

Monday Symantec released an advisory concerning a vulnerability in Yahoo Mail that is currently being exploited by JS.Yamanner@m, a new worm that is written in JavaScript. It exploits a vulnerability in the Yahoo email service to send a copy of itself to the user's Yahoo email contacts. At the time the advisory was issued there was no patch for the vulnerability, but by the end of the day Monday Yahoo said that it had a fix for the flaw and that very few of its customers had been affected. This vulnerability only exists in Yahoo Mail and does not affect users of the latest version of Yahoo Mail Beta.
