11/06/2006 - European Apple Sales on the Rise as Industry Slows Down - Apple continues to excel in the UK and Europe, growing sales at a significantly faster rate than the industry average. New data from the analysts at IDC shows the company continues to make gains. "In the UK and Western Europe, Apple shipment growths outperformed the overall PC market in both notebook and desktop form factors in Q1 2006," observed IDC senior research analyst Michael Larner.

Apple notebooks drive UK sales boom

Apple held a first quarter market share of 2.9 per cent in the UK overall, when desktop and notebook sales are combined. Individually, it took 3.4 per cent of the UK market for notebooks and grabbed 2.65 per cent of the desktop market. This 3.4 per cent market share of UK notebook sales is a 50.15 per cent year-on-year improvement for the company, the analysts said. That's far ahead of the industry average, which saw 20.44 per cent improvement in the period.

Mac desktop sales rise as industry stagnates

Apple also grew its desktop sales by 27.38 per cent, year on year. While this delivered only a 2.65 per cent market share, other vendors fared far worse in desktop sales - the overall value of the desktop computer market fell 6.16 per cent year on year, IDC said.

In Western Europe, Apple holds 2.6 per cent of the desktop market and 2.5 per cent of the notebook market. In unit sales that's up 11.7 per cent and 18.3 per cent, year on year. Meanwhile the overall EMEA market climbed only 1.8 per cent and 2 per cent, leaving Apple rising at a much faster rate than the rest of the PC pack.

Specific markets explained

Inevitably, pan-industry shipment figures offer a slanted picture of the true extent of Apple's success. Critics of such figures point out that they include server shipments and also large installations of corporate PCs, which are used only for specific purposes. Given Apple's limited presence in the corporate markets, market share figures will always be set against the company.

Macworld UK asked IDC research director Karine Paoli to offer her observations about the markets Apple targets. She's optimistic for the company.

"Apple is certainly doing well at the moment across our region," she explained. "The company has been able to not only leverage from the momentum created around the iPod, but also from a good go-to-market strategy: refreshed products, price-positioning, and improvements in its supply chain with more use of its two-tier distribution channel to reach a wider market," she said.

Macs define education, graphics, media markets

Apple also remains strong in education, graphics and media markets, she remarked. Notebooks remain the secret sauce: "The refresh of Apple's product lines, in particular in the notebook space, along with the move to Intel processors should help drive continued expansion throughout 2006, in both the consumer and business space," she remarked.

Clearly as growth rates across the industry decline, maintaining its lead won't be an easy ride for Apple, she warned: "It faces fierce competition from all other players, as the market is intensively competitive at the moment and we do not see this softening in the second half of the year," she warned.

11/06/2006 - Time Magazine Warns Apple Competitors Concerning MacBook - Time Magazine has declared Apple's new MacBook to be a "powerful and affordable" computer. The magazine has published its first review of Apple's consumer notebook, and it's full of praise. It even observes that buying one could make sense to anyone looking for a new PC.

"The next version (of Windows) Vista might be a success, but with a MacBook you can hedge your bet. You get a computer that runs both Mac OS X and Windows XP today, and even appears to meet the minimum requirements for Vista once it gets here," the report declares.

The review also notes that while some features that exist within the MacBook Pros aren't there, but that doesn't detract from its value: "The MacBook has most of what its pricier sibling the MacBook Pro offers," it reports. A built-in iSight camera, Apple Remote, MagSafe, Bluetooth and external monitor support are noteworthy, according to Time.

The reviewer also tested Apple's Boot Camp software. "On startup, I can choose the Mac OS or Windows, and everything I tried in the latter environment worked as well as it could have," he notes. "I even tested out MTV's Urge service with - Jobs forgive me - an iRiver Clix music player. It all worked together even more smoothly than it had done on my high-powered Dell desktop," he reports.

"Dell and HP should be very worried indeed," the report concludes.

11/06/2006 - Court Upholds VoIP Wire Tapping Requirement - On Friday June 9th, a U.S. court upheld a previous FCC ruling that requires all VoIP providers to make wiretapping capabilities available to the U.S. government by May 2007. While various civil rights organizations and technology based companies, including Sun Micro Systems, had fought the original August 2004 decision, their voices could not convince the courts otherwise.

Obviously, the FCC is pleased with the ruling. Jim Dempsey, policy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology, however, is a bit dismayed. In an email, Mr. Dempsey states, "This decision threatens the privacy rights of innocent Americans as well as the ability of technology companies to innovate freely." Others involved in opposing the decision fear that the cost of implementing the wiretapping capabilities may wind up being passed on to the consumer.

10/06/2006 - Mind over matter no longer science fiction - Using a specially designed skull cap fitted with electrodes, scientists are now able to control a computer, and write characters onto the screen.

As Dr. Brunner concentrates on the "B" of "bonjour" in a keyboard-like grid of letters and symbols taking up half the screen, a computer randomly highlights lines of characters in rapid succession.

Each time the row -- vertical or horizontal -- containing the letter "B" is illuminated, Brunner's brain emits a slightly stronger signal. It takes the computer about 15 seconds to figure out what letter he is looking at. The system is doubly adaptive, with both the software and the person using it becoming more efficient over time.

10/06/2006 - Windows Vista Beta 2: Largest software download in history - In an instant message chat, Microsoft has told the Windows Featured Communities that the demand for Windows Vista Beta 2 has been overwhelming. It is, in fact, the largest downloaded software in history. Currently, they are serving product keys out ten times faster then the downloads can be served. In fact, they are pumping out bits as fast as they can - any faster and there would be a measurable impact on the internet. In fact, I quote a Microsoft representive:

"So, we are literally saying that if we increased our bandwidth any further there's a possibilty of taking down the Internet - people might have problems with World Cup viewing, etc"

People who have recieved Vista Beta 2 product keys, but are unable to download, may need to wait a few days, up to one week. Microsoft encoruages users who want to try out Windows Vista Beta 2 to order the DVD. When they recieve the DVD in 1-4 weeks, install it, and activate it, they will be automattically guaranteed an RC1 upgrade.

09/06/2006 - Dell: Linux is Now "Over 1/4 of What We Sell" to Enterprise - Dell has been a standard in the Intel based server market for many many years, and in the past, that generally meant that the OS provider for those systems was Microsoft. While Windows is still the OS for the majority of Dell servers sold, Dell now says that Linux makes up 25 percent of its enterprise market and that they see those numbers growing, not shrinking, over time. The increase in Linux sales is attributed primarily to Dell customers who have migrated from Unix based systems. For those customers, Linux is viewed as a comfortable change and isn't nearly as drastic as switching to a Windows based system.

Marching in tune with their increased Linux sales, Dell also states that they have improved their Linux services market and are capable of solving over 90 percent of Red Hat Linux service calls without involving Red Hat. Up to this point Dell has focused Linux sales primarily on the Red Hat distribution, but they are now in the process of approving Novell/SUSE Linux as a Tier 1 offering.

09/06/2006 - Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) Not Spyware! - Thanks MrCobra for the heads up on this update in Back Page News on our forums.

Microsoft defended its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool this week against charges that it acts like spyware because it constantly checks in with Microsoft when a user boots a PC with the tool installed.

A Microsoft representative said that when the WGA Notifications checks in with Microsoft when a PC is booted, it is not providing any information to the vendor if a PC's copy of Windows has already been validated. Instead, it is checking with a "server-side configuration setting to determine if WGA should run or not." The check-in also gives Microsoft the ability to disable the WGA program, if necessary.

09/06/2006 - AOL to offer free security tool to all Internet users - The software, named "Total Care," is expected to be available to software testers in the coming weeks, a source familiar with AOL's plans said. The product will include security and PC care features, matching Microsoft's recently launched Windows Live OneCare product and upcoming products from Symantec and McAfee, this person said. The company has partnered with an unnamed third-party security providers for the bundle, the source said. Currently, AOL has deals with McAfee and CA for the AOL Safety and Security Center, which offers a firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware and phishing protection to AOL subscribers at no cost.

Total Care marks one of AOL's first steps in the security space, outside of tools it offers exclusively to the millions of subscribers to its Internet service. The Dulles, Va.-based company is also quietly running a test of a security tool--the Active Security Monitor--that screens the security status of a computer and offers guidance on improving protection. In the wake of the Microsoft's recently announced OneCare announcement, all major security companies have since said they would release similar products. McAfee will provide technology for at least part of AOL's Total Care.
