09/06/2006 - Dell: Linux is Now "Over 1/4 of What We Sell" to Enterprise - Dell has been a standard in the Intel based server market for many many years, and in the past, that generally meant that the OS provider for those systems was Microsoft. While Windows is still the OS for the majority of Dell servers sold, Dell now says that Linux makes up 25 percent of its enterprise market and that they see those numbers growing, not shrinking, over time. The increase in Linux sales is attributed primarily to Dell customers who have migrated from Unix based systems. For those customers, Linux is viewed as a comfortable change and isn't nearly as drastic as switching to a Windows based system.
Marching in tune with their increased Linux sales, Dell also states that they have improved their Linux services market and are capable of solving over 90 percent of Red Hat Linux service calls without involving Red Hat. Up to this point Dell has focused Linux sales primarily on the Red Hat distribution, but they are now in the process of approving Novell/SUSE Linux as a Tier 1 offering.

Microsoft defended its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool this week against charges that it acts like spyware because it constantly checks in with Microsoft when a user boots a PC with the tool installed.
A Microsoft representative said that when the WGA Notifications checks in with Microsoft when a PC is booted, it is not providing any information to the vendor if a PC's copy of Windows has already been validated. Instead, it is checking with a "server-side configuration setting to determine if WGA should run or not." The check-in also gives Microsoft the ability to disable the WGA program, if necessary.

09/06/2006 - AOL to offer free security tool to all Internet users - The software, named "Total Care," is expected to be available to software testers in the coming weeks, a source familiar with AOL's plans said. The product will include security and PC care features, matching Microsoft's recently launched Windows Live OneCare product and upcoming products from Symantec and McAfee, this person said. The company has partnered with an unnamed third-party security providers for the bundle, the source said. Currently, AOL has deals with McAfee and CA for the AOL Safety and Security Center, which offers a firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware and phishing protection to AOL subscribers at no cost.
Total Care marks one of AOL's first steps in the security space, outside of tools it offers exclusively to the millions of subscribers to its Internet service. The Dulles, Va.-based company is also quietly running a test of a security tool--the Active Security Monitor--that screens the security status of a computer and offers guidance on improving protection. In the wake of the Microsoft's recently announced OneCare announcement, all major security companies have since said they would release similar products. McAfee will provide technology for at least part of AOL's Total Care.

09/06/2006 - China Faces EU Piracy Pressure - China has faced fresh criticism from the EU over its lacklustre efforts to tackle the country's soaring piracy rates.
In April Neowin reported fresh efforts by the Chinese government to deal with the counterfeit software and media that flooded the market. Today European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson has told China to shape up once again, or face a backlash from Europe.
He said: "The more the Chinese door swings open and the world sees a responsible China playing by the rules, the more our citizens will be able to understand our shared interest in deepening our relationship."
Despite the booming Chinese economy, counterfeit goods flood the market in China and the EU warned the government it must now "apply rather than circumvent the rules".

08/06/2006 - Intel to cut Prices by 60 Percent - In a bold move to regain some lost market share from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Intel Corp. is planning to cut its Pentium processor prices by as much as 60 percent. The price cuts are set to take place on July 23.
Last quarter AMD increased its market share to 20 percent. This is the first time AMD has seen market shares this high in more than four years. With Dell now buying AMD processors in addition to Intel processors, Intel may be in for some lower numbers, at least until Conroe hits the shelves.
Intel, being aggressive about their market share, has decided to cut back prices on their higher end dual-core chips by 15 percent. Lower end Pentium processors will see price cuts by 60 percent. This may also provide Intel with the avenue to get rid of some older processors to make way for its much anticipated Conroe core.
As expected, AMD also hinted that they would be cutting prices to follow Intel, though not quite as much. Though AMD is not ready to start a price war, this should be a win-win situation for the consumer.

Microsoft has cut PC-to-PC synchronization from Vista. Vista Beta 2, which is slated to go to as many as two million testers, does not include the P2P synchronization technology. Quality is the reason for the latest cut, Microsoft officials said.
Microsoft officials decided the week of June 5 to cut another feature from Windows Vista: PC-to-PC synchronization.
Microsoft officials said they cut the feature due to quality concerns, but the functionality is still "something we plan to deliver to our customers in the future," according to a company spokeswoman.
PC-to-PC synchronization was set to allow Vista users to synchronize files between machines running the Vista operating system.
While PC-to-PC synchronization is out, other P2P synchronization technologies will still ship with Vista, including Meeting Space, an ad-hoc P2P connectivity feature, company officials said.
"From the beginning, we have made it clear that the top priority for Windows Vista is quality," the company spokeswoman said in an e-mailed statement. "While PC to PC synch is a great feature that improves productivity and collaboration we don't have it at the quality level our customers demand. As a result the decision was made to remove it from Windows Vista. This is part of the normal beta process as we constantly evaluate, improve and fine tune the features of Windows Vista.
"At this point in the development cycle we do not expect to make any major feature additions or subtractions, but will continue to listen to customer feedback as we begin to prepare for final availability," the spokeswoman continued. "That said, it is always possible to see tweaks with the features, and revisions made to the fit and finish and design work. Work on PC to PC Synchronization continues and is something we plan to deliver to our customers in the future."

08/06/2006 - Hacker Said to Resell Internet Phone Service - Federal authorities arrested one man in Miami and another in Spokane, Wash., today in connection with what they said was a hacking scheme involving the resale of Internet telephone service.
The suspects were said to have illegally tapped into the lines of legitimate Internet phone companies, saddling them with the expense of extra traffic, while collecting more than $1 million in connection fees.
The case, one of the first involving this kind of elaborate Internet phone hacking, illustrated how Internet-based communications may be criminally exploited, and raised fresh questions about the security of phone traffic over largely unregulated networks.
Prosecutors say that starting in November 2004, the man arrested in Miami — Edwin Andres Pena, 23, a Venezuelan who has permanent residency in the United States — used two companies he created to offer wholesale phone connections at discounted rates to small Internet phone companies.
Instead of buying access to other networks to connect his clients' calls, Mr. Pena paid about $20,000 to Robert Moore, the man arrested in Spokane, to create "what amounted to 'free' routes by surreptitiously hacking into the computer networks" of unwitting Internet phone providers, and then routing his customers' calls over those providers' systems, according to the federal complaint.
