08/06/2006 - Another Windows Vista Feature Bites the Dust - Will there be anything left when Vista finally ships? Microsoft seems to be cutting 'features' from Vista left and right. Would you rather wait longer and have a full featured OS, or would you rather have Microsoft cut features to bring you Vista earlier? Leave your comments and tell us what you think.
Microsoft has cut PC-to-PC synchronization from Vista. Vista Beta 2, which is slated to go to as many as two million testers, does not include the P2P synchronization technology. Quality is the reason for the latest cut, Microsoft officials said.
Microsoft officials decided the week of June 5 to cut another feature from Windows Vista: PC-to-PC synchronization.
Microsoft officials said they cut the feature due to quality concerns, but the functionality is still "something we plan to deliver to our customers in the future," according to a company spokeswoman.
PC-to-PC synchronization was set to allow Vista users to synchronize files between machines running the Vista operating system.
While PC-to-PC synchronization is out, other P2P synchronization technologies will still ship with Vista, including Meeting Space, an ad-hoc P2P connectivity feature, company officials said.
"From the beginning, we have made it clear that the top priority for Windows Vista is quality," the company spokeswoman said in an e-mailed statement. "While PC to PC synch is a great feature that improves productivity and collaboration we don't have it at the quality level our customers demand. As a result the decision was made to remove it from Windows Vista. This is part of the normal beta process as we constantly evaluate, improve and fine tune the features of Windows Vista.
"At this point in the development cycle we do not expect to make any major feature additions or subtractions, but will continue to listen to customer feedback as we begin to prepare for final availability," the spokeswoman continued. "That said, it is always possible to see tweaks with the features, and revisions made to the fit and finish and design work. Work on PC to PC Synchronization continues and is something we plan to deliver to our customers in the future."

08/06/2006 - Hacker Said to Resell Internet Phone Service - Federal authorities arrested one man in Miami and another in Spokane, Wash., today in connection with what they said was a hacking scheme involving the resale of Internet telephone service.
The suspects were said to have illegally tapped into the lines of legitimate Internet phone companies, saddling them with the expense of extra traffic, while collecting more than $1 million in connection fees.
The case, one of the first involving this kind of elaborate Internet phone hacking, illustrated how Internet-based communications may be criminally exploited, and raised fresh questions about the security of phone traffic over largely unregulated networks.
Prosecutors say that starting in November 2004, the man arrested in Miami — Edwin Andres Pena, 23, a Venezuelan who has permanent residency in the United States — used two companies he created to offer wholesale phone connections at discounted rates to small Internet phone companies.
Instead of buying access to other networks to connect his clients' calls, Mr. Pena paid about $20,000 to Robert Moore, the man arrested in Spokane, to create "what amounted to 'free' routes by surreptitiously hacking into the computer networks" of unwitting Internet phone providers, and then routing his customers' calls over those providers' systems, according to the federal complaint.

08/06/2006 - Netcraft Survey Reveals IIS Use Up, Apache Use Down - The Internet experienced its strongest site growth ever last month, powered by a surge in blogs and free web sites. In the June 2006 survey we received responses from 85,541,228 sites, a gain of 3.96 million sites from the May report. This is the largest one-month increase in sites in the history of the Netcraft survey, surpassing a gain of 3.3 million in March 2003, although the 2003 gain was larger in percentage terms (8.5%, compared to 4.7% this month).
Microsoft continues to gain share in the web server market, chipping away at Apache's commanding lead. The number of hostnames on Windows servers grew by 4.5 million, giving Microsoft 29.7% market share, a gain of 4.25% for the month. Apache had a decline of 429K hostnames, and loses 3.5% to 61.25%.
Apache's lead over Microsoft, which stood at 48.2% in March, has been narrowed to 31.5%, a shift of 16.7% in just three months.

08/06/2006 - China Puts the Censorship Ball Back in Googles' Court - On Tuesday, Google co-founder Sergey Brin stated that that the search giant may have "compromised our principles" in kowtowing to the Chinese governments demands for censorship. Now the government of China has responded. On Thursday Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said that while China welcomes business from foreign internet companies, they must respect and abide by the country's laws.
It is apparent from these statements that the Chinese government does not intend to back down on its censorship policies. All eyes will now be on Google as it is left to struggle with its principles and the Google philosophy of "don't be evil".

08/06/2006 - Sharp's PN-655U 65-inch LCD Now Available - Weren't you just telling your boss yesterday that what you really need to increase productivity is a 1080p 65-inch LCD HDTV? We're sure you were because Sharp announced today that the PN-655U we've been drooling over is now available in the US.
Of course, they didn't mention a price but judging from the nearly-$9,000 price tag of its existing 45-inch cousin, we suggest ratting out a coworker or two to make room in the budget. Isn't it worth it? They are also showing off the consumer edition LC-65D90U that is already available for between $15 and $20k, and their new 57-inch LC-57D90U, but you've probably got better odds of convincing your boss it's a good purchase than your wife.

08/06/2006 - The Ultimate Business Travel Laptop - Is it a notebook or a desktop? Taiwan's Dialogue Flybook VM doesn't seem sure either, thanks to a novel screen hinge mechanism that literally lifts the machine's 12.1in, 1,280 x 768 widescreen panel up and away from the keyboard unit.
The third-generation Flybook - the first two series distinguished themselves with their tablet-style fold and rotate display - was on show at Computex this week. Like a regular laptop, the VM's screen folds back on a hinge at the rear. However, it's also mounted on a telescopic stand allowing the display to be position upward and forwards more like a desktop LCD monitor.
The internals are totally notebook: a 1.66GHz low-voltage Core Duo processor, Intel 945GM integrated chipset and Intel ProWireless 3945ABG Wi-Fi adaptor - this is Dialogue's first machine capable of carrying Centrino Duo branding.
In addition to Wi-Fi, the VM has Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth 2.0 but this time round Dialogue appears to have dropped the built-in GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio found on earlier models. However, there's an ExpressCard slot for when card makers get round to migrating from old-style PC Card products. The VM will ship with at least 512MB of DDR 2 memory on board, expandable to 2GB, and a 1.8in, 30GB hard drive. There's an integrated VGA webcam, stereo speakers and multiple microphones connected in an array for superior background-noise reduction. It has a fingerprint reader, too.
The machine weighs 1.64kg and measures 29.2 x 22.2 x 2.6cm - so it's not very much bigger than earlier Flybooks. There's no word yet on pricing or availability.

08/06/2006 - HD DVD-R/RW Media Available July 5 in Japan - Hitachi and Mitsubishi have both announced today that (in Japan at least), they will be releasing single layer HD DVD-Rs, with RW and dual layer blanks to come later this summer. Still no recorders announced, but with their importance in the Japanese market and media now scheduled, they can't be very far off.
Impress approximates the price at about 2,000 yen ($17.75 US), which is about the same price as single layer Blu-ray media. What the press releases don't seem to say is whether this media is 1X or 2X speed rated; because of the difference in the specifications 1X (36.55mbps) media could still play HD DVD content, but would be a slower burner than the Blu-ray drives that are coming out rated at 2X (72mbps) or higher. Impress only mentions the Hitachi as being 1X.

08/06/2006 - Vission Iceman Outdoor PC Dares The Elements - Apart from Foxconn putting all their motherboards in big tubes with running water down the outer glass sheet, which only got amusing when the water stopped flowing, and others with their crush proof USB drives, Vission has the Iceman; a totally rigged, outdoor friendly computer.
The fanless computer is both dust and rain resistant, even featuring a slash resistant skirt around the connectors. Using a Via C7 1.0 GHz to 1.5 GHz processor, supporting up to 1 GB of DDR2 memory and using an MPEG-2 decoder the Iceman is good for both industrial and entertainment purposes.
Measuring 212 mm (H) x 206 mm (W) x 64 mm (D) the Iceman is wall mountable and can contain an optional wireless LAN and digital TV receiver, both via an internal USB module. It is good for home entertainment if paired up with a projector outside and on sunny days you have a whole wall of your house to use as a TV.

08/06/2006 - Microsoft: Oops, We Forgot to Mention, WGA Calls Home Daily - Microsoft Corp. acknowledged Wednesday that it needs to better inform users that its tool for determining whether a computer is running a pirated copy of Windows also quietly checks in daily with the software maker.
The company said the undisclosed daily check is a safety measure designed to allow the tool, called Windows Genuine Advantage, to quickly shut down in case of a malfunction. For example, if the company suddenly started seeing a rash of reports that Windows copies were pirated, it might want to shut down the program to make sure it wasn't delivering false results.
"It's kind of a safety switch," said David Lazar, who directs the Windows Genuine Advantage program.
Lazar said the company added the safety measure because the piracy check, despite widespread distribution, is still a pilot program. He said the company was worried that it might have an unforeseen emergency that would require the program to terminate quickly.
