Is the day near when you will get music on your BlackBerry and e-mail on your iPod?
The idea of an “AppleBerry” partnership between Research In Motion Ltd. and Apple Computer Inc. was floated yesterday by Peter Misek, an analyst with Canaccord Capital Inc., who last year accurately predicted a partnership between RIM and Intel Corp.
Such a deal would have huge merit because each company lacks what the other provides. RIM wants a firm foothold in the consumer market and Apple doesn't have a presence in the booming wireless data sector, he said.
The two might jointly develop a new device: Apple could create a cellphone combining its iPod music device with RIM's wireless technology, or RIM might embed Apple's iTunes music into a future BlackBerry, he speculated.
Senior executives at Intel have recommended that Apple work with RIM, Mr. Misek said in a research note.
“Yeah, it could make sense. Technically it could work,” said Jean-Louis Gassée, a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley who once oversaw Apple's global products division and research and development. But he questioned whether the strong personalities leading the two companies could work together.

06/06/2006 - Philips Announces 50GB PC Blu-Ray Burner - Where are the HD-DVD PC drives?
Today, Phillips has announced a new Blu-ray optical drive and media, providing up to 50GB of storage on a single disc. This is a considerable amount more than current dual-layer DVDs that can fit up to 8.5GB.
The two speed “triple writer” drive is also capable of burning DVDs and CDs, so only one drive is necessary in a machine. The drive will be shipping in August, while writable media (BD-R) will be available from July. Re-writable media, or BD-RE, will be available around September.
Initial media will only be single layer and will fit up to 25GB, compared to the 50GB of the dual layer discs, which wonÂ’t be available until Christmas. At 1x speed, it will take roughly 135 minutes to burn 25GB, or close to 70 minutes when at 2x.
There are no set dates planned for a notebook drive, but expect to see them in 2007. Due to the slower than DVD spin speeds, burning a Blu-ray disc actually uses less power than burning a DVD, should you be concerned about your current power supply.
Pricing will be around 849 euros [$1,090.80 USD] for the drive, 15 euros [$19.27 USD] for the 25GB BD-R writable media and 20 euros for the BD-RE re-writable media. Nero 7 will be bundled with the device, which has been Blu-ray compatible for some months and makes burning a Blu-ray as easy as burning a DVD.

Hewlett-Packard Co. is recalling HP Photosmart R707 digital cameras after receiving one report of a camera catching fire. No injuries have been reported, the U.S.
The cameras were sold at electronic, computer, camera and online stores nationwide from August 2004 through April 2006 for between $250 and $400.

In yet another silent release by Apple, the U2 iPod has been rereleased. It silently appeared on Apple's site today, with the slogan "Back for an encore". It features video, color screen, and engraved autographs on the back from the members of U2.
However, one has to wonder if there will ever be an Apple announcement again, between the recent Mac@work section appearing on their website yesterday, the much anticipated Macbook quietly appearing, and this. Maybe it just means they have a big announcement coming up.

06/06/2006 - Lenovo Denies Ditching Linux - In reaction to what Neowin and other news outlets around the world reported a couple days ago, Chinese computer supplier Lenovo has clairifed a report that it is planning to stop offering Linux on its range of PCs and laptops.
Frank Kardonski, Lenovo's worldwide product manager for its 3000 series, had indicated that Linux support was being dropped by saying, "We will not have models available for Linux, and we do not have custom orders ... What you see is what you get. And at this point, it's (Microsoft) Windows."
But Lenovo made strenuous efforts on Monday to set the record straight, emphasizing that Kardonski provided incorrect information and that the company plans to continue to offer Linux on ThinkPads, just not the 3000 series. Lenovo actually plans to support Linux on its ThinkPads starting in the third quarter, in partnership with Novell, Marc Godin, vice president of marketing for Lenovo's notebooks said.
Chinese customers of Lenovo will still be able to buy PCs with Red Flag, the Linux distribution backed by the Chinese government, said Grant Shenk, who works in Lenovo's worldwide software marketing group.

06/06/2006 - Britons Warned Over Illegal MP3 Site - Users of bargain music download website AllOfMP3.com have been warned that they are breaking the law. The Russian-based music downloading site has gained massive popularity in the UK, offering albums for as little as £1, but the the record industry trade association in Britain warned that the site was not licensed to sell digital music and was therefore illegal.
A survey found that AllOfMP3.com accounts for 14% of all UK music downloads, but Matt Phillips from the BPI had a warning for those using the online service.
"It is illegal for them to sell the recordings in Russia or anywhere else because they are not licensed, and UK consumers are infringing copyright law because they are making illegal copies from an unlicensed source."
The website states that it is licensed by the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society (ROMS) but the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said this license was not legitimate and would not cover consumers in other countries even it it were.

06/06/2006 - Google to Introduce Online Spreadsheet Software - Google Inc. will begin rolling out it's new online spreadsheet software today to a limited few in a move that sees the web maestros taking on Microsoft's Excel with a completely free alternative.
At 9am EDT the company will begin accepting sign-ups for the new product through it's Google Labs site. The software will be released for public use after the initial product is tested by a limited audience, much like Google's Gmail email service.
Google's key focus for the product is the sharing of information, to ensure friends, family and associates can access the same information from different locations. User-friendliness will be paramount, and this may provide the largest threat to Microsoft.

06/06/2006 - Nvidia Launches Dual-GPU GeForce - Seeking to gain a bit of cachet at the Computex trade show this week, Nvidia announced the GeForce 7950 GX2 dual-GPU graphics card on Monday. In total, Nvidia claims the cards will offer 48 pixel pipes, 16 vertex shaders, 76.8 GB per second of memory bandwidth and 24 billion texels per second of fill rate in a single card, complemented by a pair of DVI connections. The two GPUs are apired with a full gigabyte of DDR-2 memory as a frame buffer, allowing resolutions up to 2560 X 1600.
The card is also being marketed as "HDCP-capable," requiring other components that use HDCP technology. The cards are immediately available from e-tailers and other vendors, Nvidia said. Although Nvidia did not release a suggested price for the card, a quick survey of online retailers revealed prices ranging from about $635 to $720.
