05/06/2006 - Yahoo Integration in Windows Live Messenger - Coming Soon - At long last we are hearing some more on the Yahoo and MSN interoperability deal that was announced last year, thanks to Leah over at the team blog. The interoperability will allow users on both services to send basic IM's to one another, and see each other's status. I suspect that some users will be disappointed by this, but as it's taken two companies this long to get here, lets be grateful for whatever they provide us.
I know the first question that testers will be asking is "when can we try this?" I would not expect beta testers (both managed or those on ideas.live.com) to get a test build before Messenger goes final, though as always, this could change. So now the second question will be "When is it going final?"

05/06/2006 - UK Politicians Push for Clearer Digital Music Restrictions - An influential group of politicians in the UK have stressed the need for consumers to be made fully aware of any restrictions on digital music prior to purchase. Analyzing the different copy protection systems in operation today, the All Party Parliamentary Internet Group suggested that labeling should clearly indicate how easy it is to move media between different devices.
The report contained a number of recommendations including the introduction of labeling guidelines giving consumers accurate information on the restrictions placed upon music or movies downloaded from the Internet. Consumers should, the report stated, be fully aware of just what they can do with the media they buy, from sharing with friends to moving between devices.

05/06/2006 - Woman Targeted by Web Hackers - A Nurse from Greater Manchester was targeted by a group of hackers with a new breed of malware.
Titled 'Ransomware' by security experts, the software, after entering a victim's PC encrypts the My Documents folder with a 30 character password, and leaves a ransom note detailing how to recover the files, and warning the user not to contact the police.
In this case, Ms Barrow, the user affected, did contact the police, and IT experts managed to recover some of her data. The instructions left by the program had told her to order drugs from an online pharmacy in order to receive the password to access her files.
This particular virus is known as Archiveus. The Greater Manchester Police warn: "Our High Tech Crime Unit is aware of this new type of crime and incidents of this kind could increase in future."
Virus Analysts at Sophos have cracked the trojan and discovered the password needed to unlock the user's files to be: mf2lro8sw03ufvnsq034jfowr18f3cszc20vmw.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said. "Now the password has been uncovered, there should be no reason for anyone hit by this ransomware attack to have to make any payments to the criminals behind it."

The new zone is available through the navigation buttons at the top of the company's US website. It's UK website still shows a 'business' link, which leads to a different selection of content.
The Mac at Work site includes links to content on the Apple site that should be relevant to science, small business, education and creative professionals. It also offers information about seminars, training and events.

05/06/2006 - Microsoft Plays Politics - In 2002, approaching a final deal with the Justice Department in its antitrust case, Microsoft flew one of Sen. John Warner's staffers to Seattle. During the two-day tour of Microsoft's campus, Chris DeLacy was briefed on the case.
DeLacy visit came one month before Microsoft and the federal government announced a settlement in the antitrust case that had dogged the company for more than a decade.
Paying for congressional travel is considered by some to be a form of lobbying, but one less closely watched than campaign contributions or the public disclosure forms. Lobbying has come under intense scrutiny since the arrest of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bribe public officials, fraud, and tax evasion.
Members of Congress and their staff members took about 23,000 trips worth $48.9 million paid for by private interests between January 1, 2000, through June 30, 2005, according to an analysis of congressional travel documents compiled by Medill News Service, American Public Media and the Center for Public Integrity.

05/06/2006 - Vista Beta Sucks up Battery Juice - Windows Vista delivers some pretty snazzy new graphics, but all that "wow" can be a real drain.
With the new version of Windows, Microsoft has created an operating system that offers advances in many areas, but laptop battery life is not one of them. Going by internal tests at one hardware maker, which declined to be named, there is noticeably lower battery life when Vista runs in its "average power" mode.
Microsoft has said that the current versions of the update deliver less battery life than Windows XP, but the company has also said it hopes to close the gap in the coming months.
One of Vista's most visible changes is its Aero interface, which offers spiffier graphics when people navigate through the operating system. Its advanced Aero Glass effects include translucent windows and animated transitions, as well as the ability to move between windows and documents by selecting from miniature versions of those items.

Microsoft Windows Vista's User Account Control (UAC) is currently set up in such a way as to take up to seven steps to delete a shortcut from the desktop. This may change when the product eventually ships, but for those who are not able to test Vista as yet, an interesting series of images details the process of deleting a shortcut from the desktop.

05/06/2006 - 'You've Got Mail' -- and Ads, Courtesy of Microsoft - It was only a matter of time before advertising found its way onto the desktop.
Microsoft is releasing Active Search today, an automated function that scans users' e-mails and then displays potential search terms related to that e-mail, along with text-based paid search ads.
Active Search is being released within Windows Live Mail Desktop, Microsoft's new e-mail application and is one of the first examples of how the company plans to deliver free ad-supported software to users through its recently launched Live initiative. Currently Live Mail is being used by a select group of users in a controlled beta test.
Like Google's Gmail application, Active Search "reads" the content of users' e-mails automatically and then pulls together a list of keywords. However, unlike Gmail, the new product automatically lists a group of keywords or phrases in the upper right hand corner of its inbox just above a search box. Users, if interested, can click on these keywords or enter searches of their own.
The idea is to allow users to quickly search the Web without having to jump back and forth from their inbox to the Web. "The hope is that this doesn't impede someone reading their e-mail," said Aly Valli, senior product planner, Microsoft adCenter.
