04/06/2006 - The Pirate Bay Threatens Compensation Claim - Sweden's self confessed daddy of BitTorrent has revealed that if the findings of an ongoing legal fiasco deem The Pirate Bay legal, the site's owners can claim compensation from the Swedish state.

The popular tracker claims to have not been breaking any of Sweden's laws before it was subject to raids on Thursday by the Swedish police force. Hackers retaliated by attacking the Swedish police website with a denial of service (DoS) attack a day later.

The hackers also unleashed their anger on Sony BMG and Warner Music's regional sites, allies to anti-filesharing devotees such as the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

Despite Sweden's anti-filesharing group Antipiratbyran being accused of misleading the police, a Swedish legal expert has deemed the site's threat of compensation as being "silly".

Regardless, it seems it's back to business as usual at The Pirate Bay.

04/06/2006 - Lenovo To Shun Linux - Computer maker Lenovo will not install or support the Linux operating system on any of its PCs, including ThinkPads and a series of new notebooks, the company said this week.

The Raleigh, N.C.-based company is clearly positioning itself as an exclusive partner of Microsoft, several weeks after the companies announced they were "reaffirming" global market development and cooperation agreements.

"We will not have models available for Linux, and we do not have custom order, either," said Frank Kardonski, Lenovo's worldwide product manager for Lenovo 3000 offerings. "What you see is what you get. And at this point, it's Windows."

While Lenovo and Microsoft have had a long OEM relationship that pre-dates Lenovo's takeover last year of the former IBM PC Co., IBM had been supportive of Linux throughout its product line — including preloading it on Thinkpads — before the sale to Lenovo.

Lenovo's two biggest rivals, Hewlett-Packard, Palo Alto, Calif., began offering Linux-based notebooks as early as 2004, and Dell offers Linux configurations on some of its PC clients.

04/06/2006 - Taiwan says all new PCs must be Linux-friendly - The Central Trust of China (Taiwan) has mandated for the first time that all desktop computers purchased from now on must be Linux-compatible, demonstrating the government's desire to widen the nation's usage of open source software. Central Trust is in charge of purchasing computers and other equipment for government agencies and schools.

About 120,000 desktops will be procured by the Central Trust under this new guideline.

"In the past, some of the procured computers did not support Linux, therefore this new mandate signifies the government's push to reduce reliance on the Windows operating system," Mike Lin, a consultant at the Taipei Computer Association said.

Thirty-three desktop models from hardware vendors including Acer, Asustek, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard Taiwan, were certified Linux-compatible, while four models each from Gigabyte Technology and Synnex Technology International were still under evaluation, according to the newspaper report.

In the legislative session held late last year, legislators reached an additional consensus that there should be a 25 percent cut of procurement budget on Microsoft's products across all government agencies. In response, Microsoft Taiwan Corp yesterday said that it respected the government's decision for the Linux inclusion into desktops, as long as the market is competing on a fair ground.

04/06/2006 - Yahoo drops CEO salary to $1 - On Friday, Yahoo's board of directors have brought Chairman and CEO Terry Semel's annual salary to one dollar! This is done while boosting overall future compensation through stock options and grants. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, Yahoo said its board had approved two days before a long-term executive retention plan where Semel will receive $1 for each of the next three years through 2008. His salary in each of the past three years was $600,000.

Yahoo is not unique among Silicon Valley companies in deemphasizing salary and linking compensation to company performance in the form of share bonuses. Since 2004, Google Inc., Yahoo's biggest rival, has paid $1 in salary to its top executives -- co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and CEO Eric Schmidt -- compensating the three billionaires instead through stock options and grants.

The world's largest Internet media company said Semel stands to benefit from a discretionary bonus in the form of a fully vested stock option of up to 1 million shares a year, priced at Yahoo's closing trading price the day of the grant. The actual amount of the bonus will be based annually on the performance of the company and be approved by the board.

As a retention incentive, the board granted Semel a stock option to buy 6 million shares of Yahoo's common stock at an exercise price of $31.59 per share, the closing price of the company's common stock on May 31, the date of the grant.

03/06/2006 - Net2Phone Sues Skype for Patent Infringement - IDT owned Net2Phone filed a lawsuit late Thursday against eBay owned Skype, claiming the p2p VOIP software infringes on one of it's patents. Net2Phone is seeking an injunction and collection of damages according to the suit filed at a federal court in Newark, New Jersey.

The specific patent in question is patent number 6,108,704 which, in basic terms, describes the method in which "a point-to-point Internet protocol exchanges Internet Protocol (IP) addresses between processing units to establish a point-to-point communication link between the processing units through the Internet."

03/06/2006 - IE 7 Beta 3 Release Set for August - Thanks Electronic Punk of OSNN for this news.
Microsoft is preparing a third beta, to be released some time in August. The extended beta period seems to have been prompted by compatibility issues that users have found with the first two IE 7 betas. One such issue, described in great detail on Microsoft's IEBlog, involved a problem where the browser would sometimes reload CAPTCHA images (character recognition tests used to fool spambots) when a network connection was idle:

Eric Lawrence of Microsoft stated that "for compatibility reasons, we're going to revert to IE6 behavior for IE7 Beta 3 to prevent this exact issue."

The Beta 3 release is expected to fix problems with some of the new features, such as the integrated RSS reader. Beta 3 will add an ability to control whether or not an article is marked as read. However, don't expect any major interface changes. According to an interview with IE 7 developers, there will be no new abilities to customize the interface, for example to put buttons and menus in customizable locations.

"Unfortunately, extensibility in IE7 is not where we want it to be," said Microsoft's Max Stevens, lead program manager in charge of IE 7's user interface. "We don't expect there to be many changes between now and ship, though this is definitely an area we're investigating for our next release."

The final release of IE 7 is expected to be some time this winter, and Microsoft has promised continual updates each year thereafter, starting with IE8, which will contain new networking and rendering features

03/06/2006 - Microsoft to Drop PDF Support in Office 2007 - Amid threats of a lawsuit from Adobe, Microsoft acknowledged Friday that it would remove support for saving files in PDF from Office 2007, as well as dropping its own rival format XPS from the productivity suite and Windows Vista.

The changes follow a breakdown of talks between the two technology giants after Microsoft announced last year it would include native PDF publishing with the release of Office 2007. The feature has long been a top request from customers, the company said at the time, and other office suites have the capability.

But Adobe was unhappy with the move and a dispute has been brewing for four months, Microsoft's lead counsel Brad Smith said Friday. Although PDF claims to be an open format and is integrated into OpenOffice and Apple's Mac OS X operating system, Adobe apparently sees Office 2007 as a real threat to its business.

03/06/2006 - ATi To Announce RD600 Chipset with 3 PCIe Slots - Thanks to NI3NOR for posting this in BPN

ATi is expected to announce their most powerful Crossfire chipset, the RD600, in coming days. Temporarily dubbed the ATi Xpress 3200 Intel Edition, the chipset will provide support for Intel's new Conroe processor.

This is no "Joe consumer" chipset, however. Sporting a 1333MHz FSB, Dual Channel DDR2-1066, and independent memory clocking, this is one for the hardcore enthusiasts with some cash to spare. It gets better. The RD600 also has 3 PCIe slots; two for Crossfire ready graphics cards and one for a physics acceleration card. Throw two X1800 or X1900 cards in there and the system will automatically increase the FSB of the PCIe slots from the stock 100MHz to between 125MHz and 150MHz.

The RD600 is expected to be released later this summer.
