03/06/2006 - Exclusive: Acer Ferrari 5000 Pictures - Today Acer announced the Ferrari 5000 and 1000 notebooks.
The Ferrari 1000 is a 12.1" screen notebook featuring the Turion X2 dual-core 64-bit processor while the Ferrari 5000 is a 15.4-inch desktop replacement style notebook with the Turion X2. The new Ferrari notebooks will sport a carbon fiber case asusual and will support the HD-DVD optical drive.

03/06/2006 - Net2Phone Sues Skype for Patent Infringement - IDT owned Net2Phone filed a lawsuit late Thursday against eBay owned Skype, claiming the p2p VOIP software infringes on one of it's patents. Net2Phone is seeking an injunction and collection of damages according to the suit filed at a federal court in Newark, New Jersey.
The specific patent in question is patent number 6,108,704 which, in basic terms, describes the method in which "a point-to-point Internet protocol exchanges Internet Protocol (IP) addresses between processing units to establish a point-to-point communication link between the processing units through the Internet."
Neither company could be reached for comments.

03/06/2006 - The Pirate Bay Comes Back Online - For the last couple of days there were stories of The Pirate Bay, the worlds largest bittorrent tracker, being taken offline by swedish athorities while they were being investigated for copyright infringement. Even the MPAA released a statement praising the police raids on TPB's hosting provider as proof that internet pirates can't hide anywhere. Well, maybe they jumped the gun just a little. It seem like today the website of The Pirate Bay is being put back online. Things are a little slow, but the site is there, available once again for people world-wide to enjoy. Does this mean that sites like The Pirate Bay are here to stay? It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days, when TPB fills in the missing details about what happened, and the **AA's have their say.

Microsoft is preparing a third beta, to be released some time in August. The extended beta period seems to have been prompted by compatibility issues that users have found with the first two IE 7 betas. One such issue, described in great detail on Microsoft's IEBlog, involved a problem where the browser would sometimes reload CAPTCHA images (character recognition tests used to fool spambots) when a network connection was idle:
Eric Lawrence of Microsoft stated that "for compatibility reasons, we're going to revert to IE6 behavior for IE7 Beta 3 to prevent this exact issue."
The Beta 3 release is expected to fix problems with some of the new features, such as the integrated RSS reader. Beta 3 will add an ability to control whether or not an article is marked as read. However, don't expect any major interface changes. According to an interview with IE 7 developers, there will be no new abilities to customize the interface, for example to put buttons and menus in customizable locations.
"Unfortunately, extensibility in IE7 is not where we want it to be," said Microsoft's Max Stevens, lead program manager in charge of IE 7's user interface. "We don't expect there to be many changes between now and ship, though this is definitely an area we're investigating for our next release."
The final release of IE 7 is expected to be some time this winter, and Microsoft has promised continual updates each year thereafter, starting with IE8, which will contain new networking and rendering features

03/06/2006 - Microsoft to Drop PDF Support in Office 2007 - Amid threats of a lawsuit from Adobe, Microsoft acknowledged Friday that it would remove support for saving files in PDF from Office 2007, as well as dropping its own rival format XPS from the productivity suite and Windows Vista.
The changes follow a breakdown of talks between the two technology giants after Microsoft announced last year it would include native PDF publishing with the release of Office 2007. The feature has long been a top request from customers, the company said at the time, and other office suites have the capability.
But Adobe was unhappy with the move and a dispute has been brewing for four months, Microsoft's lead counsel Brad Smith said Friday. Although PDF claims to be an open format and is integrated into OpenOffice and Apple's Mac OS X operating system, Adobe apparently sees Office 2007 as a real threat to its business.

ATi is expected to announce their most powerful Crossfire chipset, the RD600, in coming days. Temporarily dubbed the ATi Xpress 3200 Intel Edition, the chipset will provide support for Intel's new Conroe processor.
This is no "Joe consumer" chipset, however. Sporting a 1333MHz FSB, Dual Channel DDR2-1066, and independent memory clocking, this is one for the hardcore enthusiasts with some cash to spare. It gets better. The RD600 also has 3 PCIe slots; two for Crossfire ready graphics cards and one for a physics acceleration card. Throw two X1800 or X1900 cards in there and the system will automatically increase the FSB of the PCIe slots from the stock 100MHz to between 125MHz and 150MHz.
The RD600 is expected to be released later this summer.

02/06/2006 - HP Mistakenly Distributes Drivers Infected with Virus - Hewlett-Packard yesterday pulled a printer driver from its Web site after security vendor BitDefender reported that the software was infected with the same computer virus that infected HP's drivers more than five years ago.
A BitDefender partner notified the security vendor of the infected driver software earlier this week, and the company's security researchers soon determined that it had the same Funlove virus that had plagued HP in December 2000.
BitDefender notified HP of the problem on Wednesday and the infected printer driver was removed from HP's Web site early Thursday, said BitDefender spokesman Vitor Souza.
Until then, the virus was being distributed with the Korean version of the Windows 95/98 driver for HP's Officejet g85 All-in-One printer. HP no longer sells the all-in-one printer, and the current antivirus products are able to block it. So while the oversight is an embarrassment for HP, it's unlikely that many users were affected by Funlove.

02/06/2006 - Introducing the Wall Jack PC - We know you all want a wall-socket PC right? Who wouldnÂ’t? This little guy has been in development for about a year now.
The "Jack PC" is a low to medium power PC. The unit can be powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) and sports a 500MHz AMD RISC processor, 64MM flash memory, 128MB of RAM and runs Windows CE. It is designed to be used as a thin client with a server (and is quite dependant upon one). It would be neat to see one of these things running *nix. I'm sure it will be done eventually. The tech scene can get anything running on *nix. I think my toaster runs Red Hat right now.
The average low power computer consumes about 80 watts. The Jack PC consumes only 5 watts of power keeping both the cost (to run) and heat of the unit down. I wonder if we could make this into a HTPC somehow.
Priced at (about) $392, you could really buy an entire PC for that. However, if small footprints and minimal power consumption is something you are after, this might be perfect for you. You should be able to pick one up sometime mid-June.

02/06/2006 - $100 Laptop Price Hike - Nicholas Negroponte showed off the latest prototypes of the fabled $100 PC. It's not longer a $100 PC, however. The ruggedized, two pound Linux desktop (Fedora) system, with mesh networking will sell for about $130 to $140 ([before] shipping) to governments starting in April 2007. Negroponte expects to reach the $100 price point by the end of 2008.
The colorful system can turn into a tablet, and Negroponte said that it "will run like a bat out of hell." Pricing depends on how much RAM, but key is the display, he added. "It has to be sunlight readable. That won't be done until August/September."
Then there will be a beauty contest among three systems and go into manufacturing for shipping, he said. Current seven countries are evaluating the system. The most enthusiastic are Nigeria, Brazil, Thailand and Argentina. In addition, China, India and Egypt have shown interest, as well as Russia, Mexico and Indonesia. Negroponte said that manufacturing has to reach 5 to 6 million to get scale pricing.

02/06/2006 - New TFT LCD 1.48mm Thick from LG - Samsung may try to unofficially claim the throne as the king of slim, but their fellow Korean companies aren't going to give up without a fight. One of their biggest competitors, in the cell phone market anyways, is LG Electronics, and it seems that LG wants a big piece of the ultra-thin pie for themselves. The Korean manufacturer has just unveiled a new TFT LCD display that is a mere 1.48mm thick, or about 0.058-inches for those of you who aren't metrically inclined.
Showcased in both 2.0 and 2.2-inch sizes, this new display will handle QVGA resolutions without a hitch, and they're proposing various applications. I'm sure you can guess a few of these, like portable gaming machines, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and multimedia players. If integrated into a new batch of mobile phones, along with some other slim stuff, Samsung may have quite a battle for themselves when it comes to maintaining that they also have the "world's thinnest".
No word on when the TFT LCDs will be available, and whether they plan on selling the technology for other companies' uses.
