02/06/2006 - HP Mistakenly Distributes Drivers Infected with Virus - Hewlett-Packard yesterday pulled a printer driver from its Web site after security vendor BitDefender reported that the software was infected with the same computer virus that infected HP's drivers more than five years ago.
A BitDefender partner notified the security vendor of the infected driver software earlier this week, and the company's security researchers soon determined that it had the same Funlove virus that had plagued HP in December 2000.
BitDefender notified HP of the problem on Wednesday and the infected printer driver was removed from HP's Web site early Thursday, said BitDefender spokesman Vitor Souza.
Until then, the virus was being distributed with the Korean version of the Windows 95/98 driver for HP's Officejet g85 All-in-One printer. HP no longer sells the all-in-one printer, and the current antivirus products are able to block it. So while the oversight is an embarrassment for HP, it's unlikely that many users were affected by Funlove.

02/06/2006 - Introducing the Wall Jack PC - We know you all want a wall-socket PC right? Who wouldnÂ’t? This little guy has been in development for about a year now.
The "Jack PC" is a low to medium power PC. The unit can be powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) and sports a 500MHz AMD RISC processor, 64MM flash memory, 128MB of RAM and runs Windows CE. It is designed to be used as a thin client with a server (and is quite dependant upon one). It would be neat to see one of these things running *nix. I'm sure it will be done eventually. The tech scene can get anything running on *nix. I think my toaster runs Red Hat right now.
The average low power computer consumes about 80 watts. The Jack PC consumes only 5 watts of power keeping both the cost (to run) and heat of the unit down. I wonder if we could make this into a HTPC somehow.
Priced at (about) $392, you could really buy an entire PC for that. However, if small footprints and minimal power consumption is something you are after, this might be perfect for you. You should be able to pick one up sometime mid-June.

02/06/2006 - $100 Laptop Price Hike - Nicholas Negroponte showed off the latest prototypes of the fabled $100 PC. It's not longer a $100 PC, however. The ruggedized, two pound Linux desktop (Fedora) system, with mesh networking will sell for about $130 to $140 ([before] shipping) to governments starting in April 2007. Negroponte expects to reach the $100 price point by the end of 2008.
The colorful system can turn into a tablet, and Negroponte said that it "will run like a bat out of hell." Pricing depends on how much RAM, but key is the display, he added. "It has to be sunlight readable. That won't be done until August/September."
Then there will be a beauty contest among three systems and go into manufacturing for shipping, he said. Current seven countries are evaluating the system. The most enthusiastic are Nigeria, Brazil, Thailand and Argentina. In addition, China, India and Egypt have shown interest, as well as Russia, Mexico and Indonesia. Negroponte said that manufacturing has to reach 5 to 6 million to get scale pricing.

02/06/2006 - New TFT LCD 1.48mm Thick from LG - Samsung may try to unofficially claim the throne as the king of slim, but their fellow Korean companies aren't going to give up without a fight. One of their biggest competitors, in the cell phone market anyways, is LG Electronics, and it seems that LG wants a big piece of the ultra-thin pie for themselves. The Korean manufacturer has just unveiled a new TFT LCD display that is a mere 1.48mm thick, or about 0.058-inches for those of you who aren't metrically inclined.
Showcased in both 2.0 and 2.2-inch sizes, this new display will handle QVGA resolutions without a hitch, and they're proposing various applications. I'm sure you can guess a few of these, like portable gaming machines, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and multimedia players. If integrated into a new batch of mobile phones, along with some other slim stuff, Samsung may have quite a battle for themselves when it comes to maintaining that they also have the "world's thinnest".
No word on when the TFT LCDs will be available, and whether they plan on selling the technology for other companies' uses.

02/06/2006 - Glitch Delays AOL E-Mail - Millions of AOL users encountered delays sending and receiving e-mail Thursday as the company worked to identify and fix a software glitch. AOL spokesman Nicholas Graham said the company was investigating the cause of the problems, which began late in the morning.
He said millions of messages were stuck in a queue and all would eventually get delivered. But as technicians tried to fix the problem, he said, users faced difficulties accessing their accounts, particularly through AOL's Web interfaces.
The glitch affected both AOL.com e-mail for paid subscribers and its free AIM.com offering, which the Time Warner Inc. Internet unit began offering a year ago to lure nonsubscribers to its ad-supported sites.

02/06/2006 - US Border Cams Available to the Public - A US state is to enlist web users in its fight against illegal immigration by offering live surveillance footage of the Mexican border on the internet. The plan will allow web users worldwide to watch Texas' border with Mexico and phone the authorities if they spot any apparently illegal crossings. Texas Governor Rick Perry said the cameras would focus on "hot-spots and common routes" used to enter the US.
The Texas governor announced his plans for streaming the border surveillance camera footage over the internet at a meeting of police officials on Thursday. "A stronger border is what Americans want and it's what our security demands and that is what Texas is going to deliver," Mr Perry said.
The cameras will cost $5m (£2.7m) to install and will be trained on sections of the 1,000-mile (1,600km) border known to be favoured by illegal immigrants. Web users who spot an apparently illegal crossing will be able to alert the authorities by telephoning a number free of charge.

02/06/2006 - Adobe Planning Antitrust Suit Against Microsoft? - The Wall Street Journal reported on June 2 that Adobe is poised to launch an antitrust suit in Europe against Microsoft, following the break-down of four-month-long talks over Microsoft's Office 2007 PDF plans.
Microsoft announced in October 2005 that it was building into Office 2007 a PDF export capability, following requests for such a feature by its customers. But according to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is now planning to remove that feature, at the request of Adobe. Adobe also sought to get Microsoft to charge for the export-to-PDF capability, but so far Microsoft is not planning to do so, according to the Journal.
Microsoft said last fall that Office 2007 would be able to output PDF documents compatible with any PDF viewer that supports version 1.4 of the public Adobe PDF specification. Office 2007 PDF documents were expected to be accessible to screen readers, the company said. Microsoft SharePoint-related products also were set to be able to index PDF documents for use in enterprise content management scenarios, Microsoft added.

02/06/2006 - BBC Pledge to Show World Cup Games Online - The BBC, who struggled to even broadcast online audio commentary of the last World Cup, will be showing their coverage of this year's tournament online.
For the first time ever users in the UK will be able to access the broadband-only stream of the action from Germany in what seems to be a trend-setter for future events. Similarly, Wimbledon will be broadcast online and the BBC has revealed it has the broadband broadcast rights to the next two World Cup competitions.
The BBC Sport website will show all of the group games the BBC has the rights to broadcast, as well as England's quarter and semi-final games should they reach that stage.
BBC Head of Sport Roger Mosey blogged: "From Germany 2006 there'll be all the BBC games streamed live in video; every single match streamed in audio; and then video highlights on-demand, again for every game."
"We may not get all of this right, but our aim is that the BBC should be the most modern provider of content as well as the one with the strongest traditions," he said.
The decision is an interesting move from the BBC which holds the title as the world's biggest public service broadcaster. Despite UK users paying their licence fees to own a television tuner, more and more content is now online for which you don't strictly need a licence.

02/06/2006 - Apple Computer Recycling Program Begins - Apple has activated its previously announced free computer take-back program, offering to recycle old computers for US customers when they buy a new Mac.
While it does not yet offer this service in its other global markets, in the US the company has begun offering a service in which the online and high-street Apple retail stores will recycle old PCs for new Mac buyers, regardless of the manufacturer.
Customers who use the scheme are sent an email with instructions and a label for free shipping and recycling. They just need to pack their kit up and attach the label provided. All equipment received by the program is recycled within the US, the company claims. No hazardous material is shipped overseas.
Apple also claimed its recycling programs have processed more than 21 million pounds of electronics worldwide since 1994. It also subsidises an iPod recycling program across its US retail stores, providing environmentally friendly disposal of any unwanted iPod and a 10 per cent discount on the purchase of a new iPod.
There's also a free drop-off recycling service for consumers who live close enough to its Cupertino HQ to drop kit off.

01/06/2006 - Email Viruses Reach New Low While Spam Reaches New High - May of 2006 gave us not one, but two new email records. The first record may surprise you a bit. Emails containing malicious programs (viruses) reached an all time low, accounting for a minute 0.73% of total email traffic, according to the figures released by the security firm, BlackSpider Technologies. On the flip side, however, spam mail accounted for 87.4% of email traffic, also setting a new record, albeit not as positive of a record as the first.
There is an explanation behind the abnormally high spam record, though. In the UK, between May 21 and 23, over 250 million spam emails were sent by computers that had previously been infected by a virus. Combine that with the recent controversial shutdown of Blue Security, and we have one huge reminder that the spam problem continues to worsen, seemingly with each day that passes.
