02/06/2006 - BBC Pledge to Show World Cup Games Online - The BBC, who struggled to even broadcast online audio commentary of the last World Cup, will be showing their coverage of this year's tournament online.
For the first time ever users in the UK will be able to access the broadband-only stream of the action from Germany in what seems to be a trend-setter for future events. Similarly, Wimbledon will be broadcast online and the BBC has revealed it has the broadband broadcast rights to the next two World Cup competitions.
The BBC Sport website will show all of the group games the BBC has the rights to broadcast, as well as England's quarter and semi-final games should they reach that stage.
BBC Head of Sport Roger Mosey blogged: "From Germany 2006 there'll be all the BBC games streamed live in video; every single match streamed in audio; and then video highlights on-demand, again for every game."
"We may not get all of this right, but our aim is that the BBC should be the most modern provider of content as well as the one with the strongest traditions," he said.
The decision is an interesting move from the BBC which holds the title as the world's biggest public service broadcaster. Despite UK users paying their licence fees to own a television tuner, more and more content is now online for which you don't strictly need a licence.

02/06/2006 - Apple Computer Recycling Program Begins - Apple has activated its previously announced free computer take-back program, offering to recycle old computers for US customers when they buy a new Mac.
While it does not yet offer this service in its other global markets, in the US the company has begun offering a service in which the online and high-street Apple retail stores will recycle old PCs for new Mac buyers, regardless of the manufacturer.
Customers who use the scheme are sent an email with instructions and a label for free shipping and recycling. They just need to pack their kit up and attach the label provided. All equipment received by the program is recycled within the US, the company claims. No hazardous material is shipped overseas.
Apple also claimed its recycling programs have processed more than 21 million pounds of electronics worldwide since 1994. It also subsidises an iPod recycling program across its US retail stores, providing environmentally friendly disposal of any unwanted iPod and a 10 per cent discount on the purchase of a new iPod.
There's also a free drop-off recycling service for consumers who live close enough to its Cupertino HQ to drop kit off.

01/06/2006 - Email Viruses Reach New Low While Spam Reaches New High - May of 2006 gave us not one, but two new email records. The first record may surprise you a bit. Emails containing malicious programs (viruses) reached an all time low, accounting for a minute 0.73% of total email traffic, according to the figures released by the security firm, BlackSpider Technologies. On the flip side, however, spam mail accounted for 87.4% of email traffic, also setting a new record, albeit not as positive of a record as the first.
There is an explanation behind the abnormally high spam record, though. In the UK, between May 21 and 23, over 250 million spam emails were sent by computers that had previously been infected by a virus. Combine that with the recent controversial shutdown of Blue Security, and we have one huge reminder that the spam problem continues to worsen, seemingly with each day that passes.

01/06/2006 - WDDM Overhaul On The Way - Microsoft is to overhaul Windows’ graphic driver model after realising that the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.0 — which will ship with Vista — needs improvement in the way it shares GPU resources between programs and Windows itself.
Steve Pronovost of MicrosoftÂ’s DirectX team disclosed at WinHEC in Seattle last week that although the WDDM 1.0 introduces some rudimentary task scheduling for GPUs, a new generation of GPU hardware and a major architectural change to the way Windows deals with video cards will be required.
He said that the trouble with WDDM 1.0 is that once one program is using the GPU, other programs are shut out until the process completes. In Vista, that can cause less fluid rendering of on-screen graphics, if multiple programs are trying to use GPU resources at once.
Until now, the inability to share GPU resources hasn’t been an obvious problem under Windows XP, because XP uses GDI — a 2D graphics system — to draw windows and operating system interface elements. In general, only 3D games and other major grahics apps use GPU resources, and users only run one such app at a time, he said.
However, inadequate GPU sharing is a problem for Windows Vista, because it uses the GPU to draw all elements of VistaÂ’s new Aero interface, and more generally there is a trend towards using the massive computing power in GPUs to process an array of non-graphics tasks as well.

01/06/2006 - Ubuntu Linux 6.06 Released - Ubuntu, which has become one of the world's most popular Linux distributions in recent years, launched its latest version on June 1 following months of intense testing. The new release is titled
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Long Term Support), and has a specific emphasis on the needs of large organisations with both desktop and server versions.
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS introduces functionality that simplifies common Linux server deployment processes. For system administrators setting up large numbers of web, mail and related servers, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS offers the fastest and most consistent path to deployment, combined with the availability of global commercial support where needed.
"Ubuntu has a reputation for working well out of the box on desktops, and we have worked to bring that same ease of deployment and configuration to the server marketplace" said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu project.
"Based on our analysis of the ways people were already deploying Ubuntu on servers, we have aimed to streamline their experience while expanding the range of software available to people deploying Ubuntu in the data centre."
The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Philosophy: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

01/06/2006 - Misleading Dell TV advert banned - Dell Computers has been banned from showing a television advert that misleads customers over the price of one of its PC systems. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found that the ad breached Committee of Advertising Practice broadcast rule 5.1 on misleading advertising and upheld the complaint against Dell by a member of the public. The decision was taken despite the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) testifying on Dell's behalf that in its opinion the ad was not misleading. The advert featured a son listing the features of a Dell PC to his father, including the phrase:
"Well, it's got a P4 3.46GHz processor, 256MB PCI Express Graphics, 5.1 surround sound speakers."
The scene then changed to show the father sitting at his computer followed by a shot of a Dell sales assistant and an advert for the Dell Dimension 1100 which was £489 but now costs £399. The customer complained that the advert implied that the Dell Dimension 1100 PC had the specifications listed by the son, when in fact it did not. The BACC said that the father and son sequence was separate to the second part of the ad and that the PC offer at the end clearly listed what was included in the package. However, the ASA was not convinced and told Dell not to show the advert again in its current form.

01/06/2006 - AMD: New Socket For Two Dual-Core Processors - Advanced Micro Devices is going to fire back at Intel today in the enthusiast PC market. The Sunnyvale company will unveil a new socket for high-end computers today that will allow it to put two dual-core microprocessors side by side in a PC. The new 4x4 socket will help it compete for the speed crown with Intel, which is poised to launch its new Conroe desktop microprocessors in July.
"This is something we have worked on for a while based on customer feedback," said Brent Barry, director of brand marketing for AMD's FX series of gamer chips.
It's like Gillette adding four razor blades to its razors now. How many is enough? It could get confusing for gamers. But the techies will sort it out, much the same way they have with the Nvidia SLI and ATI Crossfire dual graphics cards: more is better.
While Intel's Conroe chips will allegedly take the performance crown from AMD's own dual-core FX series of microprocessors, AMD can claim leadership in terms of putting four cores into a single PC, allowing for more tasks to be done in parallel. Patrick Moorhead, vice president of global channel marketing, said the new socket would ship in the second half of 2006 and target the high-end gamer segment, which usually means high-priced.

01/06/2006 - U.S. Poultry Experts Use Google Earth to Help Fight Bird Flu - With the dreaded bird flu expected to hit the United States this coming summer, poultry experts are already making plans on how to quarantine the virus as quickly and effectively as possible. By mapping out every single poultry farm and the entire surrounding area, they hope to be able to react quickly when an infection is reported and create a "buffer zone" around the originating farm. A lot of work, without a doubt.
However, in these modern times, these experts have one very handy tool at their disposal: Google Earth. In a recent interview with Reuters, Sherrill Davison, a professor of avian medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, says, "We began using Google Earth to help us locate poultry farms more exactly. In the past we knew the chicken house was on a parcel of land but now we can zoom in and tell exactly where on the property it is." That ability to quickly and accurately locate the farm's location may be the very difference between a massive outbreak and a successful quarantine.

01/06/2006 - Online Gambler in Washington State? Fold Now or Face Felony - Beginning next month, Washington residents who play poker or make other types of wagers on the Internet will be committing a Class C felony, equivalent under the law to possessing child pornography, threatening the governor or torturing an animal.
Although the head of the state Gambling Commission says it is unlikely that individual online gamblers will be targeted for arrest, the new law carries stiff penalties: as much as five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

01/06/2006 - AMD-ATI Merger? - Forbes reports
Advanced Micro Devices may be looking to buy graphics company
ATI Technologies, a move that would benefit the overall graphics industry, according to RBC Capital Markets.
"The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years," wrote analyst Apjit Walia in a note to investors Wednesday. "We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics."
With the release of AMD Live!, AMD seem set to expand their horizons and tackle Intel in the desktop space full on this year. Dell are due to ship machines with AMD chips in them and a coupling with ATI could mean some interesting prospects for AMD for gaming and performance based systems.
Intels june quarter isn't going too well with revenues down 10% and the next quarter is set to look worse. As Intel starts cutting chip prices to gain market share back will this help in the long term if a partnership with ATI is on the horizon?
We have contacted both companies for an official response but at the time of writing have received no official response regarding the rumours.
