31/05/2006 - Firefox Integrates Anti-phishing Technology - Mozilla has reached the latest development milestone for its next-generation Firefox 2.0 "Bon Echo" browser with a little anti-phishing help from Google.
Anti-phishing capability, which Mozilla has branded "Safe Browsing," is one of the marquee features in Firefox 2.0 and one of the reasons a third alpha is necessary. Now baked into Firefox 2.0 alpha 3, Google Safe Browsing is triple-licensed under the Mozilla Public License (MPL) 1.1, the GPL 2.0 and the LGLP.
Safe Browsing inspects a visited site against a regularly updated list of known phishing sites. The list of phishing sites may be downloaded automatically within the browser or can optionally be checked against Google's online list of known miscreants. IE Internet Explorer 7 will also have a form of anti-phishing capability.
The most recent report from the Anti Phishing Working Group (APWG) found that there were 11,121 unique phishing attacks in April 2006, which is the highest-ever number for that metric from the APWG.
In related news, Mozilla is expected to update its current stable 1.5.x branch as early as tomorrow with a 1.5.0.4 security and stability update.

31/05/2006 - Symantec Names Genesis 'Norton 360' - Symantec today announced that its upcoming consumer PC security service will be branded Norton 360. The security service will include online identity theft protection, backup and PC tune-up capabilities.
Norton 360, previously codenamed Genesis, is part of SymantecÂ’s broader vision for the next generation of online security, coined Security 2.0. 360 is Symantec's response to Microsoft's recently released Windows Live OneCare.
“Online threats are sophisticated and rapidly changing. We’re committed to staying ahead of those threats and keeping consumers safe,” said Enrique Salem, senior vice president, consumer products and solutions, Symantec Corp. “Today’s consumers want a simple solution that keeps them safe online, without having to decipher technical jargon or keep track of back-ups. They just want assurance that their information and activities are safe. That’s what Norton 360 will do.”
Norton 360 will be delivered as an all-in-one service, with automatically installed updates. The service will provide data protection through automated online back-up and online transaction security, where new tools will help protect consumers from phishing scams and crimeware.
The beta program will begin with a managed beta and will then enter public beta in the summer. The beta program, which will include email and chat support, will provide Symantec with overall user feedback and specific testing of the new online transaction security functionality.

31/05/2006 - Skype Software to Ship on Dell Laptops - Skype's voice over Internet Protocol software that allows people to talk for free over the Internet will ship on Dell's new XPS notebooks.
The Skype software will be offered as part of Dell's audio/video communications package on the new XPS M1210 and M2010 laptops, Skype announced Wednesday. The communications package also includes an integrated Webcam and microphone, noise isolation ear buds, and a mobile broadband antenna.
"This gives Dell customers a simple way to use the Internet to talk to their friends and family from home, in the office or on the go," Don Albert, director of Business Development for Skype North America, said in a statement.

The Office Productivity Applications group which will be led by Antoine Leblond and will have responsibility for the Office client teams and shared services. The Office Business Platform group will be headed up by and will have responsibility for SharePoint, Groove and Project.
"As (Microsoft) considered the approaches to filling Steven's role as lead of Office development, they concluded that the organization would benefit from a slightly different model for Office engineering leadership moving forward," Microsoft said in a statement.

31/05/2006 - Google CEO: No Plans to Build a Browser - During a conference call with Wall Street analysts Wednesday, Google CEO Eric Schmidt dismissed speculation that the company aimed to tie together its Web search and other services to compete with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, the world's dominant Web browser.
"It looks like people have some good browser choices already," Schmidt said. "We would not build a browser for the fun of building a browser," he added.
Google encourages its customers to use a variety of alternatives to Internet Explorer, particularly the open-source Firefox browser. It also has partnerships to encourage the use of the Safari browser among Apple Computer Inc. customers, Norway's Opera Software ASA, which makes browsers for computers and phones, among several other browser alternatives, he said.
However, Schmidt left the door open to developing a browser if it saw some clear utility to users that was not otherwise being met in the market. "We would only do something ... if we thought there was a real end-user benefit," he said.

31/05/2006 - Apple Sticks it to Samsung Somewhat - Apple may have withdrawn some of its iPod processor orders from Samsung, following that company's indiscreet revelation that it had secured the business.
Apple likes to keep it's partners under wraps. In the past it has delayed releasing products because a partner has jumped the gun. It did so in 2001, when it delayed releasing a new computer because ATI revealed itself to be making the graphics cards for that machine.
A Samsung executive last month generated international publicity - and sent Apple's long-term chip partner PortalPlayer's shares into freefall - when he revealed his firm to have grabbed Apple's business.
Now, EE Times reports Apple to have taken the business away from the over-ardent Samsung, choosing instead to maintain its relationship with SigmaTel. The report notes comments by Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Craig Berger to back-up its claims.
At the least, the report indicates SigmaTel has held onto its contract to supply chips for the iPod shuffle.

31/05/2006 - Numerous Parts of JPEG Patent Rejected - Back in February of this year, the Public Patent Foundation requested that the U.S. Patent and Trademark office re-examine a patent issued to Forgent Networks for the JPEG picture format; a patent used to obtain upwards of $105 million worth of license agreements. The examination was completed with results being issued last Thursday. Out of the 47 parts of the original patent, 19 were rejected because of their broad nature. One such part, the first, describes "A method for processing digital signals ... to reduce the amount of data utilized." Broad indeed.
Both sides, Forgent and the Public Patent Foundation, seem to be pleased with the results. Forgent insists, however, that it will defend the rejected parts.

"The main thing is Disney chose us to be first for them to go out with electronic sell-through" on the Internet, said Bruce Eisen, president of CinemaNow. Echoing comments made earlier, Ballmer said Microsoft must invest heavily in the opportunities it sees. Even an established product like its flagship Windows operating system, which includes the Internet Explorer browser, "has to be watered periodically," Ballmer said.
"There's a lot of innovation still coming in Internet browsing and hardware," Ballmer told investors at a conference organized by Sanford C. Bernstein and Co. LLC. "If we don't keep Windows fresh, Windows will not continue to flourish." Microsoft is currently working on new versions of its browser, Internet Explorer 7, and operating system, Windows Vista. The consumer version of Vista is expected to hit retail shelves in January.
