29/05/2006 - House panel votes for Net neutrality - By a 20-13 vote Thursday that partially followed party lines, the House Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would require broadband providers to abide by strict Net neutrality principles, meaning that their networks must be operated in a "nondiscriminatory" manner. All 14 Democrats on the committee (joined by six Republicans) supported the measure, while 13 Republicans opposed it.
That vote is a surprise victory for Internet companies such as Amazon.com, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo that had lobbied fiercely in the last few months for stricter laws to ensure that Verizon, AT&T and other broadband providers could not create a "fast lane" reserved for video or other high-priority content of their choice.
In an unusual twist, many members of the committee said they werevoting for the legislation not because of strong concerns over Netneutrality--but instead because of a turf battle. They said they wereworried that a competing proposal already approved by a different committee last month would diminish their own influence in the future.

28/05/2006 - Internet Journalists are Protected by Law, Court Rules - In a decision that could set the tone for journalism in the digital age, a California appeals court ruled Friday that bloggers, like traditional reporters, have the right to keep their sources confidential.
A panel of three judges said in a 69-page decision that a group of bloggers did not have to divulge their sources to Cupertino's Apple Computer Inc., contending that the same laws that protect traditional journalists, the First Amendment and California's Shield Law, also apply to bloggers.
Siding with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a high-tech legal group that had filed the appeal, the judges said that Apple could not force the bloggers to reveal the identity of the person -- presumably an Apple employee -- who had leaked details about a digital-music-related project code-named "Asteroid" to a number of bloggers. The details of the product release were published on several Web logs, Internet sites commonly referred to as blogs, including Jason O'Grady's PowerPage, which reports on Apple news.
"This was a huge win for the First Amendment and for journalists who publish online," said Lauren Gelman, associate director for Stanford's Center for Internet and Society, who filed a brief supporting the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "The court recognized that in the modern era, one way journalists publish information is through the Internet."

28/05/2006 - Blue Frog Reborn - First there was Blue Frog, a community antispam effort that stopped operating last week after Blue Security, the company that started the project, came under a withering denial-of-service attack.
Out of the ashes comes Black Frog, part of a project that is apparently willing to become a flag bearer in the fight against spam. The project, dubbed Okopipi, is developing the Black Frog antispam software as an open-source project, according to the group's wiki.
"This project aims to become a distributed replacement of antispam software Blue Frog," the Okopipi wiki states. The project merges two separate efforts--Okopipi and Black Frog--that arose after the demise of Blue Frog.
Blue Security waged a sort of do-it-yourself spamming campaign against the spammers. It said that more than 500,000 customers downloaded its Blue Frog software, which automatically sent replies back to mass e-mails. If all of these customers' systems responded, the spammers' systems would be overwhelmed.
But the Web sites of Blue Security and some of the company's partners were knocked out last month by a massive distributed denial-of-service attack. In such an attack, scores of computers try to continuously log onto Web sites, in an effort to overtax the servers.

28/05/2006 - Dell Deal Bolsters Google Search - Google has taken a major step towards challenging the dominance of Microsoft by signing a deal with Dell. The agreement means millions of Dell computers will leave the factories with Google software already installed on them.
The software includes several personal computer applications, a Google toolbar and a co-branded homepage. This could pose a serious challenge to the hold Microsoft has enjoyed on 90% of the world's computers.
The Seattle software giant has enjoyed a significant advantage over rivals, with computers automatically defaulting to Microsoft products. In practice, most people stay with the default programs and search technology that comes with their machine.

27/05/2006 - Microsoft Explains 'Internet Explorer 7+' - Microsoft has announced that its Vista-bundled browser will be renamed to 'Internet Explorer 7+' to help differentiate between the separate build for Windows XP. Public builds of Windows Vista have featured the new 'IE7+' branding for a while now, but up till now no clarification was provided by Microsoft. Late yesterday the folks over at the IEBlog posted the following:
"While all versions of IE7 are built from the same code base, there are some important differences in IE7+, most significantly the addition of Windows Vista-only features like Protected Mode, Parental Controls, and improved Network Diagnostics. These features take advantage of big changes in Windows Vista and weren’t practical to bring downlevel. The IE7+ naming gives us an easy way to refer to this version. (“The version of IE7 in Vista” doesn’t roll off the tongue as easily…)"
The 'user-agent strings' for each of the browsers will be different as well. Users of IE7 on Windows XP will be identified as 'Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)' while IE7+ on Vista will be 'Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)'

27/05/2006 - Microsoft in Cautious Acquisition Discussion with eBay - In an article published on Friday, New York Post writer Tim Arango claims that Microsoft has been in discussions with eBay for several weeks about the possibility of acquiring the online auction giant. According to the article, sources claim that Microsoft would integrate eBay with its MSN portal. ItÂ’s no secret that Microsoft has recently been taking larger and more frequent strides to compete with search giant Google, who is also well known for its competitive diversification. Could this be the advantage that Microsoft is looking for?
The article also speculates that the Yahoo-eBay deal would not prevent Microsoft from pursuing the acquisition of eBay, but that it may make the discussions slow down while the legal teams go over any possible antitrust issues.

26/05/2006 - Microsoft Adds Ultimate Edition of Office 2007 - After already announcing plans for an Ultimate edition of Windows Vista, Microsoft confirmed this week that it also plans an Ultimate edition of Office 2007.
The new retail package, which was not part of the Office 2007 lineup announced back in February, will offer nearly all the components available to large businesses in one $679 product. A Microsoft representative said on Thursday that the new entrant in the lineup was "created as a result of customer feedback," but didn't offer more details on its origins.
Office Ultimate is similar to the enterprise edition that is available only to large businesses, and includes standards like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, along with Publisher, the OneNote note-taking software, the Groove collaboration suite, Access database and InfoPath forms software. Microsoft did not announce pricing for the enterprise edition, since it is only available for volume licensing customers.

26/05/2006 - Microsoft to Refine Vista's PC Rating Tool - Microsoft is retooling a PC rating feature in Windows Vista following criticism from hardware makers and others, an example that the next-generation operating system may not yet be ready for mass consumption.
The critique is that the current version of the Windows System Performance Rating feature could be "misleading," Brad Goldberg, general manager for Windows at Microsoft, said in an interview at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference.
The feature first appeared in a recent Vista preview release and is designed to help consumers when they first buy a PC and to determine which software and hardware works with a system. It looks at the processor, hard disk drive, memory and graphics capabilities and gives each a score, as well as a prominently displayed overall score.
