27/05/2006 - Microsoft Explains 'Internet Explorer 7+' - Microsoft has announced that its Vista-bundled browser will be renamed to 'Internet Explorer 7+' to help differentiate between the separate build for Windows XP. Public builds of Windows Vista have featured the new 'IE7+' branding for a while now, but up till now no clarification was provided by Microsoft. Late yesterday the folks over at the IEBlog posted the following:
"While all versions of IE7 are built from the same code base, there are some important differences in IE7+, most significantly the addition of Windows Vista-only features like Protected Mode, Parental Controls, and improved Network Diagnostics. These features take advantage of big changes in Windows Vista and weren’t practical to bring downlevel. The IE7+ naming gives us an easy way to refer to this version. (“The version of IE7 in Vista” doesn’t roll off the tongue as easily…)"
The 'user-agent strings' for each of the browsers will be different as well. Users of IE7 on Windows XP will be identified as 'Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)' while IE7+ on Vista will be 'Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)'

27/05/2006 - Microsoft in Cautious Acquisition Discussion with eBay - In an article published on Friday, New York Post writer Tim Arango claims that Microsoft has been in discussions with eBay for several weeks about the possibility of acquiring the online auction giant. According to the article, sources claim that Microsoft would integrate eBay with its MSN portal. ItÂ’s no secret that Microsoft has recently been taking larger and more frequent strides to compete with search giant Google, who is also well known for its competitive diversification. Could this be the advantage that Microsoft is looking for?
The article also speculates that the Yahoo-eBay deal would not prevent Microsoft from pursuing the acquisition of eBay, but that it may make the discussions slow down while the legal teams go over any possible antitrust issues.

26/05/2006 - Microsoft Adds Ultimate Edition of Office 2007 - After already announcing plans for an Ultimate edition of Windows Vista, Microsoft confirmed this week that it also plans an Ultimate edition of Office 2007.
The new retail package, which was not part of the Office 2007 lineup announced back in February, will offer nearly all the components available to large businesses in one $679 product. A Microsoft representative said on Thursday that the new entrant in the lineup was "created as a result of customer feedback," but didn't offer more details on its origins.
Office Ultimate is similar to the enterprise edition that is available only to large businesses, and includes standards like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, along with Publisher, the OneNote note-taking software, the Groove collaboration suite, Access database and InfoPath forms software. Microsoft did not announce pricing for the enterprise edition, since it is only available for volume licensing customers.

26/05/2006 - Microsoft to Refine Vista's PC Rating Tool - Microsoft is retooling a PC rating feature in Windows Vista following criticism from hardware makers and others, an example that the next-generation operating system may not yet be ready for mass consumption.
The critique is that the current version of the Windows System Performance Rating feature could be "misleading," Brad Goldberg, general manager for Windows at Microsoft, said in an interview at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference.
The feature first appeared in a recent Vista preview release and is designed to help consumers when they first buy a PC and to determine which software and hardware works with a system. It looks at the processor, hard disk drive, memory and graphics capabilities and gives each a score, as well as a prominently displayed overall score.

Symantec Corp.'s leading antivirus software, which protects some of the world's largest corporations and U.S. government agencies, suffers from a flaw that lets hackers seize control of computers to steal sensitive data, delete files or implant malicious programs, researchers said Thursday.
Researchers from eEye Digital Security Inc. of Aliso Viejo, Calif., discovered the vulnerability and provided evidence to Symantec engineers this week, said eEye's chief hacking officer, Marc Maiffret. "This is definitely wormable. Once exploited, you get a command shell that gives you complete access to the machine. You can remove, edit or destroy files at will," said eEye Digital Security spokesperson Mike Puterbaugh.
Symantec said it was investigating the issue but could not immediately corroborate the vulnerability. If confirmed, the threat to computer users would be severe because the security software is so widely used, and because no action is required by victims using the latest versions of Norton Antivirus to suffer a crippling attack over the Internet.

26/05/2006 - Apple Bundles New Dashboard Widget Tool With MacBooks - An easy way to create Dashboard widgets has reportedly begun shipping with new MacBooks. ThinkSecret claims the new application, Dashcode, is available within the version of Developer Tools that ships with Apple's new Intel-powered consumer notebooks. Its users can build custom Dashboard widgets, with the software automatically creating the bulk of the JavaScript code, the report claims.
Dashcode handles all aspects of widget management, from the front and back of a widget to its default image, icon, and more. An Inspector tool lets widget-builders set button shapes, sizes, and styles, backgrounds, colours, and so on. Debugging and search tools also feature in the application, the report claims.
While no mention of the new software is made on Apple's website, the widget-focused Dashboard Widgets website offers an in-depth look at some of the claims made of the software. The application is reportedly to be found in a users Developer>Applicatons after installing Developer Tools from the CD that ships with the MacBook.
A selection of images that claim to depict the application have also emerged, corresponding with leaked screenshots and rumors that were arising last November.

25/05/2006 - Shift Update, WinHEC 2006 and a Trip to ER - As most will have seen by now, we have upgraded Neowin to the new design called Shift. It is an effort by many people spanning almost a year of coding on our beta site. We addressed most if not all the requests made by members over the past 4 years. There is still work to do and we are looking into increasing the recent forum posts view to 10 but it requires a change in the design of the top area which, at the moment is under consideration.
Since the update we have made some improvements to the code by decreasing the header size. We removed defunkt meta tags and consolidated 6 javascripts into one file, that cuts the requests to our web server significantly.
We are aware of a problem with Internet Explorer displaying an 'Operation aborted' message when the main site loads. We think this has to do with an apache update that needs looking at because the message does not appear on the beta server, which is exactly the same code as here.
I am currently in Seattle for the WinHEC conference, Tom Warren is here with me which is a stroke of good luck because the update and a trip to Virginia Mason Hospital ER has cast a shadow on my visit due to illness, of which I am now on track for recovery thanks to the great help and advice of the medical staff at the hospital.
I should be fully recovered by the time I get to the next event in Amsterdam, which we'll be covering too as far as the NDA allows us.

25/05/2006 - Yahoo, eBay Join Forces - Internet powerhouses Yahoo Inc. and eBay Inc. are joining forces in an alliance that appears aimed at thwarting the recent expansions of online search engine leader Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Under the multi-year partnership announced Thursday, the Silicon Valley companies will draw upon each other's strengths in online advertising, payments and communications so they can connect with even more web surfers than they already do.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo operates the world's most visited website with 402 million users and ranks second in the lucrative search advertising market behind Google. B ut the deal between Yahoo and eBay seems likely to shift the competitive landscape.
Yahoo will become the exclusive provider of graphical advertising throughout eBay's website and will provide some search-generated ads, as well. Yahoo's brand and search engine will also be blended into an eBay toolbar that has been downloaded by four million users so far.
