25/05/2006 - Shift Update, WinHEC 2006 and a Trip to ER - As most will have seen by now, we have upgraded Neowin to the new design called Shift. It is an effort by many people spanning almost a year of coding on our beta site. We addressed most if not all the requests made by members over the past 4 years. There is still work to do and we are looking into increasing the recent forum posts view to 10 but it requires a change in the design of the top area which, at the moment is under consideration.

Since the update we have made some improvements to the code by decreasing the header size. We removed defunkt meta tags and consolidated 6 javascripts into one file, that cuts the requests to our web server significantly.

We are aware of a problem with Internet Explorer displaying an 'Operation aborted' message when the main site loads. We think this has to do with an apache update that needs looking at because the message does not appear on the beta server, which is exactly the same code as here.

I am currently in Seattle for the WinHEC conference, Tom Warren is here with me which is a stroke of good luck because the update and a trip to Virginia Mason Hospital ER has cast a shadow on my visit due to illness, of which I am now on track for recovery thanks to the great help and advice of the medical staff at the hospital.

I should be fully recovered by the time I get to the next event in Amsterdam, which we'll be covering too as far as the NDA allows us.

For now i hope you enjoy the update to the site and the coverage we have done on WinHEC in our Events Blog. Thanks for all your support.

25/05/2006 - Yahoo, eBay Join Forces - Internet powerhouses Yahoo Inc. and eBay Inc. are joining forces in an alliance that appears aimed at thwarting the recent expansions of online search engine leader Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Under the multi-year partnership announced Thursday, the Silicon Valley companies will draw upon each other's strengths in online advertising, payments and communications so they can connect with even more web surfers than they already do.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo operates the world's most visited website with 402 million users and ranks second in the lucrative search advertising market behind Google. B ut the deal between Yahoo and eBay seems likely to shift the competitive landscape.

Yahoo will become the exclusive provider of graphical advertising throughout eBay's website and will provide some search-generated ads, as well. Yahoo's brand and search engine will also be blended into an eBay toolbar that has been downloaded by four million users so far.

25/05/2006 - Nintendo Wii $250 USD or Less, 6 Million Units by March 2007 - Gamesindustry has the scoop that finally gives us a clue as to how much a Nintendo Wii will set us back come later this year. At a full-year financial report given recently by Nintendo's Yoshihiro Mori, it was announced that the system will retail for $250 USD or less when it is released in the fourth quarter of this year. They also will ship out 6 million units of the system by March of 2007.

Obviously this is in stark comparison to Sony's Playstation 3 which will release around the same time for literally double the price, if not more. Nintendo is banking on the low price point and innovative software and hardware that the Wii will offer to bring in new customers. Both Microsoft and Sony admitted that the Nintendo Wii would be viable as a "2nd console" and as such Nintendo could be in a position to capture a huge market share. By not getting involved in the escalating hardware war between Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo is in a unique position and can sit by and nab up everyone else who won't shell out $599 USD for a decked out Playstation 3 or even $399 for an Xbox 360.

Now while this is great news for Nintendo fans, I must also bring up some not so hot news on the Big N front that came out of that same financial report. Nintendo's annual operating profit fell 19% and this was due in part to the continued decline in Gamecube and GameBoy Advance demand, and also because of the startup costs for the Nintendo Wii itself. But there was also good news! Nintendo saw a 12.5% rise in its net profit, mostly due to the terrific demand for the Nintendo DS handheld. Nintendo aims to sell another 16 million DS units and over 70 million software units for the handheld this year, which would equate to a 22% increase in operating profit for this fiscal year.

All in all, great news today. We get a somewhat firm price point for the Wii. At least we know it won't cost over $250 USD or €195. We also know that the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance aren't doing that well for Nintendo, and the DS is making it up for them.

24/05/2006 - Ballmer: Vista Launch Could Slip Further - The launch of the consumer version of Windows Vista, Microsoft's new operating system, could be pushed back past the stated January launch date, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said today.

The operating system was due to be launched this year but in March the company said it wouldn't get broad release until January 2007. Ballmer said Wednesday that the planned January launch may slip further based on feedback from a beta release program and the product road-maps of hardware vendors.

"We think we are on track for shipping early in the year. We've talked about the month, but we get a chance to critically assess all of the feedback we'll get from this beta release then confirm or move [the launch date] a few weeks," he said at a news conference in Tokyo.

As Neowin reported at the start of the month, research group Gartner predicted something similar to this was going to happen based on Microsoft's past performance with Windows release dates.

24/05/2006 - Windows Vista Beta 2: Aftermath - Shortly after Microsoft released Vista Beta 2, the big hardware vendors released updated drivers for the general public to install on their test machines. NVidia has released nForce drivers (nForce 4 or greater) and Forceware drivers for their chipsets/video cards and ATI has just posted updated Catalyst drivers for their Radeon products.

Screenshot/video galleries are starting to hit the web as well:
If you missed the keynote addresses from this morning, Microsoft is providing on-demand access to them over here. Office 2007 Beta 2 can be downloaded using a nifty new software delivery manager over here. We've also got several staff members on the floor of WinHEC this year blogging live from the show. Our very own Creamhackered gave his preliminary rundown on Vista Beta 2 earlier today:

"Vista seems a little more responsive and stable from 5381. Nothing really different from that build but if youÂ’ve been waiting to run Vista on your main machine then you may want to wait a little longer until RC0, as this release still isnÂ’t at the stage where you could rely on it every day, especially on a mid-range PC."

23/05/2006 - NVIDIA Rolls Out nForce 500 Chipsets - NVIDIA has announced its new nForce 500 series core logic chipsets, sporting a wide array of new features and goodies for mainstream and enthusiast users alike. After appearing on roadmaps in months past as MCE55, the new chipsets are officially known as the 590, 570, and 550.

The new 590 SLI is NVIDIA's new high-end chipset, supporting dual x16 PCI-Express lanes and six 3.0Gbps SATA ports without the need of an additional third party controller. Also featured are dual Gigabit Ethernet controllers making use of a new feature known as DualNet, which can essentially team the controllers to function as a single 2Gbps controller.  Further networking improvements include hardware TCP/IP acceleration which takes load off the CPU, and FirstPacket technology which allows users to prioritize packets to their preference.  For example, a gamer may choose to push his game's packets through first to keep pings down while simultaneously uploading to an FTP server.

Further extending its list of features are Max Overclocking and LinkBoost technology, which are sure to excite enthusiasts always in search of new toys to tinker with. LinkBoost allows for a 25% increase in bandwidth over the x16 PCI-E lanes by linking one lane each to the nForce 590 SLI SPP and MCP, which are themselves connected by a 5x HTT, 10GB/sec link. Expect boards featuring this solution from the familiar names such as Asus, MSI, Abit, and others.

Next is the 570, which appears in both SLI and Ultra versions. The SLI version will run SLI setups in a 2x8 configuration much like standard nForce 4 SLI chipsets on Socket 939 and 754 platforms. With the exception of LinkBoost and Max Overclocking, the 570 series includes all the new features mentioned above at a lower price tag.

Last we have the 550, which is essentially the standard nForce 4 chipset with the addition of 3.0Gbps SATA support. Therefore this chipset does not have any of the extras included with the 590 and 570 series. This low-end chipset will handle the mainstream market, but still requires a discrete graphics card.
