23/05/2006 - NVIDIA Rolls Out nForce 500 Chipsets - NVIDIA has announced its new nForce 500 series core logic chipsets, sporting a wide array of new features and goodies for mainstream and enthusiast users alike. After appearing on roadmaps in months past as MCE55, the new chipsets are officially known as the 590, 570, and 550.
The new 590 SLI is NVIDIA's new high-end chipset, supporting dual x16 PCI-Express lanes and six 3.0Gbps SATA ports without the need of an additional third party controller. Also featured are dual Gigabit Ethernet controllers making use of a new feature known as
DualNet, which can essentially team the controllers to function as a single 2Gbps controller. Further networking improvements include hardware TCP/IP acceleration which takes load off the CPU, and FirstPacket technology which allows users to prioritize packets to their preference. For example, a gamer may choose to push his game's packets through first to keep pings down while simultaneously uploading to an FTP server.
Further extending its list of features are Max Overclocking and LinkBoost technology, which are sure to excite enthusiasts always in search of new toys to tinker with. LinkBoost allows for a 25% increase in bandwidth over the x16 PCI-E lanes by linking one lane each to the nForce 590 SLI SPP and MCP, which are themselves connected by a 5x HTT, 10GB/sec link. Expect boards featuring this solution from the familiar names such as Asus, MSI, Abit, and others.
Next is the 570, which appears in both SLI and Ultra versions. The SLI version will run SLI setups in a 2x8 configuration much like standard nForce 4 SLI chipsets on Socket 939 and 754 platforms. With the exception of LinkBoost and Max Overclocking, the 570 series includes all the new features mentioned above at a lower price tag.
Last we have the 550, which is essentially the standard nForce 4 chipset with the addition of 3.0Gbps SATA support. Therefore this chipset does not have any of the extras included with the 590 and 570 series. This low-end chipset will handle the mainstream market, but still requires a discrete graphics card.

23/05/2006 - WinHEC 2006: Bill Gates Keynote - The annual WinHEC conference is kicking off in Seattle this morning with a keynote address by Microsoft boss Bill Gates:
Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates will focus on how key technology investments are paving the way for innovative market opportunities and a shift to a new platform. Gates will also discuss the impact of the upcoming introductions of Microsoft Windows Vista, 2007 Office System, and Windows Server "Longhorn.”
Look for Gates to reveal additional details concerning the Beta 2 release of both Office 2007 and Windows Vista. Screenshots of Vista build 5384.2 have been spotted on several sites this morning, namely WinFuture.

23/05/2006 - Detaching printers for non-PC users - Presto Services plans to emerge from hiding on Tuesday and preview its new service at the D: All Things Digital conference next week. The service provides a photo printer made by Hewlett-Packard to the "lightly connected," and hooks them up to an online service managed by more connected relatives looking to share photos, said Joe Beninato, founder and chief executive officer of the new company.
The idea behind Presto comes from Beninato's attempts to set his mother up with a PC. "I bought her a PC with AOL, and she can't quite figure it out." E-mail messages bearing family photos often got lost among spam and other messages, and Beninato's mother wound up simply leaving the PC to collect dust, he said. So Presto has developed what it calls a "printing mailbox," basically a simple HP photo printer that users plug into a phone jack and a wall socket, Beninato said. That printer contains software that accesses an online mailbox set up by a more tech-savvy relative or friend. New snapshots can be e-mailed to the mailbox, and the service will take those photos and send them to the printer every so often.
No Internet service is required on behalf of the printer user, and Beninato promises that the device doesn't need any configuration. The company plans to announce pricing later this year when it launches the service, but users will have to purchase the printer and pay a monthly or annual service fee. Presto has received $10 million in funding from venture capital firms Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers and Clearstone Venture Partners.

22/05/2006 - Microsoft Tries Pay-As-You-Go Approach For Windows PCs - While Microsoft's Windows operating system and software is popular worldwide, its relatively high price puts it out of the financial reach of many in the developing world. As a result, pirated copies of Windows and Office are endemic in some parts of the world, with the percentage of PCs running pirated software approaching 90 percent in some countries.
Microsoft is trying a novel approach to deal with the problem of affordability: a pay-as-you-go model. Dubbed FlexGo, the plan operates much like a prepaid cellular phone. Consumers buy a FlexGo computer running Windows XP Home at a reduced price from a retailer, along with some prepaid access cards.
Under the FlexGo model, usage is timed. As PC usage reaches a predefined limit, the computer goes into a limited-access state until more time is added. Users can add more time by purchasing scratch-off prepaid cards and entering the numeric code contained on the card onto the PC. The process repeats until the PC's owner has purchased a predefined amount of time on the PC. Once that occurs, all usage restrictions are lifted as the user now owns the PC outright.

22/05/2006 - Wired Leaks NSA/AT&T Spying Documents - Wired news has published documents detailing AT&TÂ’s cooperation with the National Security Agency in spying on American citizens.
Former AT&T technician Mark Klein is the key witness in the Electronic Frontier Foundation's class-action lawsuit against the telecommunications company, which alleges that AT&T cooperated in an illegal National Security Agency domestic surveillance program. In a public statement Klein issued last month, he described the NSA's visit to an AT&T office. In an older, less-public statement recently acquired by Wired News, Klein goes into additional details of his discovery of an alleged surveillance operation in an AT&T building in San Francisco. Klein supports his claim by attaching excerpts of three internal company documents: a Dec. 10, 2002, manual titled "Study Group 3, LGX/Splitter Wiring, San Francisco," a Jan. 13, 2003, document titled "SIMS, Splitter Cut-In and Test Procedure" and a second "Cut-In and Test Procedure" dated Jan. 24, 2003.

22/05/2006 - US Government Sued Over .xxx Domain Rejection - The recent rejection of a dedicated .xxx domain for porn sites has prompted the company behind the plan, ICM Registry, to launch a legal attack against the US Department of Commerce. ICM claims that the Department of Commerce intervened in IcannÂ’s consideration of the .xxx domain proposal and exerted political influence to have the plan rejected. The lawsuit has been filed under a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in order to gain access to information being withheld by the Commerce Department.
ICM claims that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration has provided no explanation of the statutory basis and reasons for redacting and withholding documents relating to the consideration of the proposal. Furthermore, the company asserts that records show that, while the DoC lacked any official role in approving new domain names, it nevertheless decided to intervene in the Icann process.
