21/05/2006 - Samsung Prepping Hybrid Hard Drives - Samsung plans to demonstrate prototype flash-and-hard-disk hybrids next week at WinHEC, aiming to improve start/resume times and extend laptop battery life.
Samsung Electronics has found another use for all that flash memory it's manufacturing: packing it into hard drives. At next week's WinHEC 2006 conference, Samsung plans to demonstrate new Hybrid Hard Disk (HHD) storage devices, which combine a conventional magnetic platter storage with NAND flash memory.
The basic idea is that each hard disk has a cache of 128 or 256 MB of flash memory, with the idea of improving startup and resume times for notebook computers and other portable electronic devices which require hard disk storage, while simultaneously extending battery life by reducing the amount of time hard disks spin up to access data. When the flash-base drive cache is filled, the system spins up its hard disk to flush data to magnetic storage: the result is a disk which spins up for a few seconds every 10 or 20 minutes, rather than a disk which spins more-or-less continually during active use. Furthermore, the speed of flash memory means users should not see delays or lags when material is written to cache or flushed to disk.

21/05/2006 - Experts Warn of Critical Word Vulnerability - Security experts are warning of a critical vulnerability affecting users of Microsoft Word XP and Word 2003. To quote the SANS Internet Storm Center report:
Quote - Emails were sent to specific individuals within the organization that contained a Microsoft Word attachment. This attachment, when opened, exploited a previously-unknown vulnerability in Microsoft Word (verified against a fully-patched system). The exploit functioned as a dropper, extracting a trojan byte-for-byte from the host file when executed. After extracting and launching the trojan, the exploit then overwrote the original Word document with a clean (not infected) copy from payload in the original infected document. As a result of the exploit, Word crashes, informs the user of a problem, and offers to attempt to re-open the file. If the user agrees, the new clean file is opened without incident. They are working with Microsoft on this.
We are still analyzing the trojan dropped by the exploit. What we do know is that it communicates back to localhosts[dot]3322[dot]org via HTTP. It is proxy-aware, and pings this server using HTTP POSTs of 0 bytes (no data actually POSTed) with a periodicity of approximately one minute. It has rootkit-like functionality, hiding binary files associated with the exploit (all files on the system named winguis.dll will not be shown in Explorer, etc.), and invokes itself automatically by including the trojan binary in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows. Note that, as of this morning, no anti-virus signatures detected this file as problematic according to virustotal.com.
We have traced nearly this attack to the far east; specifically, China and Taiwan. IP's seen are registered there, domains seen are registered there, and the emails received originated from a server in that region. The attackers appear to be aware that they have been outed, and have been routinely changing the IP address associated with the URL above.
Due to the aggravating circumstances (0-day, no AV detection), we wanted to make sure the community is aware that this problem exists as soon as possible.
Users should be aware that as of now this vulnerability is only being exploited as a very concentrated and targeted attack. That said, Microsoft is working diligently with anti-virus vendors to update their products in an effort to detect and combat a more widespread use of this exploit. Microsoft also states that they have a patch for this security issue ready and it is currently in testing and scheduled to be released as part of the June security updates on June 13, 2006, or sooner if necessary.

20/05/2006 - Civil War-era fort up for sale on eBay - Fort Montgomery, a Civil War-era fort built in 1844, is up for sale on eBay. This is the first time the fort, which was manned during the war but never saw any action, has been formally up for sale according Victor Podd of Boca Raton, Fla., whose family has owned the fort for 23 years.
The limestone fort sits on a Lake Champlain island in northern New York and is connected to the mainland by a 700-foot causeway. The full package offered on the auction website includes 6,900 feet of Lake Frontage and 279 acres on the adjacent mainland.
As of Saturday morning, the top bid for the property was $1,000,300.00.
Podd's late father, Victor, purchased the fort and surrounding property in 1983 to build the headquarters of his company, Powertex. A few years ago, the state declined the Podds' offer to donate the fort and 68 acres of land for use as a state park.
Podd, who now owns the fort with his brother, Stephen, said its reserve price was below $9.9 million, but declined to specify an exact figure. The online auction ends June 5.

19/05/2006 - Symantec Sues Microsoft - It was bound to happen sooner or later but security firm Symantec is taking legal action against Microsoft accusing it of misusing its technology the BBC reports.
Symantec is angry and alleges that Microsoft improperly used Symantec's data storage techniques in its own software. Symantec wants compensation, saying the alleged infringement amounts to misappropriation of its trade secrets.
The disagreement is based on Symantec's Volume Manager software, which allows operating systems to store and handle large amounts of data.
Symantec believes Microsoft has "deliberately and surreptitiously misappropriated" the technology "and thereby convinced the US government to issue patents to Microsoft based on technologies invented by Symantec".
Symantec is mostly known for its corporate and home anti-virus software that is used widely across the world.
Microsoft describes the accusation as unfounded and says it has tried unsuccessfully to resolve the issue.

18/05/2006 - Dell to use AMD by end of the year - On Thursday, Dell released its second-quarter earnings that showed the companyÂ’s profits fell 18 percent from a year ago, and sales grew six percent, a moderate rate compared with previous quarters.
Dell also announced in its second-quarter earnings press release that the company will offer AMD Opteron processors in multiprocessor servers by the end of this year.
Speculation has mounted for years as to whether the company would adopt the chips, despite DellÂ’s exclusive relationship with Intel to this point. AMD has enjoyed a performance lead in server benchmarks over IntelÂ’s Xeon processors.
At this time, Intel is stillthe sole supplier of processors for DellÂ’s desktop and mobile computers, excluding those manufactured by its recently acquired Alienware division.

18/05/2006 - RIAA Sues XM Radio Over Portable Device - LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The recording industry on Tuesday sued XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., alleging its Inno device that can store music infringes on copyrights and transforms a passive radio experience into the equivalent of a digital download service like iTunes.
A spokesman for the Recording Industry Association of America, comprising major labels such as Vivendi Universal's Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group Corp., EMI Group Plc and Sony BMG, said the suit was filed on Tuesday in New York federal court.
The suit accuses XM Satellite of "massive wholesale infringement," and seeks $150,000 in damages for every song copied by XM customers using the devices, which went on sale earlier this month. XM, with more than 6.5 million subscribers, said it plays 160,000 different songs every month.
"...Because XM makes available vast catalogues of music in every genre, XM subscribers will have little need ever again to buy legitimate copies of plaintiffs' sound recordings," the lawsuit says referring to the hand held "Inno" device.

18/05/2006 - Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Beta - Thanks to Radish™ for the heads up on the forum.
It looks like Microsoft wants to make sure you know if your computer is ready for Windows Vista. Currently, the beta only works on Windows XP systems. Chances are, if you are running something older than Windows XP, your computer wonÂ’t run Windows Vista anyways. ItÂ’s nice to see a downloadable tool in advance. So that you do not have to buy Windows Vista and then find out your computer won't run it.
In the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) portion of the site, Microsoft also mentions the minimum system requirements for Windows Vista are the following:
• An 800 MHz processor. • 512 MB of RAM. • A 20 GB hard drive with 15 GB of free space. The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a small beta application that you can run on your current Windows XP-based computer to find out if it's ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista. When you run the Upgrade Advisor, it will scan your computer and generate an easy-to-understand report of any known system and device compatibility issues, along with recommendations on how you can get your PC ready for Windows Vista. Microsoft plans to add functionality to Upgrade Advisor, such as checking how your software applications will run with Windows Vista. Download the beta version today and check this site in a few months for a new version.

18/05/2006 - Seagate, Maxtor Merger Approved by Shareholders - After a deal was reported to be in the works months ago, shareholders for both Seagate and Maxtor have approved a merger of the hard drive giants. Under the deal, Seagate will acquire Maxtor, whose profits had seen a sharp decline over the recent market periods. The changes are expected to take two to three business days to take effect. Maxtor will no longer be listed on the New York Stock Exchange when the markets open this coming Monday, the 22nd.
"Seagate has approached this transaction much differently than traditional mergers and acquisitions. This combination will deliver greater scale by leveraging Seagate's successful business model and is not intended to be a traditional integration of product lines or operations," said Bill Watkins, Seagate's President and CEO.
The company will hold a conference call this Monday which will be distributed for replay on its website.
