16/05/2006 - If You CanÂ’t Beat Them, Sue Them - That seems to be the philosophy of many of todayÂ’s companies, but MP3 player maker Creative may have a case on their hands in the latest in the long run of Creative vs. Apple wars. Creative claim that the iconic iPod violates their patents, and as a result wants the iPod withdrawn from sale immediately.
Creative say that AppleÂ’s iPods side scrolling navigational system infringes their patent that they applied for in 2001 and received in 2005. The company have now filed a complaint at the San Francisco district court, as well as a complaint to the US International Trade commission, asking it to investigate whether Apple had breached import laws by selling iPods and the iPod Nano.
In the filing, Creative claim that they met with Apple in 2001 to discuss ways in which the two companies could work together, but Apple dismissed the opportunity. The potential court case comes as it was revealed that Apple had a 74% market share in the US, compared to Creative which has under 10%.

16/05/2006 - AMD prices up AM2 desktop chips - The socket "is green and elegant". Chip firm said it's showing off energy efficient Athlon 64X2 dual cores, Athlon 64s and Sempr0ns using the AM2 socket. The firm will tell the Spring Microprocessor Forum that desktop processors will give 37 per cent better performance per watt more than the old sockets it is phasing out. Small size Athlon 64 X2 dual core desktop chips wll give 154 per cent better performance per watt, it claimed.
AMD also claimed that dual core CPUs may only use 14watts. The chips will be available in May and AMD gave the prices it's charging. The 64 X2 DC chips will cost $671 for the 4800+; $601 for the 4600+, $514 for the 4400+, $417 for the 4200+; $353 for the 4000+; and $323 for the 3800+. The small form factor versions will cost $364 (3800+); $231 (3500+) and for Semprons $145 (3400+); $119 (3200+) and $101 (3000+).

16/05/2006 - Internet Regulator Approves .tel Domain - ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) unanimously approved the creation of the new .tel Top Level Domain (TLD) and awarded the contract to UK-based Telnic Ltd.
The .tel domain is intended to enable people to reach a business from any Internet enabled device, whether computer or mobile, simply by typing the company's name followed by .tel. The user could then connect directly to a company representative or navigate through a list of services that the company may offer.
Telnic will release free applications to allow .tel domains to be integrated with the commonly used address books found in computer systems and mobile phones.
In addition, individuals can use the .tel domain to publish and update their contact information. These individuals can decide, in real time, by what means their friends and colleagues will be able to reach them. This could include: VoIP, conventional telephony (fixed-line or wireless), e-mail, SMS, Skype, AIM and many more.

16/05/2006 - QuickTime flaws put Macs and PCs at risk - Serious flaws in Mac OS X and QuickTime software could put Macintosh and Windows systems at risk of cyber attack, Apple has warned.
In a pair of security alerts released on Thursday, Apple outlined 31 flaws that affect various versions of the operating system and a dozen vulnerabilities in its QuickTime media player software. Security experts have deemed the issues "critical" but Apple does not provide a severity rating. Fixes are available.
Apple's security update 2006-003 for Mac OS X and the QuickTime patch can be downloaded and installed via Software Update or from the Apple Downloads website.

16/05/2006 - Microsoft Releases Expression Web Designer Preview - Microsoft has released the first preview version of its much-anticipated Microsoft Expression Web Designer product.
On May 15, Microsoft announced the first CTP (Community Technology Preview) of its Expression Web Designer, formerly known by its code name of Quartz.
Microsoft offered CTP releases of the Expression Web Designer's companion products in the Expression suite—Expression Graphic Designer, code-named Acrylic, and Expression Interactive Designer, code-named Sparkle—but developers were left waiting for Quartz. The Expression suite is Microsoft's tool set aimed at designers.
The company had showed the Expression Web Designer technology at various stages of its development at both its Professional Developers Conference in October and at its Mix 06 conference in March.
Wayne Smith, Microsoft's product manager for Expression Web Designer, said the main focus of this CTP is to demonstrate compliance with popular Web standards such as XHTML, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and XML, or "all the standards people are using on the Web."

15/05/2006 - Skype Launches 'Very Free' Service to US and Canada - Voice over IP (VoIP) kingpin Skype has done the unthinkable and introduced 100% free phone calls to all US and Canadian landline and mobile numbers.
The internet telephony service, recently purchased by eBay, say the offer will last "at least until the end of 2006" - and reveal that there's not a sign up cost or hidden charge in site. The only snag to be found is that the SkypeOut caller must also be in the US or Canada.
Skype's Jaanus Kase blogged: "It is really very, very free. ThereÂ’s no prepayment, no minimum use, no subscription, no monthly fee, no nothing."
He revealed the company is unsure as to how long the offer will last: "Maybe we extend the free period, maybe not. YouÂ’ll hear more about this towards the end of the year."
Unfortunately there are no plans in place to expand this offer to the rest of the world, but who knows what the world's most popular internet telephony company will do next?
For those of you eager to get Skyping, Jaanus advised: "If you havenÂ’t bought any Skype Credit, your Skype client may still tell you something about needing to buy some before you can use SkypeOut. Just disregard that and place your call. It will work fine."

15/05/2006 - RIAA: Trading CDs is Illegal - Lala.com — a new website that helps song lovers trade entire compact discs for less than the cost of a single iTunes video download — is either the music industry's salvation or yet another nail in its coffin.
But because the company never actually takes possession of the traded albums, it can't guarantee that pirated discs won't be exchanged. And although the website asks members to remove songs from their computers after mailing the CD to someone else, there's nothing to prevent a Lala.com user from receiving a CD, copying it, and then trading the original again.
At a conference last August, the chief executive of the Recording Industry Assn. of America, Mitch Bainwol, told a room full of music retailers that "listeners who make copies of CDs and give them to friends are becoming a greater threat than peer-to-peer networks." Bainwol added that one reason for the industry's downturn is that 12% of U.S. households regularly copy CDs for acquaintances who might otherwise buy a new version of the album.
