11/05/2006 - Sony and Panasonic Announce New HD Format - No, its not Blu-Ray. Sony and Panasonic announced today that they have co-developed a new high definition DVD format created specifically for camcorders. The new format, dubbed AVCHD, captures video onto 8cm DVDs using the MPEG4 AVC/H.264 compression system. This system allows video to be recorded at 18 megabits per second. Current HD video formats are 19 megabits (HD-1) and 25 megabits (HD-2). Current non-HD camcorders record at 8.5 megabits per second. Both companies have been working on this together for over a year.

The AVCHD format compresses HD video into smaller data streams so that it can fit onto existing 8cm DVD discs. This new technology will allow users to shoot HD video using the above codec at twice the efficiency of the current MPEG 2 and MPEG4 codecs. AVCHD will be able to shoot 1080i or 720p with 4:2:0 sampling and will work in either 4:3 or 16:9 formats.

Audiophiles need not worry. AVCHD will also be able to use either AC-3 or Linear PCM for high-quality sound. Using the AC-3 codec, users will be able to record 1 to 5.1 audio channels or 1 to 7.1 audio channels using Linear PCM.

The interesting part is that both Sony and Panasonic are backing Blu-Ray. Yet, the AVCHD format does not incorporate Blu-Ray technology. One would think that Sony would use this as an advantage to get its Blu-Ray technology into more consumer homes, much like they are doing with their Playstation 3. However, there is talk of the two formats (Blu-Ray and AVCHD) coexisting together. Sony also stated that since the two technologies use the same compression methods, “you should be able to play back an AVCHD disk on a Blu-Ray disc player.”

11/05/2006 - Abit to Introduce Motherboard with HDMI - Abit is set to unveil a MicroATX form factor motherboard which features onboard HDMI output - a first for the industry. The board, dubbed the IL-80MV, features the Intel 945GT chipset designed for Intel's current Yonah and upcoming Memom core Core Solo and Core Duo processors. It includes a single x1 PCI Express lane and two PCI slots which could possibly be used for an HDTV capture card or WiFi adapter, which combined with HDMI output make it an ideal platform for a low-noise, low-power home theater PC.

The preliminary pictures of DailyTech's website show the board will include the standard assortment of features including high definition audio, firewire, and USB 2.0. Additionally, Abit promises the final board will include a variant of its OTES cooling system. While board does not include an x16 PCI-E slot for a graphics card, the target market is certainly not the high-end gamer.

Pricing for the IL-80MV is not set, but it should debut at a lower price point than other Core ready desktop boards given the stripped-down nature of its feature set.

11/05/2006 - Vista Might be too Complex for Microsoft - This is a great article. I encourage everyone to read the full story.

It will not have escaped your attention that Microsoft is laboring to finish the next version of its Windows operating system, Vista. A version aimed at the corporate market is supposed to be ready for Christmas, with the consumer edition following some time later (missing the Christmas market, which has irritated computer manufacturers and retailers more than somewhat). Last week, Gartner, a leading IT consultancy, predicted that Microsoft would miss those shipping dates.
'Microsoft's track record is clear: it consistently misses target dates for major operating system releases,' the firm wrote. 'We don't expect broad availability of Windows Vista until at least the second quarter of 2007, which is nine to 12 months after Beta 2.' Microsoft challenged this. A company spokesman told CNET News: 'We remain on track to deliver the final product to volume-license customers in November 2006 and to other businesses and consumers in January 2007.'

So there! The significant thing about Vista, however, is not the shipping date but the fact that it has been an unconscionable time in the making, subject to endless slippages (which have triggered major organizational changes within the company) and - when it eventually ships - will be just a shadow of the system envisaged when it was conceived. And while all this has been going on, Apple has released several major upgrades of its OS X operating system, and the programmers behind Open Source Linux have significant upgrades over the same period.

The difference between Microsoft and Apple can be largely explained by two factors. One is structural: Apple's OS X is based on Unix, which has a different architecture from Windows, and may be inherently easier to upgrade. The other is that Microsoft is a victim of its past monopolistic success: any new version of Windows has to be 'backwards compatible' with the thousands of programs and hardware devices built to work on earlier versions of the operating system. Apple has much less of a 'legacy' problem in this sense.

The really interesting comparison is with Linux, a product of comparable complexity developed by an independent, dispersed community of programmers who communicate mainly over the net. How come they can outperform a stupendously rich company that can afford to employ very smart people and give them all the resources they need?

Here's a possible answer: complexity. Modern operating systems are staggeringly complicated. In terms of the number of their components, and the richness of the interactions between them, they are far more complex than an Airbus or a jumbo jet.

11/05/2006 - Mobo Makers Confirm May Launch for Turion64 X2 and AM2 - The availability of AMD’s next-generation CPUs – the Turion 64 X2 mobile and Socket-AM2 processors – will still follow the chip vendor’s May schedule, according to unnamed motherboard makers that have recently received this confirmation from AMD, in response to speculation, on the part of some PC makers, that the schedule had been put back to June, on insufficient utilization and capacity concerns.

AMD will launch the Turion 64 X2 mobile platform on May 17 and AM2-compatible processors on May 23, as opposed to rumors of a June 6 launch for the desktop segment and an unspecified June date for the mobile CPU, according to sources at the motherboard makers.

However, sources at Taiwan DRAM makers indicated that mass production of DDR2 memory for AMD-based systems will begin some time in July or August, one to two months later than originally estimated.

11/05/2006 - ICANN Chokes off .xxx Porn Registry - Plans for an area of the internet dedicated to pornography were killed last night in a vote by overseeing organization ICANN.

In a split 9-5 board decision, the organization acted ruthlessly, against its own previous position, in order to put an end to an increasingly difficult and controversial issue - the approval of a .xxx top-level domain.

The .xxx registry application has been the focus of enormous political pressure on ICANN for the past six months and was used at one point as a political football in a wider tussle for power within the internet. Despite everything that has been written and will continue to be written about the application however, two simple facts need to be recognized:

* 1. The US government, despite its constant denials, has been the driving force in preventing the .xxx registry from being approved thanks to a campaign of right-wing Christians with close links to the current administration.
* 2. The company behind .xxx, ICM Registry, has done all that has been asked of it in order to answer people's concerns, but has had its efforts ignored or misrepresented by those opposed to the registry.

The history of the .xxx domain has been long and incredibly complex, with its approval constantly delayed or stymied for increasingly untenable reasons. It has also exposed ICANN's flawed decision-making processes and revealed the hidden hand behind what is supposed to be an autonomous organization overseeing the internet. ICANN has had to decide against its own recommendations, and has been caught in a web of conflicting statements.

11/05/2006 - Microsoft's Phishing Filter for IE7 Clears Audit - A third-party audit of the new phishing filter built into the Internet Explorer 7 browser and the MSN Toolbar has given the technology a thumbs up on the sensitive issue of user privacy.

Jefferson Wells International, an IT auditing group, has validated Microsoft's assurances that the phishing filter does not transmit any personally identifiable information without explicit user consent and that any URL information sent from the user's browser cannot be traced back to the surfer's personal information.

The privacy thumbs up is a boost to Microsoft's mission to market IE 7 as a major security overhaul with features to thwart identity theft and drive-by spyware and Trojan installations. "We gave in-depth access to the technology and to the engineering team. After they studied the technology and interviewed the engineering team, they agreed that the claims we made about protecting your privacy are true and accurate," said Rob Franco, lead program manager for IE security at Microsoft.

The auditors confirmed that the phishing filter client only transmits URLs when the user wants to manually provide feedback on a URL, when the URL is not found in the Phishing Filter local data files, or when the phishing filter client heuristics determine a site as suspicious.

11/05/2006 - Users Report Glitches With Microsoft's Flash Patch - Microsoft plans to begin patching more than its own software, its first effort got off to a rocky start. By Wednesday, Windows users were complaining of glitches in updating Adobe's Flash Player through the Windows Update service.

Microsoft took the unusual step Tuesday of feeding an updated edition of Flash Player to Windows XP, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium users. It was the first time the Redmond, Wash. developer took an active role in pushing a third-party product update to users.

Even a member of Microsoft's Security Response Center's team noted the shift. "I've been in the MSRC now for a while, seen a lot of 'interesting' things happen around here and it is a bit of a trip to look at our list of bulletins we shipped today and see the words Flash, Adobe, and Macromedia in the titles," said Craig Gehre, the release manager for MSRC. "Different to say the least."

That was the reaction of users on a Microsoft support newsgroup, but not in a good way.

11/05/2006 - MPAA training police dogs to sniff out DVDs - Thanks davemania for linking this story in our Back Page News section of the forums.

The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), express delivery company FedEx and HM Revenue & Customs, has joined forces to launch an exciting new initiative to help combat DVD piracy.

As part of a project promoted by the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA), FACT instigated the training of two black Labradors named Lucky and Flo by one of the world's leading experts in the field whose other clients include police, fire and rescue service. The dogs were trained over an eight month period to identify DVDs that may be located in boxes, envelopes or other packaging, as well as discs concealed amongst other goods which could be sold illegally in the UK. These DVDs are often smuggled by criminal networks involved in large scale piracy operations from around the world."
