10/05/2006 - Microsoft Connect gets a Facelift - Thanks to Skoogie for the heads up over in the BPN.
Microsoft has managed to slide in a new beta of their Microsoft Connect website without much notice. Many users of Microsoft Connect, such as myself, know that this is a much needed overhaul. The current site is old, outdated and boring looking. On top of that, it is tough to navigate until you get used to it. Hopefully a revamp of the site will change that.
As of the time of this article, your current beta participations are not available on the beta Microsoft Connect site. There is no indication that this will change anytime soon. The site does appear to be mostly functional. Check it out and let us know what you think.

10/05/2006 - Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 2 Shapes Up for May 23 Release - Microsoft had planned to ship a variant of Windows Vista build 5381 as Beta 2, the version that the company will be delivering to millions of consumers later this month. However, problems with build 5381 have changed those plans somewhat, along with the schedule for getting Beta 2 into the hands of users. Last weekend, Microsoft surprisingly issued a variant of build 5381 to testers after previously noting that it wouldn't ship any more interim builds before Beta 2.
Now, Microsoft plans to release a DVD of Vista Beta 2 and Office 2007 Beta 2 to attendees of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. (WinHEC) on May 23. Meanwhile, users who wish to obtain a DVD version of Beta 2 via the company's public Web site will have to wait until May 27.

10/05/2006 - Neowin at CTS 2006 - The Computer Trade Show will conclude tomorrow at the NEC in Birmingham, UK so check back over the weekend for reports of Microsoft's exclusive Vista presentation, new products from some of the IT trade's largest companies and plenty of pictures of the show.
This year's event incorporates both the Office Technology Expo and the Comms Channel Expo, as well as providing educational facilities and over 250 visiting exhibitors to entertain the thousands of visitors expected.
Companies attending include rivals Intel and AMD, as well as AVG Antivirus, Toshiba and Belkin. There will of course be a multitude of smaller companies offering product demonstrations and showing off new hardware.
Don't forget to check back for Neowin's coverage of the UK's annual exhibition dedicated to the IT trade.

10/05/2006 - Judge recommends extradition for UK hacker - Gary McKinnon, the UK's most notorious hacker, has come one step closer to a US trial after a judge suggested extradition today.
The fourty-something computer enthusiast spent two years browsing the US Military's most top secret data, searching for what he claims to be "supressed technology" - technology that is beneficial to the rest of the world that the US government refuse to release.
Mr McKinnon's solicitor, Karen Todner, said: "We're obviously very disappointed with the judgement that was given this morning. We're proposing to appeal this to the Secretary of State, and if we're still refused we will then appeal to the High Court for a decision to allow Gary to be tried here as a British citizen."
The debate over whether to extradite Mr McKinnon is a heated one. Despite committing the crimes in his native country, the cyber-criminal broke US laws and as such is likely to face possible jail and nearly $2m in fines in the US, if the UK hands him over.
The hacker maintains that his illegal activities were out of pure curiosity and not malice. The US government sees it differently however and claims he caused $700,000 worth of damage on his spree.
The final decision over whether the hacker will have to face a US court belongs with the UK's home secretary, John Reid.

10/05/2006 - Google Health possibly coming this week, try it using trick - Google has been quietly testing a new service called Google Health. Rumours about this service started at the end of March, when Google informed about Adam Bosworth´s hiring, with the title "Architect, Google Health."
As ArsTechnica.com added, this service is occasionally available at http://64.233.167.99, and appears to operate along the lines of Google Music. So when you do a search for a topic like "anxiety," you get the ever-present sponsored links, a list of web sites related to the condition, and some "refine results" links such as "treatment," "research papers," "From medical establishment," "symptoms," "news," and "alternative medicine." Each of those "refine results" links takes you to a more focused list of links.
If you would like to try this service, you do not need to wait until you are lucky one and Google´s server send you result with Google Health links. Slovak IT site Zive.sk  found out that all you have to do is type IP address mentioned above, search for a medical term (e.g. mental illness), then add "&ie=ISO-8859-1&hl=en&cx=" (without quotes) at the end of the URL and load page again. The first two variables are intended for international users to make sure that English interface and ISO-8859-1 encoding is used, the third one „tells” Google to show those links.
Reports are that Google plans to announce the new service at some point next week, possibly at the annual Google Press Day on Wednesday.

10/05/2006 - Startup using water to fuel cars - A small startup has patented a way of extracting the hydrogen in water to supliment or replace gasoline in automobiles. The inventor was working on a way to replace the dangerous fuels in cutting torches and developed an electrolysis method of extracting the hydrogen in water. The video Pretty Cool! shows the process in action. The flame is not hot to the touch, but will cut right through metal, and burn a hole in solid metal quickly.
Now, he has patented his method, he has shown the government the idea and has also powered his automobile which uses very few OUNCES of water for an entire trip to Washington D.C. The goverment & military are looking into this, and the military is trying to use his process to develop a HumVee to run on water.

"I have some information about release dates on WMP 11 for XP that no one else has. This info was obtained from a Microsoft employee who I can't name but was able to give me this info. If you know other MS employees, they may be able to confirm this info by digging a little bit through Microsoft's internal knowledge base (employees only)
Microsoft is planning a Public Preview Beta of Windows Media Player 11 for XP on Wednesday, May 17th.
The final RTM release is scheduled for late June 06."

10/05/2006 - Windows Live Messenger Beta Rolled Out - A beta version of Windows Live Messenger, considered the next generation of the company's popular MSN Messenger instant messaging service, is now broadly available for download, Microsoft said Tuesday. Until now, the beta was available to a few million invited testers, Microsoft said in a statement. At the top of the feature list for the newly-released beta is expanded PC-to-phone calling service, the company said. Users already can make calls to and between the U.S., the U.K., Spain, France and Germany. Microsoft said that, starting next week, users will also be able to call the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Finland and Italy via the Verizon Web Calling service.
