09/05/2006 - Alienware chooses Airgo chipsets for new laptops - Alienware's 19-inch Aurora mALX and 17-inch Aurora m9700 notebooks are equipped with the Airgo's Gen3 True MIMO (multiple input, multiple output), the companies are expected to announce during the E3 Expo, a massive conference in Los Angeles dedicated to video games. Airgo's chips are designed to connect a computer with Wi-Fi systems at speeds fast enough to make high-performance gaming possible, Airgo executives said. Dell announced in March that it would acquire Alienware.
"Because high-performance users are increasingly embracing mobile platforms, Airgo's True MIMO technology underscores Alienware's ongoing commitment to delivering the highest performance systems," Mark Vena, Alienware's vice president of marketing, said in a statement.
MIMO technology has been adopted as the core of the new IEEE 802.11n MIMO interoperability standard. MIMO is Wi-Fi certified, and can be used with any other Wi-Fi certified 802.11 device on a network, Airgo said.

09/05/2006 - 20-year-old 'botmaster' faces years behind bars - Jeanson James Ancheta, a well-known member of the "Botmaster Underground" who pleaded guilty in January to federal charges of conspiracy, fraud and damaging U.S. government computers, was given the longest sentence for spreading computer viruses, federal prosecutors said.
He was sentenced to 57 months in prison and three years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Gary Klausner, who also ordered him to pay $15,000 in restitution to the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center in China Lake, Calif., and forfeit to the government some $60,000 in illicit gains.
Ancheta was accused in the original 17-count indictment of hijacking some 500,000 computers using "bots," or programs that surreptitiously install themselves on computers so they can be controlled by a hacker. A botnet is a network of such robot, or "zombie," computers, which can harness their collective power to do considerable damage or send out huge amounts of junk e-mail.
Prosecutors say the case was unique because Ancheta was accused of profiting from his attacks by selling access to his botnets to other hackers and planting adware, software that causes advertisements to pop up, into infected computers.
In entering the guilty pleads, Ancheta admitted using computer servers he controlled to transmit malicious code over the Web to scan for and exploit vulnerable computers, which he then controlled as zombie machines.

08/05/2006 - The second coming of Intel's Core Duo - Intel has decided to borrow the sequential naming scheme it used for its famous Pentium brand and apply it to the new Core line of chips. Earlier this year, Intel released the Core Duo processor, and in a few months it will unveil Core 2 Duo processors. The Core 2 Duo name will be used for desktop chips based on the Conroe chip, as well as for notebook chips based on the Merom chip.
Each one of IntelÂ’s model numbers will be preceded by a letter that indicates how much power the chip consumes at its peak. This is the first time Intel has incorporated power consumption into its model numbers.
The end appears nigh for the Pentium brand, which has carried Intel for 13 years. Intel is expected to rapidly shift its factories to cranking out Core processors by the end of the year.
Intel announced last week plans to release Conroe and Merom chips in July and August, respectively, which is earlier than expected.

Windows users who are eager to test Windows Vista don't have much longer to wait: Microsoft will ship Beta 2 to millions of consumers sometime in late May. Currently, the company still plans to ship Beta 2 on May 22. Attendees of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2006, which runs May 23rd through the 25th, will receive Vista Beta 2 on DVD.

06/05/2006 - MPAA: Online piracy cost Hollywood $2.3 billion - A study ordered by the Motion Picture Association of America has claimed that Hollywood missed out on $6.1 billion last year in lost revenues due to piracy, with the internet denying copyright holders $2.3 billion of that figure.
The study was the first of its kind to measure the impact of the internet on the movie industry's profits. The counterfeiting of goods, or bootlegging, alledgedly accounted for $2.4 billion in lost revenues whilst illegal copying (which included individuals creating copies for their own personal use) totalled $1.4 billion in lost revenues.
Figures for the US showed that copying DVDs was the most common form of movie-theft, as opposed to other countries in which online piracy and the sale of fake goods reigned supreme.
Todd Chanko, an analyst at Jupiter Research (who conducted the study on behalf of the MPAA) remarked: "As bad as peer-to-peer copying on the internet is, it's nothing compared to overseas factories producing pirate DVDs."
He told BBC News: "The MPAA has been throwing these kinds of figures around for years, it's interesting information, but impossible to verify for the average person."
Unsurprisingly the MPAA recorded highest losses in China, where bootlegging rages rampantly. The otherwise global increase could perhaps be blamed on the coming-of-age of peer-to-peer applications such as BitTorrent. The MPAA has targetted BitTorrent before, closing down many of the tracker sites that make the network such an attractive prospect for filesharers.

05/05/2006 - Crank Calls with Motorola - Fairly soon you may be able to crank call (isnÂ’t it really called a prank call?) using your Motorola phone, literally. Andre Minoli has created a very unique hand-cranked cell phone to be manufactured by Motorola.
The new phone, dubbed Motorola PVOT, is aimed more at developing countries. However it could have a nice market in the US as well. How many times have you been somewhere and needed to make a phone call, only to discover your battery was dead.
Motorola’s PVOT will give you approximately 1 minute of talk time for every 25 “cranks” of the handset. Your cranks charge up a single AA battery which is then used as power for the phone. It also features a 125x125 dot matrix LCD screen and odd looking keypad.
One can only wonder if you will be allowed to crank during calls or the maximum cranks per battery. As cell phone companies offer more and more minutes for less money, your worries may shift away from using up all your minutes. The phone call of the future might go something like this, “Mom, I have to call you back. I didn’t crank up enough minutes. Yes, I know I should have cranked more than 25 times, but I was in a hurry.”
What about dialing 911? If you have an emergency will you have to crank before dialing 911? That could pose a major issue.
