06/05/2006 - MPAA: Online piracy cost Hollywood $2.3 billion - A study ordered by the Motion Picture Association of America has claimed that Hollywood missed out on $6.1 billion last year in lost revenues due to piracy, with the internet denying copyright holders $2.3 billion of that figure.
The study was the first of its kind to measure the impact of the internet on the movie industry's profits. The counterfeiting of goods, or bootlegging, alledgedly accounted for $2.4 billion in lost revenues whilst illegal copying (which included individuals creating copies for their own personal use) totalled $1.4 billion in lost revenues.
Figures for the US showed that copying DVDs was the most common form of movie-theft, as opposed to other countries in which online piracy and the sale of fake goods reigned supreme.
Todd Chanko, an analyst at Jupiter Research (who conducted the study on behalf of the MPAA) remarked: "As bad as peer-to-peer copying on the internet is, it's nothing compared to overseas factories producing pirate DVDs."
He told BBC News: "The MPAA has been throwing these kinds of figures around for years, it's interesting information, but impossible to verify for the average person."
Unsurprisingly the MPAA recorded highest losses in China, where bootlegging rages rampantly. The otherwise global increase could perhaps be blamed on the coming-of-age of peer-to-peer applications such as BitTorrent. The MPAA has targetted BitTorrent before, closing down many of the tracker sites that make the network such an attractive prospect for filesharers.

The new phone, dubbed Motorola PVOT, is aimed more at developing countries. However it could have a nice market in the US as well. How many times have you been somewhere and needed to make a phone call, only to discover your battery was dead.
Motorola’s PVOT will give you approximately 1 minute of talk time for every 25 “cranks” of the handset. Your cranks charge up a single AA battery which is then used as power for the phone. It also features a 125x125 dot matrix LCD screen and odd looking keypad.
One can only wonder if you will be allowed to crank during calls or the maximum cranks per battery. As cell phone companies offer more and more minutes for less money, your worries may shift away from using up all your minutes. The phone call of the future might go something like this, “Mom, I have to call you back. I didn’t crank up enough minutes. Yes, I know I should have cranked more than 25 times, but I was in a hurry.”
What about dialing 911? If you have an emergency will you have to crank before dialing 911? That could pose a major issue.

05/05/2006 - Intel hunkers down 'in survival mode' - Intel Corp. may still be one of the world's most profitable companies, but investors have shown little patience with the biggest maker of computer chips as it loses market share. The stock is down more than 20 per cent this year, less than half the analyst community rates Intel worthy of an investment right now, and one analyst describes the $39-billion (U.S.) company as "in survival mode."
Last year proved a banner year for Intel, with sales hitting a record $38.8-billion and profit $8.7-billion. But this year the company is forecasting a 3-per-cent decline in sales. Worse, its juicy gross profit margin is slipping. In the first quarter, the figure decreased to 55.1 per cent from 61.8 per cent in the previous quarter, and Intel management warns of a further decrease through 2006.
Just down the street from the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, the story at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is very different. The shares have rocketed more than 125 per cent in the past 12 months, including 10 per cent this year.
The combative AMD has been an irritant to Intel for years. But at one-sixth the size, it has rarely been a threat. That changed in the first quarter, when AMD secured substantial market gains, pushing Intel's hold down to less than 80 per cent for the first time in years. AMD's market share for PCs increased to 22.4 per cent in the first quarter, up from 16.4 per cent in the fourth quarter, according to Mercury Research.

05/05/2006 - Microsoft Snags A 'Google Analytics' Of Its Own - Microsoft says it has made a significant investment into DeepMetrix, a 15-year-old Web traffic analysis firm. The acquisition is likely in response to a similar one arch rival Google made a few months back. Microsoft's Internet division, MSN, plans to ultimately incorporate the DeepMetrix Web analytics tricks into future releases of Microsoft adCenter, Internet search, Office Live and MSN Spaces, a Microsoft rep said.
DeepMetrix makes a number of different software applications, including graphical bulletin boards. But what most attracted Microsoft is its feature to provide real-time information about the traffic visiting a Web site, details Web operators greatly benefit from knowing. "Microsoft chose DeepMetrix because of its great technology that delivers superior web analytics software," a Microsoft spokeswoman wrote in an email. "It is the best target for this space."

World Intellectual Property Organization's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights, seemingly concieved by the RIAA and MPAA and backed by traditional old-line media businesses. The Broadcasting Treaty, currently undergoing review at a UN convention in Geneva, Switzerland, contains passages that would severely restrict the concepts of fair use and freedom of speech—on a global level. The proposed broadcasting treaty would create entirely new global rights for broadcasting companies who have neither created nor own the programming. What's even more alarming is the proposal from the United States that the treaty regulate the Internet transmission of audio and video entertainment.
It is dangerous and inappropriate for an unelected international treaty body to undertake the task of creating entirely new rights, which currently exist in no national law, such as webcasting rights and anti-circumvention laws related to broadcasting. A global treaty is not the place for experimentation with new rights, but rather for the harmonization of existing legal norms. WIPO treads on shaky ground by proposing to create new rights that no elected body in the world has yet agreed to.

The purpose of DDEX (pronounced "dee-dex") is to establish standards for the meta-data in digital music files, mainly for sales and rights-tracking purposes.
Founding members of the consortium include artists' rights group ASCAP, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group and EMI Music, as well as several other music rights societies and agencies from the U.S., U.K. and Europe. Apple Computer, Microsoft and RealNetworks, which all provide digital music services, are also charter members.

05/05/2006 - Google Accused of Profiting From Child Porn - A Long Island politician sued Google Inc. on Thursday claiming the search engine leader is profiting from illegal child pornography. Jeffrey Toback, a member of the Nassau County Legislature, said Google has paid links to Web sites containing pornography involving minors.
"This case is about a multi-billion dollar company that promotes and profits from child pornography," said the complaint filed in state Supreme Court in Mineola. A Google spokesman denied the allegations and said the Mountain View, Calif.-based company takes numerous steps to prevent access to child pornography.
"When we find or are made aware of any child pornography, we remove it from our products, including our search engine," spokesman Steve Langdon said in an e-mail statement to The Associated Press. "We also report it to the appropriate law enforcement officials and fully cooperate with the law enforcement community to combat child pornography."
