04/05/2006 - Michael Dell Calls on IT to Further Economic, Societal Gains - At a keynote address to the delegates of the World Congress on Information Technology, Dell Inc. founder and chairman Michael Dell urged participants from more than 80 nations to further their technological endeavors in the interests of expanding their economies and societies as a whole.
"While information technology has sparked extraordinary economic and human progress in recent years, it's also true that its potential is only beginning to be met and in many countries its promise has gone unfulfilled," said Mr. Dell. "As governments open their markets to IT products from other countries, it will give consumers more choices and force domestic producers to remain competitive on price and quality. As technology becomes more powerful and less expensive, it will contribute to a great leveling effect," he said. "The net effect is to empower people, particularly outside of major developed nations, and to narrow the gulf in computing experiences that would traditionally exist between Austin, Auckland, Amsterdam or Ankara."
Some 2,000 participants from corporate, academic and government agencies are currently attending the WCIT in Austin, Texas. They are covering topics ranging from policy recommendations for global digital access to health care and IT privacy and security concerns.

Australians Brant Webb and Todd Russell, now on their ninth day in a collapsed mine shaft, were handed the music player through a small tunnel. They have also been given food, water, clothes, a digital camera and magazines.
A grinding machine, which is much safer than blasting or drilling, was used to dig 16 metres through solid rock to reach the men. But the 20cm wide pilot hole must be enlarged to one metre before they can crawl out. An iPod Rescuers said the tunnel would probably not be widened enough before the weekend.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, appearing at the American Society of Newspaper Editors conference in Seattle, showed off a new feature of Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Vista operating system that promises improved "on-screen reading."
He shared the podium Friday with Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of The New York Times, which is partnering with Microsoft to develop a prototype application dubbed Times Reader. Microsoft plans to release development tools by the end of this summer for other newspapers and "whoever wanted to do these things," Gates said.

Speaking to a crowd of MSN's largest advertisers, Gates said that Microsoft would prefer not to be coming from behind. "For Microsoft, we always want to be in the lead, making the breakthroughs," Gates said. But, in an on stage interview with ad executives and talk show host Donny Deutsch, Gates conceded that the company has made mistakes, including in some cases picking the wrong people to lead certain efforts.
He also gave credit to his rival, saying Google has "done a great job on search and what they've done with advertising." But, he reiterated his position that search today is still too much of a treasure hunt and promised that better things are in store. "We will keep them honest, in the sense of being able to do better in a number of areas," Gates said.

04/05/2006 - First Blu-ray Titles Delayed Until Late June - Even though HD-DVD are titles already trickling on to store shelves, titles on the rival Blu-ray format won't be available until the end of June. The reason for the holdup? Samsung, manufacturer of the first commercially available Blu-ray player, says that its Blu-ray units won't be on store shelves until June 25th. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Benjamin Feingold said that their first Blu-ray titles will be ready on May 23rd as planned, but at the urging of their retailers and hardware partners they have agreed to hold back on their release for a month in order to coincide with the availability of the players.
The first Blu-ray titles slated for release on June 20th are "Underworld Evolution" (arriving the same day as the DVD), "50 First Dates," "The Fifth Element," "Hitch," "House of Flying Daggers," "A Knight's Tale," "The Last Waltz," "Resident Evil Apocalypse" and "XXX."

Although the 802.11n working group informally compromised on a draft standard in January, the 40-day letter ballot period closed May 2 without a formal 75 percent approval of the Draft Standard 1.0. Forty-six percent of the voters approved the draft, according to members.
The backward-compatible 802.11n standard was designed to gradually replace today's Wi-Fi, with theoretical throughputs of about 300 Mbits/s, far faster than the 54 Mbits/s that the current 802.11g standard offers today

Why would Microsoft even want this patent? Obviously everyone is already doing it, could they be planning to enforce it and actually put a stop to malicious tracking cookies for good, is that their intention, or, are they just getting a patent on it, with no plans to enforce it, before someone else does and makes a long drawn out legal, and stupid, mess trying to enforce it."
Lets hope its for implementing a standard. Microsoft was not immediately available for comment.

That is if you have a copy of a prototype program from Microsoft Research currently named The Wild Thing. The application, for cell phones and handhelds, essentially lets consumers conduct queries with abbreviations and truncated spellings of words, said its developer Bo Thiesson.
The query TR SF turns up Thai restaurants in San Francisco, complete with search results grouped under a header for local Thai restaurants. It also turns up Tower Records and The Stinking Rose, a local restaurant, but punching in those four letters took less time on a handheld keyboard that the full formal query on a cell phone keypad.

Such components include central processing units -- the brain of the computer that powers its basic functions -- as well as monitors, keyboards and mice that customers can combine to create customized packages they can load in a shopping cart and take home right away.
