03/05/2006 - Toshiba HD-DVD Player Torn Apart - By now we all know that Toshiba has released its HD-DVD drive to the wild. Some people didnÂ’t care, while others had to be the first to own one. For Lorin Thwaits, being among the first to own one wasnÂ’t enough. He ran out and bought one and then took it home. Before even plugging it in, he disassembled the entire HD-DVD player.
In his tear down article he explains that the HD-DVD player actually includes a Pentium 4 2.5GHz processor and 1GB of PC2700 memory. No wonder they cost $500 each. The HD-DVD player also included a standard IDE HD-DVD player. One can only wonder if you could actually plug this into your PC while running Vista.
The Toshiba player runs on Red Hat using a 256MB USB flash memory module that was originally formatted with FAT32, and then repartitioned with ext2fs. There is also a tear down video available. Props to this guy for having the guts to tear apart his brand new HD-DVD player without even plugging it in!

03/05/2006 - Missing parenthesis causes 'critical' *nix flaw - An open-source security audit program funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has flagged a critical vulnerability in the X Window System which is used in Unix and Linux systems. Coverity, the San Franciso-based company managing the project under a $1.25 million grant, described the flaw as the "biggest security vulnerability" found in the X Window System code since 2000.
The X Window System, also called X11 or X, provides the toolkit and protocol to build GUIs for Unix and Unix-like operating systems.
Coverity Chief Technical Officer Ben Chelf said the flaw resulted from a missing parenthesis on a small piece of the program that checked the ID of the user. It could be exploited to allow local users to execute code with root privileges, giving them the ability to overwrite system files or initiate denial-of-service attacks.
The flaw was pinpointed during automated code scanning that formed part of the "Vulnerability Discovery and Remediation Open Source Hardening Project," a broad federal initiative to perform daily security audits of approximately 40 open-source software packages, including Linux, Apache, MySQL and Sendmail. The project will also pore over the code bases for FreeBSD, Mozilla, PostgreSQL and the GTK (GIMP Tool Kit) library.
The flaw, which affects X11R6.9.0 and X11R7.0.0, was fixed within a week of its discovery, and Chelf said Coverity has implemented a system to analyze the X Window System on a continuous basis to help prevent new defects from entering the project.

03/05/2006 - Space Cube - Have you ever wanted a full blown, Linux-running, pocket sized computer? Sure, why not! I can't tell you how often I go to a friends house and forget my PC. Can you imagine walking down the street with a 2" cube-like PC in your pocket? I can see it now. "Hey man, what's that you are listening to? An MP3 Player?" "No, this is my computer."
I hope they plan on adding battery support and making a nice 2" LCD to go along with it. Anyone who buys one of these will do so purely for "geek status." All I need to know now is where to get one and how much pocket change it is going to cost me.

Shimafuji's SEMC5701 measures just 2.05 x 2.05 x 1.77 inches (52 x 52 x 48mm). It is based on an NEC Vr5701, clocked at 266MHz or 333MHz. It includes 16MB of Flash, along with 64MB of RAM. I/O interfaces include 10/100 Ethernet, USB, CompactFlash, AC97 audio, and a D-sub 9 RS-232 serial port. The board also offers a D-sub 15 video port, and supports VGA (640 x 480), XGA (800 x 600), and SXGA (1024 x 768) resolutions. It includes an RV5C348B real-time clock, and appears to have a DIP switch for toggling "Endian-ness." The board accepts 5V DC input, and operates at 0 to 35 degrees Celsius.

The new monitor boasts a 2000:1 (Dynamic Contrast) contrast ratio and 2ms response time. I could not find any documentation stating whether the response time is gray to gray or if it is black to white. Either way, those are very impressive numbers.
Now all of us gamers can finally run out and replace all of our old CRT monitors. =)

03/05/2006 - Motorola to Buy BenQ R&D Center - Motorola announced Tuesday that they will acquire BenQ Mobile's research and development center in Denmark. Motorola plans to integrate the facility mobile device business and turn it into a product development center.
No financial terms of the deal were disclosed. However, 250 BenQ employees at the facility will now work for Motorola. The acquisition should be final in June of 2006.
” BenQ Mobile said the sale is part of its restructuring strategy, which consists the consolidation of major development sites. BenQ Mobile, with headquarters in Munich, is one of three business divisions of BenQ Corp. of Taiwan.
Shares of Motorola climbed 38 cents to $21.54 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock has traded in a 52-week range from $15.24 to $24.99.”

The class action suit was filed in August 2004 by the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles and the counties of Santa Clara, San Mateo, Los Angeles and Contra Costa. 03/05/2006 - Microsoft Looking to Buy Into Yahoo? - Microsoft's share price has taken a beating lately, in part because of the company's increased spending on R&D. Microsoft may be preparing to write a much larger check, as the Wall Street Journal is reporting (subscription required) that the company and super-size Internet portal Yahoo! have been in talks over Microsoft's possibly purchasing an equity stake in the portal.
Here's the rationale. Despite Microsoft's efforts over the past couple of years and a promising Windows Live beta, the company is still arguably far behind Google in search, advertising, and web services. In the meantime, Google is making moves that could be interpreted as positioning it to encroach on Microsoft's turf, such as buying Writely and launching the Google Page Creator. In addition, MSN/Windows Live is a distant third in search engine usage, according to Search Engine Watch.

03/05/2006 - Suit Levels Spyware, Typosquatting Allegations at Yahoo - A class-action lawsuit filed Monday against Yahoo! Inc. and group of unnamed third-parties accuses the company of engaging in "syndication fraud" against advertisers who pay Yahoo to display their ads on search results and on the Web pages of partner Web sites. The suit claims that Yahoo displayed these advertisers' online ads via spyware and adware products and on so-called "typosquatter" Web sites that capitalize on misspellings of popular trademarks or company names.
Potentially more explosive is the plaintiff's claim that Yahoo regularly uses its relationship with adware and typosquatting sites to gin up extra revenue around earnings time, alleging that the company is conspiring to boost revenue by partnering with some of the Internet's seamier characters.
