02/05/2006 - Linux gains enhanced WiFi stack - The day when WiFi cards "just work" under Linux may be fast approaching. WiFi software stack specialist Devicescape has released its "Advanced Datapath" 802.11 driver stack to the open source community under the GPL, and the Linux kernel developer community appears to be working to adapt it for mainline inclusion.

The Devicescape WiFi stack was previously only available to device vendors, under license.

WiFi card support is currently spotty in Linux, at best. Bright spots include Intel's Pro/Wireless or "Centrino" radios, and lots of essentially obsolete, difficult-to-find cards such as those based on Prism chipsets.

Devicescape specializes in selling WiFi stacks to device vendors, and it says that Linux's poor WiFi card support is limiting Linux uptake in wireless multimedia devices. It hopes its contribution will help developers quickly adopt the latest WiFi silicon technology into their wireless product designs, without having to wait for silicon vendors to release Linux drivers.

02/05/2006 - Microsoft may delay Windows Vista, again - Thanks to markjensen for the heads up in BPN.

Microsoft's release of the upgrade to its flagship Windows operating system will likely be delayed again by at least three months, research group Gartner Inc. said on Tuesday.

The research note, released to clients on Monday, said the new Windows Vista operating system is too complex to be able to meet Microsoft's targeted November release for volume licence customers and January launch for retail consumers. A Microsoft spokeswoman said the company disagreed with the Gartner report and it was still on track to meet its launch dates.

Gartner targets a Windows Vista release in the April-June quarter of 2007, nine to 12 months after Microsoft conducts a second major test, or "beta," release for Vista during the current quarter. Gartner said Windows XP took five months to go from a second test release to the start of production, but the magnitude of technological improvement in Vista is closer to Windows 2000, which took 16 months between the second test and production.

02/05/2006 - Yahoo! debuts new technology section - Internet search giant Yahoo! has taken the plunge and introduced a sickle-sweet combination of advertising and advice under the guise of a new technology section on its famed portal.

The 19-strong sections cover many of today's hot products and technologies, including a Games section, MP3 players and TVs. The main purpose of the advice section is to simplify the new technology for non-tech heads but Yahoo! hope to appeal to experts and novices alike.

Yahoo! Tech's general manager, Patrick Houston boldly said: "We want to free people from the tyranny of geekspeak."

Ex-ABC and CNN tech girl Becky Worley will host a weekly video segment called "Hook me up" where users can pitch a video idea for the site to cover. Also present are advisors geared towards a particular stereotype, e.g. The Mom, The Working Guy - through which users can relate and make decisions.

The functional and attractive new section is more than a money-making expedition, think of it as a CNET-lite. It seems that Yahoo! have finally bridged a gap in their portal, and it will be interesting to see what the website will have to cover next in order to keep up with rivals Google and MSN.

02/05/2006 - Microsoft shelves RSA SecurID support in Vista - Microsoft has shelved plans to include native support for RSA's SecurID tokens in Windows Vista, even though the company has been trialling the technology for almost two years.

In February 2004, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates announced that Windows would be able to support easy integration with RSA Security's ubiquitous SecurID tokens, which meant that enterprises would find it far easier to deploy a two-factor authentication system for logging on to networks and applications.

However, almost two years after the SecurID beta programme kicked off, the chief executive of RSA Security Art Coviello has revealed that Windows Vista will not natively support the technology.

"Microsoft had said they would include the ability to support all kinds of One Time Password (OTP) and challenge response type authentication in Vista but they were unable to get it in with all the other issues they have had -- so it is going to take longer," Coviello told ZDNet Australia during an interview on Tuesday morning in Sydney.

According to Coviello, sales of SecurID for Windows have "gone slowly" because, although Microsoft agreed to let RSA see some of its source code, the company decided not to support the tokens natively in Windows. This meant that deploying a token-based system still required "some work".

02/05/2006 - Places dropped from Firefox 2 - Betanews reported a couple of days ago that Places have been dropped from the Firefox 2.0 release, originally it was included in the first public alpha release of Firefox 2.0, codenamed "Bon Echo," it had been pulled previously. In announcing the decision, Mozilla's director of engineering Mike Schroepfer said the company wanted to ensure a quality release. Places was a complete rewrite of the Bookmarking system within Firefox.

The lead engineer for Mozilla Firefox, Ben Goodger later responded to posts in the mozilla.feedback newsgroups where a user had said "If you take Places out of Firefox 2, shouldn't it be called Firefox 1.6?"

"I don't agree that Places was the one and only thing that sold Firefox 2 though. I took a look through the Firefox 2 Requirements page to look at some of the other stuff that's going on." It's clear that Firefox 2.0 will be a major improvement over 1.5, lets hope no more features get pulled.

Firefox 2 is expected to release sometime in Q3 of 2006.

02/05/2006 - Google Dumped by Amazon's Alexa for MSN Live - Cheers to our member BigBoy for posting this news on Google getting sidetracked in favour of a Microsoft based search engine in our Back Page News forum.

From Aaron Wall at Thread Watch comes word that MSN Live is now powering Alexa's (update: AND A9's) search results instead of Google, the previous partner: Alexa Powered by Microsoft.

Alexa results were previously Google results informed by user data from the Alexa toolbar + a number of post-search refinement buttons.

The Alexa toolbar's gotten Alexa a bad rap from privacy advocates, though in function it's effect on search results is similar to click stream data that Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask may or may not be using in their determinations of relevance.

02/05/2006 - RIAA Sues Family Without Computer or Internet - So, you donÂ’t own a computer and donÂ’t have internet access. Why should you care who or what the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is? After reading this, you may think twice about that.

In the RIAAÂ’s latest lawsuit extravaganza, they have managed to sue a family with no computer and no internet access. Carma Walls is the latest victim of the RIAA whoÂ’s subpoena states:

"Plaintiffs are informed and believe that Defendant, without the permission or consent of Plaintiffs, has used, and continues to use, an online media distribution system to download the copyrighted recordings, to distribute the copyrighted recordings to the public, and/or to make the copyrighted recordings available for distribution to others'."

What’s interesting here is that the subpoena says "has used, and continues to use." However, as stated before the Walls don’t even own a computer or have any internet access. Are you really surprised? How can they “continue to use” something they do not have (and have never had) in their possession.

Walls also stated that his family has lived at their current address less than a year. The prior occupants could have had a computer and internet access. The prior family could also be the at fault party. However, the RIAA is refusing to even consider this a possibility and insists that Carma Walls infringed eight copyrights.

01/05/2006 - PowerUser.TV Episode 39: Wii. What? Wii! Why? And more! - This week Wii discuss how nanoelectronics and water can be used to create memory storage devices (what will they think of next?), Firefox fanboi's are out to "get" IE, and House Democrats have lost the vote on Net neutrality. Also Yahoo offers free software that can turn your PC into a DVR, and phishers have a new scam using VoIP.

In gaming news another ex-Gizmondo exec is in trouble, a dad gets mad and shoots his sons computer and the Oklahoma legislature passes a bill that classifies violent games with pornography. Wii also find out that there will be no Spore until 2007 (which sounds like a good thing to game-impaired Kristin, but apparently it's sad news) but the Guitar Hero sequel is coming out in November to a surprising price tag. Wii also find out which game is kicking Joel's butt this week.

It seems like there was something else Wii discussed, but Wii've forgotten what it was...

01/05/2006 - Origami PC maker has to scribble 'wait' - With Samsung planning a U.S. launch of its Origami tablet on Monday, the folks at TabletKiosk had hoped to already be shipping significant quantities of their rival device.

Instead, the tiny Southern California company discovered a manufacturing issue in the first prototypes; the internal fan was striking the devices' outer shell, causing a myriad problems. As a result, the company had to make some tweaks, and most of the devices won't ship until June.

"It's extremely frustrating," said Gail Levy, TabletKiosk's director of marketing. Doubly so since the company has already sold out its first production run (though it won't say how many have sold or shipped) and its phone continues to ring with people interested in buying the tiny tablets.

But while the company has lost some of the pride that comes with being first to market, it has managed to win points from customers pleased that it is taking the time to get it right, as well as the forthright nature by which the company let the public know of its woes.
