02/05/2006 - RIAA Sues Family Without Computer or Internet - So, you donÂ’t own a computer and donÂ’t have internet access. Why should you care who or what the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is? After reading this, you may think twice about that.
In the RIAAÂ’s latest lawsuit extravaganza, they have managed to sue a family with no computer and no internet access. Carma Walls is the latest victim of the RIAA whoÂ’s subpoena states:
"Plaintiffs are informed and believe that Defendant, without the permission or consent of Plaintiffs, has used, and continues to use, an online media distribution system to download the copyrighted recordings, to distribute the copyrighted recordings to the public, and/or to make the copyrighted recordings available for distribution to others'."
What’s interesting here is that the subpoena says "has used, and continues to use." However, as stated before the Walls don’t even own a computer or have any internet access. Are you really surprised? How can they “continue to use” something they do not have (and have never had) in their possession.
Walls also stated that his family has lived at their current address less than a year. The prior occupants could have had a computer and internet access. The prior family could also be the at fault party. However, the RIAA is refusing to even consider this a possibility and insists that Carma Walls infringed eight copyrights.

Wii also find out which game is kicking Joel's butt this week.
It seems like there was something else Wii discussed, but Wii've forgotten what it was...

01/05/2006 - Origami PC maker has to scribble 'wait' - With Samsung planning a U.S. launch of its Origami tablet on Monday, the folks at TabletKiosk had hoped to already be shipping significant quantities of their rival device.
Instead, the tiny Southern California company discovered a manufacturing issue in the first prototypes; the internal fan was striking the devices' outer shell, causing a myriad problems. As a result, the company had to make some tweaks, and most of the devices won't ship until June.
"It's extremely frustrating," said Gail Levy, TabletKiosk's director of marketing. Doubly so since the company has already sold out its first production run (though it won't say how many have sold or shipped) and its phone continues to ring with people interested in buying the tiny tablets.
But while the company has lost some of the pride that comes with being first to market, it has managed to win points from customers pleased that it is taking the time to get it right, as well as the forthright nature by which the company let the public know of its woes.

01/05/2006 - NTL Speed Upgrades Next Month - Good news for everyone, well nearly everyone signed up to NTL Broadband. From the 1st June NTL will be upgrading 2Mb subscribers to a 4Mb connection for free and will be removing any bandwidth caps on all packages. A juicy upload rate of 400k will also be introduced for 4Mb packages, giving existing users double what was available before.
Chad Raube, director of internet services at ntl Telewest, said “We’ve got a solid track record of giving customers more for their money and these broadband upgrades are the latest example of how we’ll continue to add value.” From June 2006 NTL will offer services at 1Mb, 4Mb and 10Mb.
While NTL will be removing an official bandwidth cap it is understood by Cable Forum that there may be plans to traffic shape their network, however nothing has been officially announced.

01/05/2006 - Fox buys two (more) web startups - News Corp.'s Fox Interactive Media on Monday said it had purchased two small Internet companies aimed at letting users remix their own music and media on the Internet. Fox purchased Newroo and kSolo for an undisclosed price.
Newroo has created technology tools that enable users to scour the Internet for relevant information from Web sites and blogs that can be used on their own Web sites. kSolo's service lets users sing, record and share their own karaoke recordings by using a database of songs that include everything from "Oops, I Farted Again" by Parody to "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra.
Fox Interactive Media was formed last year by News Corp. Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch to plant a firm stake on the Internet as readers and viewers spend more time away from newspapers and television.
News Corp. paid $580 million last year to buy Intermix Media, owners of MySpace.com, one of the fastest-growing Web properties by users.
Newroo and kSolo technologies will be deployed across Fox Interactive Media-controlled sites, Fox said.

01/05/2006 - Microsoft releases Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta 1 - Ed: Why they can't just call it something simple like Virtual Server 2006 is beyond me, but if they want to spend their time with 2005 R2 SP1 Beta 1, well more power to them.
Virtual Server 2005 R2 service pack 1 will support AMD Virtualization and Intel Virtualization Technology, giving customers better interoperability, strengthened isolation to prevent corruption of one virtual machine from affecting others on the same system, as well as improved performance for non-Windows guest operating systems.
Beta 1 of Virtual Server 2005 R2 service pack 1, which was released for download and testing on April 28, includes Intel Virtualization Technology compatibility, as well as a host clustering technical white paper and the VB script, Microsoft said in a statement released April 28.
The beta is available for download at Microsoft's Web site.

01/05/2006 - Will Sun Open-Source Java? - According to sources inside Sun, an ongoing debate over whether to open-source Java is coming to a head with the JavaOne conference looming May 16. New Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz, who led the open-sourcing of Solaris, could not be reached for comment on the matter.
Nevertheless, opponents of the idea are trying "to get time with Schwartz now that he is CEO so they can get their point of view across before the JavaOne conference in May, where some speculate he may announce the open-sourcing of Java," said a source close to Sun who requested anonymity.
What Schwartz will ultimately decide on Java remains to be seen, but it's another item on his long to-do list. Schwartz, who took the reins from Scott McNealy April 24, has to keep Wall Street happy and structure Sun so it will be consistently profitable. Sun hasn't reported an annual profit since 2001 and had a loss of $217 million for the fiscal third quarter of 2006, which ended March 26.
So far, Sun has resisted many calls to open-source Java. The reason: Sun fears doing so will open the doors for competitors to grab and change Java, resulting in the kernel forking and compatibility problems.

01/05/2006 - New Microsoft Browser Raises Google's Hackles - With a $10 billion advertising market at stake, Google, the fast-rising Internet star, is raising objections to the way that it says Microsoft, the incumbent powerhouse of computing, is wielding control over Internet searching in its new Web browser.
Google, which only recently began beefing up its lobbying efforts in Washington, says it expressed concerns about competition in the Web search business in recent talks with the Justice Department and the European Commission, both of which have brought previous antitrust actions against Microsoft.
The new browser includes a search box in the upper-right corner that is typically set up to send users to Microsoft's MSN search service. Google contends that this puts Microsoft in a position to unfairly grab Web traffic and advertising dollars from its competitors. The move, Google claims, limits consumer choice and is reminiscent of the tactics that got Microsoft into antitrust trouble in the late 1990s.

01/05/2006 - WGA, OGA -When do we get UGA? - User Genuine Advantage, thatÂ’s when Microsoft actually lets you use the product you paid for without nag screens and prompts all over the place -ok, it doesn't exist, but I already feel a need for it. Its ironic to think that in an era where high bandwidth users are able to get online and surf faster than ever before, the download process to update program faults, buffer over-runs and security patches in the guise of 'Windows Updates' is becoming a rather lengthy process.
It's no secret that most internet news outlets despise WGA, there are many examples on the internet on the 'usability and implementation' of WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) and most are quick to point out how long it takes for someone to bypass it. I personally use the Auto Update feature in XP but that means some updates now get by-passed because of the WGA switch.
ActiveWin has posted up a link to a website that explains in detail how WGA can be bypassed. Microsoft keep updating the WGA methods and from what I've seen in the article there is still more than one way to disable it!
Anyway the point of this post is that Microsoft have now launched OGA (Office Genuine Advantage) it works the same way as WGA but then for Office. So excuse me while I wet myself with joy, in the meantime you can have a look here for an example of how Office updates will work in the future.

01/05/2006 - Microsoft to support 1394b standard - Microsoft Corp. will provide support for the IEEE1394b standard "within a reasonable time" after the launch of Windows Vista, according to a Microsoft Corp. representative who attended the IEEE1394 Trade Association meeting held here last week.
The Windows Vista is the software giant's flagship operating system, whose broad launch is expected in January, 2007.
Microsoft, which already supports IEEE1394a in Windows XP, will extend its support to the 800Mbit/s transfer rates in the IEEE1394b standard.
Although it won't be ready for Vista's initial release, Mark Slezak, program manager, Windows Device Experience Group at Microsoft, said support for 1394b would be available in a service pack, after the release of Windows Vista.
