Despite not being the most radical change Microsoft have made recently, the new system was made with user-friendliness in mind. It signifies that Live.com is progressing, and takes us a step closer to losing the beta tag.

29/04/2006 - British Telecom Purchases Dabs.com - BT, Britain’s biggest fixed telecom player has purchased online retailer Dabs.com. While the fee has not been disclosed sources state the deal was worth £30million. The move is part of BT’s strategy to strengthen its online sales and service capabilities, particularly for small and medium-sized business and consumer products.
Dabs.com, one of the UK’s leading online retailers processes over 75,000 orders each month, and last year reported £180million in revenue. BT said “Dabs is a dotcom success story and one of the best companies in its field. Dabs.com’s outstanding expertise will boost BT’s online power to sell innovative, value for money, communication and converged IT products and offer great service to a wide range of customers.”

28/04/2006 - AMD Replacing Faulty Opteron Chips - Advanced Micro Devices is trying to track down and replace as many as 3,000 faulty Opteron processors that could produce "inconsistent results" under an unusual circumstance.
The potential problem affects a number of single-core Opteron 152, 154, 252, 254, 852 and 854 processors manufactured in late 2005 or early 2006, AMD said Friday. The company hasn't seen the problem in production use, but has seen it in a test that combines high processor temperature, high outside temperature, and a large number of floating-point mathematical computations.
AMD is working with computer makers to track down the chips and is offering free replacements. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chipmaker has made PC processors for years, but only in 2003 entered the server market with the Opteron chip. Server chips typically offer higher performance, withstand higher heat, and have circuitry that lets several communicate in the same computer.

28/04/2006 - Microsoft takes down barrier in Vista firewall - The Window's release of Vista early next year will have an updated firewall that looks at incoming and outgoing traffic, said the company. This updated firewall checks outgoing traffic in contrast to XP service pack 2, which only checks incoming traffic.
"Because the nature of an outbound firewall is to restrict the traffic sent to specific ports, the outgoing access in the Windows Vista firewall is open by default," a representative for the software maker told ZDNet Australia. "The reason for this is Microsoft has received strong feedback from its customers, especially from large organizations and government departments, saying that they would like to manage this feature from an administrator level."
Configuring the Vista firewall to stop outgoing connections made by rogue applications and malicious software will require a varying degree of technical knowledge, depending on each user's security requirements, Microsoft said.
Firewall specialist Zone Labs said that people will require a "fairly high level of sophistication" in order to properly configure the Vista firewall. For consumers, the company said the task will be nothing less than "challenging."

28/04/2006 - Phishers try a phone hook - A San Francisco-based e-mail security company, Cloudmark, has said that it has seen 2 attacks this week. Both attacks consisted of spammed messages which warns of a problem with a bank account and instructs the recipient to dial a phone number to resolve it. The caller is connected to a voice response system that is made to sound exactly like the bank's own system, Cloudmark said.
"The phone system identifies itself to the target as the financial institution and prompts them to enter account number and PIN," Cloudmark said. "The result can be personally financially devastating," Adam O'Donnell, the senior research scientist at Cloudmark, said in the statement.
Phishing scams are prevalent and continue to proliferate. In traditional scams, miscreants try to pilfer personal information by sending spam e-mail with links to a malicious Web site, crafted to look like a site belonging to a trusted service provider. The phone scams are a new twist, made possible by cheap Internet-based telephone services, Cloudmark said.
Antispam technology can block the e-mail scams, Cloudmark said. The company urged people who do receive the messages to notify their service providers immediately. As a precaution, people should not dial phone numbers received in an e-mail message and should double-check and dial the numbers printed on ATM and credit cards instead, it advised.

28/04/2006 - Skype Enter Ringtone Market with New Deal - Popular internet phone company Skype have signed a deal with some of the music industries biggest players which will allow them to sell ringtones to the millions of Skype users. A deal with EMI, Sony and Warner Music means songs are now available to download from the personalise Skype store.
Priced at €1 a ringtone, it competes with iTunes who offer music at a single cent cheaper. Ringtones will be $1.50 in the USA. Madonna is the current featured artist, but with the three big labels signed up to the deal there is no reason why Skype wont try to cater for the largest possible market offering music from rock, hip-hop and rnb artists.
The ringtone business is thriving around the world, just last year in the UK the unforgettably annoying Crazy Frog ringtone was downloaded 11million times, costing up to £3 ($5.40) a download. So eBay, owner of Skype will be looking to recoup some of the $2.6bn paid out last September.

Along with the announcement of the new z9 Business Class mainframe, IBM also announced that it will open a new System z development lab in Shanghai, China. The lab will develop and test new software for the z9 platform, which with the help of IBM developers and engineers, has played a large role in the modernization of Chinas' corporate and government infrastructures. IBM expects large growth in China as over 8 million small and medium sized companies emerge into the growing global market.

27/04/2006 - Yahoo's Free Software Turns PC Into DVR - Yahoo has released a beta version of software that turns a PC into a digital video recorder.
The software, Yahoo Go for TV, is free to download. After the software is installed, people plug their computer into their television's video and audio input connections. The computer can then record and play back shows on the TV just like with a standalone DVR. Consumers can also play DVDs, music, photos or other downloaded content.
The cost of a few cables and TV tuner card, in comparison with the hundreds of dollars being shelled out for DVD players or DVRs, could lure consumers away from DVR competitors like TiVo. And many industry leaders see TV-computer combinations as the portal for reaching consumers. Microsoft said recently that its Windows XP Media Center software is outselling the standard edition of the software, and Hewlett-Packard announced last year that it is developing technology to let high-definition televisions directly access digital content from home computers.
